He considered RNH the 5th best rookie in the league last year.

Wouldn't pay him much heed.

He's a stats guy yet he ignores the stats which clearly indicate RNH was hands down the best rookie last season.

Not a fan of Cullen. He's there to help out people in their office pools, that's basically it. He's no more an expert than any of us. He also lacks personality and charisma that you would expect from someone who has a career with TSN. He must be someone specials kid.

Well seeing as he's the so-called fantasy guru for TSN. I can see how he favors a guy like Landeskog over RNH. A 5 tool guy like Landeskog is much more valuable than RNH and his points/PPP.

But it's still the wrong way to look at voting. I'm sure he doesn't even watch the games. Just goes through the stats and goes from there.

outside of a select few media people, the bolded part is true for all media types.... this is doubly true when you compare hardcore fans of any team to a media guy who covers the entire league.... the fan will know more than the media guy 95% of the time

Then, one day, it all changed. He all of a sudden put John Scott (relation?) atop his power rankings and thought Yakupov the worst rookie.

Meth, not even once.

Saad, Gallagher and Huberdeau.

What a F***ing joke.

Edit: Sad part is this quote:

"Huberdeau, the No. 3 pick in 2011, finished second on the Panthers in scoring with 31 points (14 goals, 17 assists) in 48 contests. Huberdeau tied for first in rookie scoring with Edmonton Oilers winger Nail Yakupov, who was the No. 1 pick in 2012."

Gallagher and Huberdeau I get. But Saad? The same Saad who rode shotgun with Jonathan Toes all year? I hate that the stupid voters don't consider stuff like that. I'm pretty sure that its safe to say that Yakupov, Gallagher or Huberdeau would have had even more points had they been playing with Toews instead of their respective line mates. I won't say that Yak should have won for sure, personally my vote would be for Huberdeau, but I just don't see how Saad can be in the final three. I guess its another case of Oiler hate or discrimination against Russians? Or hate because of his celly's. I dunno.

Rant over.

I would have picked Schultz over Saad-- but Saad had a solid year

Oiler fans suffer sometimes from short term memory-- Yakupov did not do his damage until april--there were two months were due to how he was handled he did not lit the stat sheet up

Absolute Garbage.

Garbage.

I get that he may not have been the winner- but to not be a finalist for a player who led ALL rookies in goals and tied with scoring?

Garbage. Shame on the Eastern media.

It's not really that shocking guys, you're getting worked up for no reason. I don't think they look at linemates and make a determination of worthiness based on that so the fact that Saad played with Toews isn't much of a factor IMO.
All 3 of those guys were just as good if not better than Yakupov throughout the season so i'm not that upset about him not getting nominated. Yakupov had a big lull during the middle of the season when he was buried on the 3rd line and was pretty much a non-factor so i think that was the final "Nail" in his coffin.

IMO, Brodin should have been nominated and was the most impactful of all the rookies.
He earned his way on to the top pairing of a playoff team and looked outstanding in doing so even if Suter helped his transition.

yes because scoring the most goals for a rookie and being tied in points for the lead means nothing..
Huberdeau had nothing over Yak in terms of any of the stats ..

Yak considering his stats, age etc should easily have been a finalist.. and there is no other rookie I would take over him making him the most valuable

Wow that's a huge snub for nail but on the bright side I'd be even more pissed off if I was a Wild fan and not having Brodin nominated.

IMO the calder voting should have been Brodin - Yakupov - Galagher and then having Huberdeau a close/debateable 4th/3rd.

Saad being nominated was a joke, the guy was a nobody until he was put on Towes line.

well he still outscored all the other rookies.. Rookie of the year does not go to the most consistent rookie but to the best one... Yak put up the points and won the rookie race.. Should have been the winner.
Brodin is like when we had Smid playing big minutes as a 18yo for us.. Pair Brodin up with Nick Schultz for 40 games and lets see how good he is.

There were at least a half dozen potential candidates, and no single one really separated themselves from the pack, so there are naturally going to be some worthy players left off.

No need to freak out about it.

Amazing that huberdeau gets picked over yak despite having less goals yet rnh lost the Calder last year for that exact reason
