Yep. That last goal by U.S.A and seeing Bryz duck and cover his head - he just lost the starting job for Sochi. Put Varly in and leave him in.

I hope he lost it a long time ago and this is just Bill testing him for a backup A or backup B.

Russia has Varlamov and a probable Vezina trophy winner.

Great game to watch. Credit to the US for a really stellar effort. Also great credit to Russia for not buckling under and continuing to fight until they pulled out the victory. Bryzgalov was really shaky throughout, but the defense put the clamps down just before the last half of the game, and allowed very few opportunities past the midway mark. Aside from the obvious Kovy and Rady, I was really impressed with several guys out there, particularly Petrov, Mozyakin and Medvedev. Finding a way to win when the going is tough is really important.

Can anybody comment on how Trouba did against a better team? I noticed he had no ice time in the 3rd, do you guys think he was legitimately benched or did the coach decide to lean on the veterans?

With Sacco behind the bench, who knows.

I don't see too much wrong with forwards having lower sweater numbers.

I was happy with the showing from the US team to be honest. I'd hoped they'd keep the game close and they did until the last half of the third. The forward group on this team is just far too weak to expect much more.

He was benched after trying to skate through the Russian team on his own and turning the puck over with the Russians scoring on the rush back. I've been surprised by how much ice time he's gotten to be honest. He's had some shaky moments and I think he should be played more sparingly going forward in the tournament.

Most of the best Americans are either in the play offs or declined invitations. There's really only one forward on this team that could possibly make a top US team.

Yes, but I didn't want to say anything.

Certain posters will "Rabidly" talk about the U.S.'s "vaunted depth" but it is mostly a myth.

It seemed like Russia just coasted this game, they seemed like they knew they were going to win, even when they were down. Outside of Bryz, everyone looked great. Besides Kovy and Radu, our KHL guys played great too. Mozyakin was a magician out there. Medvedev, Belov and Nikulin had great games. I expect our Sochi defense to be made mostly out of KHL players and rightfully so as it seems our best ones play there. While this roster may look lackluster to the western hockey fans due to the unrecognizable KHL names, it is quite good and very close to the one we will see in Sochi. I expect just the addition of Datsyuk, Malkin, Ovechkin and Semin as far as the forwards go. Maybe one or two NHL defensemen and obviously Bobrovsky in net.

Regardless of what happens in Sochi it is nice to see how many talented young players we have to leave off due to not having any room for them. There are many countries that would love to have Kuznetsov, Yakupov, Tarasenko, Grigorenko, Tikhonov, etc.

Really? When have I made that argument? This is a very pedestrian team. I guess I should be thankful most of our depth is in the playoffs though...

I didn't see it but I'm glad Team USA made a competitive game of it. A shame they apparently fell apart in the third but lessons learned hopefully.

Don't worry. Luongo is 2nd string, MAF had another breakdown tonight and Price is a mess. You/They may, in fact, get the last laugh in 2014.

Oh, what Team Canada 2014 could be if we just had AVERAGE goaltending.

I don't disagree with you. We just can't develop goalies for some strange reason.

Maybe we should ask "them" what they're doing right.

It's not just "them". It seems everyone has at least one elite goalie but us.

I don't think the top Russian goalies are any better than their Canadian counterparts. Czech goalies are even worse.

Not at all. The US just doesn't give a damn about this tournament and never did. If they send a bunch of college boys and some 4th liners from the NHL you can't expect more. It's a pity actually, we all would love to see the best players in this tournament.
