I would do whatever it takes to sign Regehr, Clowe and bring Lapierre back home.

Re-sign Armstrong but not Ryder. Find a partner for Desharnais (and of course Weber, Kaberle or Gionta if there's a taker out there).

Pacioretty-Plekanec-Bourque
Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher
Clowe-Lapierre-Gionta (if not traded, has another year left on contract)
Prust-White-Moen
---
Armstrong
Dumont
Blunden
Kristo
Leblanc

Regehr-Subban
Markov-Gorges
Tinordi-Emelin
---
Diaz
Beaulieu
Pateryn

Price
Budaj

More size throughout and let Galchenyuk and Gallagher fully grasp top six roles.

Let's take a look at what we have that are sure shot:

Left Wing
Max Pacioretty
Brandon Prust
Rene Bourque

Center
Tomas Plekanec
Lars Eller
Alex Galchenyuk

Right Wing
Brendan Gallagher
Ryan White

Defense
P.K. Subban
Josh Gorges
Raphael Diaz
Alexei Emelin
Jarred Tinordi
Francis Bouillon

UFA Ryder, Halpern, Drewiske, Nokelainen and Armstrong are gone by the end of the year.
Kaberle will be bough back.
I have put Gionta, Desharnais, Moen, Blunden, Weber and Markov are on the limbo.

So now we have 1 spot in defense and 4 spots for forward, 1 4th line center, 2 right wing and 1 left wing.

For the defense spot, I have already put Tinordi in the starting lineup, I think he show enough to deserve it. Beaulieu need at least another year in the minor. Beside that I don't think we have anyone ready for next year, so we need at least one defenseman via UFA or trade.

4th line center:
I love Dumont but he is small, is there anyone out there with some size and grit + a good defensive mind available?

As for the winger, Bergevin will need to pull some magic or grossly overpay to have descent winger on the market (UFA or trade).
Leblanc could be a solution IF he bounce back from is miserable season.
Beside him, I don't see anyone in the minor.
Could Clutterbuck be available? Clarkson will stay in New Jersey. Clowe will cost an arm and a leg...

I don't have any clear answer, I have question only.

Realistically, this is what I expect our lineup to be next season (kind of similar to this season):

Pacioretty - Plekanec - Gionta
Galchenyuk - Eller - Gallagher
Prust - Desharnais - Bourque
xxx - White - Moen

Subban - Gorges
Markov - Emelin
Bouillon - Tinordi

Price
Budaj

I think our main need is a top 4D to replace Emelin and push him down to the 3rd pairing

UFA defensemen available:
Robyn Regehr
Ryan Whitney
Mark Streit
Rob Scuderi
Douglas Murray
Andrew Ference

From Chicago:

Bryan Bickell
Viktor Stalberg

Both UFAs. Both decent possession players. Good targets, in my opinion.

Every one looking at ufa, but for some reason, i think Bergevin will use a trade to fix our toughness problem.

I think you're partially right. There's a very good chance Bergevin can sign one of the bigger wingers this offseason and I think he will pursue that option before he moves assets. He needs to put his mark on the team and shake up some of the older pieces from the PG/Gainey era. Based on our past trades and his own experiences in Chicago, I think St.Louis, Nashville, Calgary, Florida, San Jose and Chicago are all teams we could see Bergevin make trades with.

I'm not really seeing the necessity of a trade. With both Clarkson and Bickell pending UFAs, why give up assets when those two would offer a great toughness upgrade while not sacrificing actual hockey ability. Clarkson especially is a good possession guy, and Bickell is no slouch.

If we need to trade to make room, we can give up other guys FOR assets.

We're not getting Bickell unless we way overpay. The Hawks will almost certainly re-sign him. Stahlberg will be let go but will cost too much

Trade DD + Pateryn to Tampa Bay for Pick and Prospect
Trade Gionta to Devils for the rights to negotiate with David Clarkson + 4th round pick in 2013.
Trade Diaz to Edmonton for 2nd round pick (2014) + B level prospect.
Trade Moen to the Avalanche for 5th round pick.

Sign Bryan Bickell, Viktor Stalberg, David Clarkson and Rob Scuderi.

Bourque-Plekanec-Clarkson

Subban-Gorges

Just looking at the UFA list on capgeek, there are all kinds of pending UFAs fitting that "large winger who doesn't suck at hockey" type of role:

Bickell
Clarkson
Torres
Stalberg
Horton
Clowe
Penner
Richardson

All are plus-corsi players.

Why trade?

Next year i'm letting Ryder go, dumping Kaberle, letting Armstrong go, and trying to pickup a big D via free agency or trade. That's it.

Instead of picking up forwards, i'd just give more ice time Gallagher, Galchenyuk, Eller and even a guy like Dumont. Kristo could also surprise as well, he'd be an older rookie. I'd start to look forwards again once Gionta's contract expires.

I'm already pretty pumped for a D next year that includes Tinordi and Emelin. Man I love this team.

Penner is ultra lazy.

Richardson is a 4th liner.

Most of the rest may not reach UFA status or cost a fortune.

I'm also of the mind that we try to get Beaulieu more time next year, because I don't want to re-sign Markov. I'd like to have Beaulieu as ready as possible for the 2014-15 season, where our D should look something like this:

Subban-Emelin
Gorges-(ufa or traded D)
Diaz-Tinordi
Beaulieu

If we could fill out the D corps with a guy like Barret Jackman or Hjarmalsson, we would be in great shape. Don't know who's available then, but that's the type of guy we could use.

what i think Bergevin will do. Seeing as if it's Bergy's first Free agency he will probably be a little scared to make BIG BIG moves. But i see him signing a couple guys MAYBE Dropping Kaberle and maybe making a trade.

A) Sign David Clarkson OR Ryan Clowe , I don't know much about these guys and how much they'd want but i have MTL Signing Clarkson at 3.5m.

B) Buyout Thomas kaberle , Of course this is only if we don't trade him for a 6th or 7th. But who would want him...

C) Re-sign Ryan White , White can get loose and rough sometimes but he plays with his heart and is'nt afraid to stand up for his teammate's. He also is ok in the faceoff zone and we need a 4th line center. Im going to assume we sign him near 750K. This also means we don't have to call up players like louis leblanc and play him on the 4th line rather then getting top 6 minutes in the AHL.

D) OPTIONAL , Trade Rapheal Diaz , Andrei Markov and/or David Desharnais. I find Markov is getting way to old and is getting slower and it's showing. Subban however is still very young and is getting great at the powerplay and is starting to not need Markov as much.
Im going to Assume Markov and DD Stay but MArkov would be highly shopped at trade deadline and if DD doesn't step up his game , DD aswell. However i assume we would trade Diaz For Futures (im not talking **** future's im talking decent futures or a good peice)

E) With the tradeing of Diaz this leaves a hole but i think Therrien will Call up Tinordi rather then signing someone else.

Here's What i got in conclusion:

FORWARDS
Rene Bourque ($3.333m) / Tomas Plekanec ($5.000m) / Brian Gionta ($5.000m)
Max Pacioretty ($4.500m) / David Desharnais ($3.500m) / David Clarkson ($3.500m)
Alex Galchenyuk ($3.225m) / Lars Eller ($1.325m) / Brendan Gallagher ($0.870m)
Travis Moen ($1.850m) / Ryan White ($0.750m) / Brandon Prust ($2.500m)
DEFENSEMEN
P.K. Subban ($2.875m) / Josh Gorges ($3.900m)
Andrei Markov ($5.750m) / Alexei Emelin ($2.000m)

GOALTENDERS

why people think Bryan Bickell is the answer for the lack of toughness? He have good size but he's not a physical beast. We need more toughness, more than what Bickell would bring.

I don't think we can fix our toughness problem in one summer. It's not that hard to add physical 7th dman or 4th liner but I don't see any top 6 physical or top 4 dman player available.

Imo :
Sing Bickell or trade for Cluterbuck
Trade for Dalton Proult ( 6'3 220lbs RH dman, 23 y/o)
Keep Tinordi on the roster

I would like J.Boll , but I think he's a fan favourite

Rene Bourque ($3.333m) - Tomas Plekanec ($5.000m) - Brian Gionta ($5.000m)
Max Pacioretty ($4.500m) - Lars Eller ($1.325m) - XXXXX
XXXXX - Alex Galchenyuk ($3.225m) - Brendan Gallagher ($0.870m)
Brandon Prust ($2.500m) - XXXXX - Ryan White ($0.750m)

GOALTENDERS
Carey Price ($6.500m)
Peter Budaj ($1.400m)

With this lineup, our salary is $53.361m.

Free Agents:
3rd line left wing - Victor Stalberg or Bryan Bickell
4th line centre - Maxim Lapierre or Boyd Gordon
2nd pairing D - Ron Hainsey or Mark Fistric

Trades:
Trade Desharnais, Diaz and maybe prospects like Dumont and Ellis to get a 2nd line RW with size and grit. I like Wayne Simmonds from Philly but he may not be available. I think Clarkson and Clowe will be way too expensive.

Its more likely Hawks let them both walk at this point (Cant afford 3M+ tied up in 3rd liners going forward cap wise ,, Just not smart)

+ LW Jeremy Morin , RW Ben Smith and RW Jimmy Hayes all played well in Rockford and in limited times with Hawks and eventually the Hawks either gotta get them on roster to trade them

Only way I think Hawks bring back one of Bickell/Stalberg is by trading Bolland thus freeing up $$$ to sign one of those 2

Crazy thought. I really like Gorges and his shot blocking is nice but if possible would you trade him to move up?

Gorges and 2013 1st for Edm 7th overall and D - Dillon Simpson.

We can add a B prospect if need be. Gorges helps Edm defense plus they still get a 1st rd pick. We pick up a high 1st and with Tinordi playing well and Bealieau, Pateryn, & Dietz coming up we're good for depth.

Sign someone like Rob Scuderi.

Subban-Markov
Emelin-Tinordi
Diaz-Scuderi
Bouillon

Probably future assets at this point (Picks/Long term prospects)

Bolland is divisive figure here. Hawk fans are sick of him and the attempt to play #2 C was a complete disaster

Hawks ideally would package him with other assets for a real #2 C but I doubt that happens
