He played a total of 5 games 4-5 years ago for the BJs, but he's now 28 years old. Didn't you notice him last season when he played for the Pack?

Anyways, Blake's a player/assistant coach this year, so he's mostly looking to stay put rather than bounce around between the AHL/ECHL/UHL like he has the past few years.

The Checkers have anounced their 11th signing for the upcoming season.

25 year-old defenseman Kenny Smith, a 3rd year pro who suited up for the Greenvile Grrowl in the ECHL and the Portland Pirates in the AHL, putting up 1G and 3A in 11 ECHL games and no goals and 8A in 48 AHL games. Smith is a former 3rd round draft pick (Edmonton 2001) and played four years at Harvard.

Smith is the 3rd player the Checkers have signed from their folded rival, the Grrowl. He also creaes an interesting challenge for the Checkers' equipmant manager since the team will have Kenny Smitth and Kenton Smith patrolling the blueline.

The Checkers have acquired the rights to 26 year-old defenseman Matt Deschamps from the Fresno Falcons for future considerations. If signed, Deschamps will be the 14th player signed by the Checkers for the upcoming season.

This season will be Matt's 2nd pro season. At Fresno last season, he registerd 2G and 9A in 63 games. Prior to that, he played 4 years for the U of Maine Black Bears, where he was teammates with Greg Moore and Billy Ryan.

Also, the Checkers announced their training camp unsigned invited players. Nothing to get excited about, since between the 14 players the Checkers haves sgined, plus the bunch of players the Pack is going to assgn to Charlotte, there won't be any room on the 20 man roster. They just are filler players holding down spots while the Packis still running their camp. Then again, Luke Stauffenbach made the team last year as an unsigned tryout.......

I'll just list name, age, position, and where they played last year.

Andrew Dawe: 23 F Canisisus (NCAA-Atlantic). Andrew is the cousin of former Ranger/WolfPack/Checker Jason Dawe.

Noah Katz 23 C Fayetteville/Huntsville (SPHL) and Fort Worth (CHL)

Phil Youngclaus 23 D U of Vermont

Jorge Alves 27 G South Caroline/Greenville (ECHL) Local guy (N.C. State) who bounces around as an emergency back-up goalie.

Cullen didn't go to the Islanders. He is in their camp as a free-agent tryout. Since he's no longer under contract to the Rangers, he is free to be signed by any other NHL or AHL team. He's under contract to Charlotte as far as the ECHL goes.

Cullen had a fight in a scrimmage match a few days ago and beat Brendan Witt.

I wonder why the Rangers gave up on him. I know he had injuries, and what ever happen to Ryan Cuthbert??

Cullen is 25 and still hasn't been able to crack an AHL lineup. Do you REALLY think he's worth one of the Rangers' 50 allowed contracts? Cuthbert still has PCS and will almost certainly retire.

The Wolf Pack trimmed their roster by 12 today, dropping most of the Checkers players on ECHL contracts invited to camp. Checkers signees Ren Fauci, Kenny Smith, Dan Murphy, Adam Nightingale, and Daymen Rycroft will return to Charlotte. Other invitees (Cole Byers, Mike Gabinet, Matt Smyth, Brett Smith, and Jeff Valdes) were released outright, although some might be invited to Checkers camp. Also, two AHL-contracted players (Alex Westlund and Mike Oulette) were assigned to Charlotte.

Out of the 27 players remaining in camp, Mark Lee is the only remaining invited Checker. The remaining unsigned players are Franis Lessard, Mike Hoffman, Dale Purinton, and Ryan Constant.

Goalies: Holt, Montoya
Defense: Degon, Richter, Liffiton, Purinton, Girardi, Lampman, Potter, Constant, Taylor (injured)
Forwards: Moore, Kozak, Helminen, Korpikoski, Jessiman, Weller, Graham, Falardeau, Bahensky, Petruzalek, Callahan, Byers, Dubinsky, Lessard, Hoffman, Lee

Last pre-season game is today.

The ECHL concluded it's preseason meeting this weekend. Read thesummary.

The ECHL will ice 25 teams this year (with the usual 72-game schedule) and will again have unbalanced conferences and divisions. The Checkers will play in the South Division of the American Coference. The South Division will have 8 teams (the most of any division) and the top 5 teams will make the playoffs, with the 4th and 5th place teams playing a best-of-3 to determine who will face the division leader.

Here are the South Division teams, their affiliates and the number of games the Checkers will play them:

Charlotte Checkers (Rangers/WolfPack)
Augusta Lynx (Ducks/Pirates) 10 games
Columbia Inferno (Maple Leafs/Marlies) 9 games
Florida Everblades (Hurricanes/Panthers/River Rats) 9 games
Gwinnett Gladiators (Thrashers/Wolves) 9 games
Pensacola Ice Pilots (Islanders/Sound Tigers) 9 games
South Carolina Stingrays (Capitols/Bears) 11 games
Texas Wildcatters (Aeros) 6 games

Nate Gillies has been released from River Rats camp in Albany and will attend Checkers camp as an unsigned invitee. Brandon Cullen will almost certainly be signed by the Islanders and will play in Bridgeport and Ryan Glenn is still at Baby Bruins camp.

Actually, it looks like Byers didn't make the cut. Didn't see a notice that he was let go, though
