It's weird because the only time Orpik and Martin have looked good over the past couple years is when they're paired together.

Yeah we're turning the puck over too much so we're missing the guy who turns it over the most.

Yes we are, not trying to call people out, we all have are opinions, sometimes were right and sometimes were wrong, but i have no idea why this board has been so hard on him, Martin Orpik pairing was best def pairing by far this year, and by the way they were matched up against the other teams best players every game.

Yeah, no. We're not missing Orpik's play. We might be missing him in the dressing room, but he's probably there anyway.

We need to execute better. I think we're missing Vitale's speed and tenacity on the 4th line, and I would love to see Dustin Jeffrey there, as well. If Crosby & Malkin are both back and healthy, I don't really see the need for JJ, but if they're going to put JJ in there, I'd rather see this:

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Bennett-Malkin-Iginla
Morrow-Sutter-Cooke
Adams/JJ-Jeffrey-Vitale (with Vitale taking some draws)

Anyway you slice it, I don't see how Glass is better than Vitale in any respect other than maybe dropping the gloves, which doesn't happen very often.

The transition game's success is obviously key to controlling the flow of the game and winning. Putting Brooks Orpik into the line-up is not the answer, no matter how well he's playing.

I hope people are smart enough to realize that settling in against an aggressive forecheck is a problem for the coaching staff, or maybe someone like Chris Pronger during his Edmonton days.

So Orpik was out there Wednesday night?

And Orpik wasn't out there last year against the Flyers?

The more you know.

Brooks Orpik is much, much, MUCH better than Deryk Engelland, so if it's him or Engelland, yes we are missing Brooks Orpik.

Your comment about the transition, Orpik can skate and move the puck, he can do so a hell of a lot better than Engelland can, does he turn it over when passing? Some times or most of the time, yes. But he can just go to his D partner Martin to make the passes. That makes the transition game better, being able to skate the puck out of your zone and playing with a mobile defenseman in Paul Martin.

Engelland can't skate, and has no puck skills, if Orpik isn't back in Sunday, I say you replace Engelland with Despres and roll...

Despres-Letang
Eaton-Martin
Murray-Niskanen

Won't happen I know, but bottom line is, we will need Orpik if we want playoff success and we will probably need him in the lineup if we want to win the series.

I was fully on the "Orpik sucks" bandwagon but we need him in the playoffs.

Just curious, Can you explain why would you rather see DJ in over Jokinen?

Yes Engelland def. needs to go, Despres or Bortuzo would be an upgrade there regardless.

This board finally gets what they want (Opik out of the lineup) and now we want him back?

Orpik is not the quintessential missing link, but he is definitely an upgrade over Engo. His return would certainly help the team and I hope to see him back soon.

Orpik has been badly inconsistent this season, and I don't know how much they miss him out there. But I do know I'd much rather have him out there than Engelland.

Orpik was out there for the Cup win

Orpik was out there during our 15 game winning streak.

See, that was easy.

The trouble is Orpik is good only with Martin to cover up for him, but Martin needs to play half the game for us. And so we end up with Orpik out there far too much, and then we end up with bonehead icing plays, turnovers, and general tomfoolery that leads to goals against.

We need Orpik to return if for no other reason than Martin returning to the form we saw this season before his injury. We're going to need Martin to play to that level, especially with Letang playing like an idiot.

I have no issue with Orpik being out. I do have an issue with Bylsma playing Niskanen and Martin out of position for no reason whatsoever.

Last night, we looked exactly like we did last spring when Orpik was in the lineup. He's not a difference-maker, good or bad, anymore. He's just a body.

No, we don't. We won 5-0 with him out of the line-up, and if you think Orpik of all people would've curbed our stupid decision-making yesterday, you haven't been paying attention the past couple years.

Engelland played poorly yesterday, along with just about every other Pens defenseman including Letang and Martin. He was stellar on Wednesday, but you know, what have you done for us lately? Because this is HF where people have the memories of fruit flies, and the more sensationalistic you can make a situation appear, the better.

We probably would've lost with or without Orpik yesterday. He helps our break-out some but he's not so big an influence there as to be a game changer when the rest of the team is playing that sloppy. And he's not a big help clearing the crease area any longer (we've seen that over and over this year).
