Yep, he's the announcer for Finland's games and (semi)finals at least. Only on MTV3 Max Sport (pay channel).

Just a question to your Finnish friends - is he already a celebrity in Finland?

He became very popular in Slovakia during last years' WC as well.

I wish RTVS would pay him to comment our games for them. Even though I wouldn't understand most of what he's saying, I'd still learn more from him than from Niňaj.

That was in athletics, I believe it was Barbora Spotakova's olympic gold in Beijing.

Mertaranta will be commentating all Finland's games, seven other group games, Helsinki quarterfinals and all games from semi-finals onwards.

I'm fond of all the memories, but now that he is on the pay channel, I don't really miss him that much (altough this coincides with my much lessened interest towards the WC in general). I think already years ago he started to lose "it" a bit.

Why people can enjoy his commentating without understanding a word is of course because his voice is quite the opposite of monotonic and he is so emotional and energinen even in neutral games.

...and I have always thought he is actually better as a commentator on non-Finland games, because that way he can leave the really excessive "national" stuff and the stupid phrases out and concentrate more on the game without all the doom & gloom jinxing.

lands: As far as I know Kaj will not be commentating this year. At least not on any free channels. Maybe on a pay channel but I haven't even heard of that so probably not. It's a shame really, only reason why it wouldn't hurt too bad if Antero is on a pay channel is that you would have Kunnas still commentating on swedish..

Probably the most bizarre video you'll ever watch. The announcer talks Swedish, but goes perfectly ape whenever Finland scores.

And here's the same in Finnish (Mertaranta) :

Our hockey announcers are just insane, no matter the language. It is also a good example of how Mertaranta is when he's not announcing a goal. Just rapid motor-mouth talk. The guy just doesn't know you're supposed to draw a breath every now and then.

Best part is when he can weave a feeling like imminent doom everytime opponent is on the attack and in Finland zone, and complete dissapointment when Finland doesn't get instant scoring chances after gaining the zone.

But at least he does it in a semi-manly way.

Saukkonen screams like a little girl every time someone shoots the puck in the offensive zone.

I am not criticizing him, i think that quality is lacking in a lot of NHL announcers, while they are good at commenting the play, they fail to create suspenseful atmosphere.

I love Kaj. YLE still holds the rights to the Olympics, right? So we could have him announce the games in Sochi.

I want to bang my head into a wall every time I have to listen to Saukkonen announce a game. He had some epic fails in this year's WJC, like "Tshekit tulee kolmella kakkoseen!" and claiming there were Czechs on the ice when Finland was playing Switzerland. He even misses goals.

.
Yeah, YLE has the rights for Sochi 2014 so I'm pretty sure Kaj will be the swedish commentator for the Olympics

These two classics from the 1999 World Champs are my fondest memories of Mertaranta. The first one at least is more famous because of his call and not the importance of the play. Finland won their group with that goal but still just a group stage tie and he goes bonkers. Second one is the overtime winner in the semi-final.
