Why do you think Tavares is a closer comparable to Hall and Duchene rather than Backstrom? I don't see it...

Tavares and Backstrom are very close offensively and defensively, more so than Tavares and Hall or Tavares and Duchene.

Voted JT, good poll OP.

Very close offensively and defensively? I don't see that. Actually, there are good arguments to be made that Backstrom is a good bit ahead of Tavares in both categories.

Tavares hit almost PPG this year as a 22 year old. When Backstrom was 22 he hit 101.

Backstrom in NHL:

82GP 14G 55A 69P
82GP 22G 66A 88P
82GP 33G 68A 101P
77GP 18G 47A 65P
42GP 14G 30A 44P
48GP 8G 40A 48P

Best finishes:
Assists: 3rd, 3rd, 3rd
Points: 4th, 9th

Tavares in NHL:
82GP 24G 30A 54P
79GP 29G 38A 67P
82GP 31G 50A 81P
48GP 28G 19A 47P

Best Finishes:
Goals 3rd
Assists 9th
Points 7th

Adding in the edge Backstrom has in defensive play I would actually say that the margin of which Backs is better is still clear.

IMO, Tavares has better offensive potential he just hasn't been able to reach that potential. Until he does it is hard for me to say that Tavares>Backstrom. Cause Backstrom is more reliable defensive player. If he outscores Tavares then how the heck are we going to pretend that Tavares is better? Potential=/=Production

Edit:

I agree with you on the idea that Duchene is not a good comparable to Tavares but Hall is not that far off.

John Tavares, the goal-scorer of the two, hasn't reached Backstrom's career high in goals.

Backstrom has 4 seasons at a point-per-game or better. Tavares has 0.

Tavares is not close to Backstrom defensively.

Really, the only argument for Tavares over Backstrom is their teammates, which is an incredibly weak argument.

If the answer to this poll gets an "AINEC" qualifier, it should be for Backstrom over Tavares.

Backstrom

If people are going to use the teammate argument against backstrom, people should start watching international tournaments more, I'd say usually he's one of the (if not the) best forwards for team sweden.

Also as some said Backstrom is far more superior defensively, he's also stronger on the puck, a better skater and a better passer. Currently the only thing I see better from Tavares than Backstrom is his goal scoring abilities. Even this part of Backstroms game is underrated, as he has a really nice shot.

Actually it is even 20. He has more goals more assists and more points in a season but somehow magically Tavares is better offensively.

Remember last year when everyone said Ovechkin was done...Backstrom was top 5 in the league in points before being concussed while Ovechkin was barely able to get a shot off let alone in the back of the net.

Backstrom has now become one of the most underrated players on HF. Tavares has become one of the most overrated. Backstrom is a proven PPG player even in situations where Ovechkin has sucked.

Spot on, hit the nail on the head. Backstrom has 4 PPG seasons, and has a 101 point season.

The overrated Tavares has 0 PPG seasons, and is not as good in any category as Backstrom.

This is such a weird poll. Majority of comments are pro Backstrom but the poll is a landslide in favour of Tavares.

I'm going to guess that this means a lot of the Tavares votes are made without as much analysis as the Backstrom votes. Or something.

Use your own advice. Tavares has torn it up for Canada at the WC's when he's the Isles have been out of the playoffs. When the guy has legit 1st liners to play with (which he honestly has never had, PAP is the closest thing to a legit 1st liner IMO but more of a 2nd) he is pretty amazing. The fact that he produces as much as he has with the linemates he's had is mind boggling.

I noticed as well .

Tavares is great and I think that he has the potential to surpass Backstrom in the next couple of seasons in terms of offense. Defensively I doubt it but I could be wrong.

At this point in time Tavares is still in the range that Backstrom was 07/08, 08/09 and 09/10 in terms of offensive zone starts (about 60%) and quality of competition. Backstrom's numbers went down after 09/10 partly because his offensive zone starts decreased, i.e. less sheltered (49% this year) and the quality of competition increased.

With regards to playing with Ovi or not I think that stats read something like this for Backstrom (07/08-12/13, EV stats):
G/20 min with Ovi: 0.196
A/20 min with Ovi: 0.518
P/20 min with Ovi: 0.714
G/20 min without Ovi: 0.238
A/20 min without Ovi: 0.477
P/20 min without Ovi: 0.715

Note that this is stats for even strength.

Sure no one can know what will happen if Tavares plays with Ovi and I do understand that a player carrying a team in the way he does can be considered a Hart candidate (I think he'll be top 5 this year) but that doesn't necessarily mean that he is the better player in terms of pure quality.

Isles fan here. Whoever is saying Tavares AINEC is high. I think they're even right now, Backstrom might have a slight edge because he's better defensively but Tavares' will almost definitely surpass him, offensively at least.

Bäckström is still better. Tavares is maybe more skilled offensively but Bäcks has better overall game.

So the people saying Tavares think that if Tavares had a player like Oveckin on his wing he'd would have a 100 point season?

Lol.... Backstrom is better offensively and defensively..... Sigh.. Already sick of Tavares hype on these boards. Trade Tavares to a relevant team and he will be hated just like the guys better than him.
