Package Gunnarsson for a real 2nd pairing defenseman.

I didn't see much out of the ordinary.

That's the way he plays the game, perhaps he had a couple more opportunities to cover up for some freelancers, but that's who he is.

Same last year.

He's Carl.

He was the Leafs' leading scorer in the 196364, 196667 and 196970 seasons, and the team's top goal scorer in 197071 and 197273. Keon was considered one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, and one of the best defensive forwards of his era.[3] He would usually play against the opposing team's top centre, and developed a reputation for neutralizing some of the league's top scorers. In 197071, he scored eight shorthanded goals, setting an NHL record.

Carl "Steady Eddy" Gunnarsson.

Nothing to see here folks move along , as this is simply par for the course when it comes to him.

He's steady but I don't think he's a top pairing dman.

Next year:

Rielly - Phaneuf
Gunnarsson - Gardiner
Fraser - Franson
-Ranger/O'Byrne/Blacker

And we would still have Percy, Finn, Nilsson, MacWilliam, Blacker, Granberg, Loov coming up the pipes...

Gunnarsson is incredibly under appreciated , such a dam good defencemen and deserves much more credit than he gets. Afterall, had he not stop a 2 on 1 , we could have lost on Saturday

Rielly will not be a top pairing defenseman, barring a miracle, if he in fact even makes the team.. If he does he will begin with a limited role similarly to how we saw Carlyle handle Kadri this season.

Until he is replaced with someone better Gunnarsson is still the 2nd best Dman on the Leafs and has been a good partner for Phaneuf.

we NEED to bring him back. he's a solid 2 way dman able to play 22-25min/gm while taking on top 3 opponents. for the right price i want him long term.

Gunnarsson had a poor season in comparison to his previous year in TO, possibly due to injury, but last night he was definitly amoung our better defensemen. I hope he can keep up his play!

This is the Gunnarsson we're more used to seeing. The one that we kept on insisting was a top 4 D when others kept on saying he was just a bottom pairing guy. I stand by my comments earlier in the year that said he was playing badly because for some games, he certainly was not good. However, it seems that he's back into his groove and is showing us just what he's capable of. Thankfully, it's happening at the right time as well, so good on him.

Missed the game, but saw the game in six and Gunnarson stood out a few times. By the sounds of thing he had a good night overall.

He's not a game-breaker even at the best of times, but he'll give you 20+ quality minutes of near mistake-free hockey in your top 4, which the Leafs haven't had consistantly this season outside of Phaneuf. If he's back to the top of his game, his presence can make a difference.

I like this. I also like the idea of using Gardiner to get a RH for Dion if a guy like Percy or Blacker were ready for the Leafs.

Phaneuf-(Gardiner's get)
Gunnarsson-Percy/Blacker
Fraser-Franson

This gives you room on the left side for Reilly's development (he's the real reason I'd look at moving Gardiner, who I still like a lot) and gives you the right defensive-minded veteran you'd need to grow a young guy like Percy or Blacker in his rookie year.

But if it's Gardiner/Gunnar paired together next year I'm pretty happy (assuming we do better than Kostka with Dion at the same time).

I am assuming you are just talking about next year, right Mess.

Because I had be shocked if Rielly doesn't turn out as a legit top-pairing d-man down the road. Way too much skill, hockey sense off the charts, and he makes offensive plays out of nothing like very few.

Definitely a potential contender and probably more likely than Blacker/Percy given Carlyle's tendencies. Basically, I like keeping Gunnar around to break in newbs, although Granberg would have to be pretty polished to make the club already wouldn't he? I'd say Carl is less of a bonus if you're developing a stay-at-home instead of a puck mover. Not that he'd be bad for that either, but I see some value in him being a good vet to pair with developing guys with some offensive upside.

Also, I just realized Percy is left-handed. It's stupid 'cause I've seen him play, but HF has him listed RH (everywhere else as LH) and it's just stuck in my head that way. Maybe he's still in the running, but Randy sure does seem to prefer using lefties on the left and righties on the right.
