I hope there will be consequences for Ryan Miller turning down the Worlds this year. And not just this year, but all other years he's turned it down. He is my favorite player and the reigning Olympic MVP but there has to be some accountability for guys that only want to represent the USA in the "sexy" events. Especially when there is so much competition at the position, there are somewhere between five (Quick, Miller, Howard, Schneider, and Anderson) and seven (adding Thomas and Bishop) goalies who have a chance to make this roster. And frankly, Miller has been outplayed by most of them since Vancouver 2010.

While I would still prefer to see him in Sochi---because I think he's the best goalie in the world when he's on his game and has a competent defense in front of him---I think he should at least lose his "shoe-in" status for his repeated rejection of invites to the Worlds. Instead of "shoe-in" he should be knocked down to "in contention for a roster spot." I still hope to see him at Sochi, but if he loses out to Howard (who played in the Worlds) or Schnieder (who's been better than Miller the past couple years), I won't lose sleep.

So true. That's something I don't think people consider when they want to leave JMFJ off this team. He's a very good NHL player, but is truly elite when he plays for his country. Must be something about that USA jersey, it's like he puts it on and goes from Clark Kent to Superman.

It's a fair point, but I'll definitely bring the three guys that deserve it from their play. At this point I'm thinking it'll be Quick, Miller, Anderson, in that order, though Anderson does look like he could jump Miller. However, with how Miller played in the last go around, you just never know what happens in that situation again. He hasn't played on great teams lately.

Edit: Watching SJ/VAN - I really hope they start Luongo again. That net mouth scramble reminds me of the tying goal in 2010.

Parise-Kesler-Kane
Ryan-Statsny/Pavelski-Kessel
Oshie-Backes-Cally
Brown- Statsny/Pavelski- Wheeler/JVR
Stefan

J Johnson- Suter
Yandle- McDonagh
then its just a cluster of EJ, Shattenkirk, Buff, Faulk, Bogo, Orpik

Don't look at these guys being 3rd 4th liners. These guys can all take big time minutes at any time. Play whatever line is hot. Roll them and keep everyone fresh.

Well as some suspected, Smith with a HUGE night. Worked his tail off tonight and was rewarded with a hatty.

Invite to camp possibly in order.

Faulk is again logging the most minutes on the team like he was in Carolina. Him and Stastny are playing over 20minutes with Sacco while the other D like EJ are playing no more than 16

Is he a favourite to win a position?

I would still leave Yandle at home. What he brings is pure offense, they have guys that bring quite a bit of that without the serious limitations Yandle has in all other parts of his game.

Also curious why he isn't at the World Championships fighting for a roster spot right now.

Possibly on NHL ice. On international size ice I'd be ecstatic if we Medal.

I still the Olympic Team will mirror this year's gold medal winning WJC team:

* Very strong goaltending (top to bottom top two in the world)
* A mobile and offensively gifted defense
* A workmanlike forward group that also can skate well but is a demon on the forecheck

Here's who I would like to see at this juncture (more a compilation of names than set positions):

Goaltenders (x3):

Jonathan Quick
Craig Anderson
Cory Schneider

Defensemen (x8):

Ryan Suter/Justin Faulk
Ryan McDonaugh/Keith Yandle
Erik Johnson/Jack Johnson
Kevin Shattenkirk/Zach Bogosian

Forwards (x14):

Zach Parise-Derek Stepan-Ryan Callahan
Patrick Kane-Paul Stastny-Bobby Ryan
Phil Kessel-Ryan Kesler-JVR
TJ Oshie-David Backes-Dustin Brown
Joe Pavelski-Alex Galchenyuk

100% homer but I could see Leddy getting there. The big ice suits him perfectly and he may play himself into contention by Olympic time.

Obviously at this moment he isn't a serious candidate but who knows. I mean, in all seriousness, who is better for that structure Leddy or a guy like Byfuglien?

Yandle's skating though might make him a better choice for the larger ice.

IMO Suter is a lock.
McDonagh is a near lock.
J. Johnson should be a near lock, given his track record playing for Team USA.

Yandle, Shattenkirk, Carlson, Fowler, Byfuglien, E Johnson, Bogosian, Faulk, Jones (yeah I know real long shot) are fighting for 5 spots. Paul Martin is a dark horse guy--would add more veteran presence to what is overall a fairly young blue line.

Here's what I'd do:

Parise-Kesler-Kane
Kessel-Stepan-Ryan
Pacioretty-Pavelski-van Riemsdyk
Callahan-Backes-Brown (physical, PK, forechecking machine)
Oshie

Suter-McDonagh
J.Johnson-Yandle
Shattenkirk-Carlson
Byfuglien

On the international surface, I wouldn't be too comfortable with Byfuglien cracking the lineup. Faulk, Bogosian, Martin, Pominville are right there, too.

I think Trouba should be in over Faulk.

as a Jets fan I will say that on the big ice Buff's proficiencies/deficiencies will be even more polarized

he could be one of your more dynamic offensive players as well as have nightmarish sequences in his own end

that being said, and even though it's not the same, Buff was never more dominant this year than when it was 4 on 4 : 2 OT winners and and end to end rush wrap around that lead to a 3rd

definite risk/reward

Why do people have the perception that big ice means that physical defense and forechecking doesn't matter. The elite defensive and forechecking abilities of the Parise-Kesler-Ryan and Brown-Backes-Callahan lines are only going to be MORE pronounced on big ice because the forwards that Canada/Russia/Sweden who aren't elite won't have a chance defensively/forechecking on big ice.

This is a Gold Medal Winning squad:

Quote:
Parise-Kesler-Ryan
Kessel-Pavelski-Kane
Brown-Backes-Callahan
Oshie-Galchenyuk-Pominville
Stepan

Yandle-Suter
Shattenkirk-McDonagh
Carlson-Scuderi
Byfuglien

Quick
Schnieder
Anderson

Tortorella or anyone but Bylsma coaching

I don't think he does, but that says more about how many good American defensemen there are than about Fowler.
