Sakic Takes Over All Hockey Operations

Sounds like it's getting close to being official.

Sportsnet's Daren Millard:

Ooh, a notoriously quiet Avalanche legend in a position of seemingly all-encompassing power

What could go wrong

Sounds like half of a GM role, focusing on player management. Sherman and Billington probably take over contracts, finances, etc.

Unreal. Sakic is a winner and wants the Avalanche to win. I love this.

My thoughts:

I bet Sakic takes over for Lacroix. Billington gets bumped up to assistant GM, with Sherman keeping his title as GM. I could also see Sherman getting bumped down, but stay with the team, we'll see.

I'm over the moon thrilled with this, especially if it means the Lacroix regime is over. He's had his time, but we need a new direction. Sakic can do that. That likely includes having a great amount of influence in bringing in new, fresh faces to help run the team not only in management but in coaching too.

Very happy with this decision from Joe.

Finally some news. Still need to wait for McKenzie or LeBrun to confirm but this is a good start.

Best part about this is that Lacroix is out. At least I hope that's what this means.

Wow, still kinda surprised he said yes. Had the feeling he might turn it down.

As good a player as Sakic was, it does not mean that he'll be wonderful on the mangement side of things. He learned from Sheramn and Lacroix after all. However, I do expect good things. Especially if he's out talking to free agents. Who's going to say no to Joe Sakic?

The bottom line is that he's a hockey guy. He recognizes talent. He has great connections within hockey and will be able to surround himself with good people.

It's great news and mostly because he'll have the ability to give the franchise new blood by bringing in (hopefully) some fresh faces in new roles.

People who really know hockey know what it means to be the president of a team's hockey operations....no?

It means he's likely going to be the guy in charge of final decisions on all hirings, firings, trades, signings. Just like Lacroix has been in the past.

Sakic is a winner and he's level headed. Hopefully this signals a change in culture within the organization.

Laxroix did good things for Avs but it's time for him to enjoy his retirement in Vegas.

How so? Elway has managed a couple of businesses outside of the NFL successfully and won an Arena League championship in a management role. What has Sakic done that's even close to Elway's management experience?

Good players recognize good players. Look at what Elway has done for the Broncos, he really didn't have much experience going into his gig with the Broncos (he did some work in the arena league) and has turned the team 180 degrees from when he took over. Its not just the PM signings, he has helped the team draft better and helped them go after the right players (not necessarily the most talented but the right players for the team) in UFA and trades.

Sakic might not be the most vocal person on the planet, but I have full confidence that he can evaluate up and coming talent and evaluate the talent we have currently on the ice to see where we are lacking and what we need to get better.

Or it's just a meaningless title. WHo could be certain really?

That would be perfect imo. I think Sakic, Sherman and Billington would make a hell of a management team.

Please an arena league team, come on. Hasn't that league folded? Yes Elway had some minor experience, but not really. He pretty much went from the bottom to the top in terms of management. Sakic will be fine as long as they are using him for evaluating talent and not for contracts and other higher end management things.
