Being in charge of hockey operations is a big job.

Having a former players as a "senior adviser" is a PR stunt. But not this.

I'd like to know what this really means. Does Sakic just take over EL's job? PL's job? EL's job plus half of Sherman's job, while Billington gets the other half?

I guess we will see when it is announced, but taking over hockey operations is kind of vague.... I'm hoping he is taking over PL's job while Sherman and Billington run the GM duties.

Someone call Peter Forsberg to be our international scout and we are all set.

Well this is still yet to be decided, what his actual title might be. But, if he's the president of hockey operations, that's exactly what his role would be. He would likely be the final decision maker on anything hockey. That's how teams are run and guys with that title make the calls.

No, not really. Not if that's what his title actually ends up being.

People in "president of hockey operations" roles are usually the final decision makers on signings, firings, hirings, trades, etc within the hockey side of an organization.

They would be the guy to fire the coach or GM, for example.

I understand that, but having that title while still being under PL means a hell of a lot less.

I 100% agree. This "take over" means nothing if Lacroix is still involved, at least you would have to imagine.

That's fine if you want to scoff at the Arena League, but the point remains Elway brought a fair amount of management experience to his front office role through his business dealings and as owner of the Crush. Sakic brings zero experience to the table. The only commonality between the two is both were once great players. If you believe that automatically makes Sakic ready for a front office role you're naive.

I trust Sakic too but what are you basing this on?

Yep. I could see this being PL being out now, PL being out in a year after 'grooming' Sakic more, or just a shuffling of the deck and everything really staying the same.

Cam Neely stepped into a similar role without any real background and seems to have done just fine. Who knows?

Not excited. Sakic has no experience beyond learning for a couple years from a management team that has largely been a failure. If PL stays, this means little besides a Oilers type reshuffling of job titles while keeping the same group largely together. If PL goes, I sure hope Sakic brings in experienced, outside help in terms of a GM and support staff and doesn't just lean on Billington and Sherman.

They're already key players in our management team. Do you think we have a hell of a front office right now?

I think your faith in Sakic being effective as team president simply because he was an elite player is somewhat naive. Maybe he'll do well, maybe he won't, but he surely isn't close to being among the most qualified candidates from the job if this organization was willing to operate in a less nepotistic way.

This image on MHH is exactly the same as the one we've seen of PL lately, exiting revolving doors with a suitcase. Coincidence?

Not sure yet what to make of this and the Elway-type role. If all that happens is that Sakic gets inserted in the org chart directly between Pierre Lacroix and Greg Sherman is there anything to get excited about? If there is more house cleaning does Sakic have the ability to take on the role Elway did with the Broncos?

To complete the Broncos/Elway analogy:

Does Lacroix stay, leave or become to the Avs what Joe Ellis is to the Broncos (does anyone even know what Ellis does)?

Does Sherman stay on in his current role, in a diminished Xanders role or get pushed out completely like Xanders ultimately did with the Broncos?

If this turns out to be true it's funny how someone other than Dater breaks it.

He will be on a plane, slept in, or out of cell service.

I'm usually not a fan of doing the route of nostalgia and brining in former good players and just assume they will be good in management as well.

But I really want major changes in front office and is just glad it happens.

Wouldn't be surprising, Dater rarely breaks Avs news. He'll probably say he was on a plane and wasn't able to tweet it.

The clowns at Sportsnet breaking it before TSN would be pretty funny.

I hope it's not just taking over from Eric Lacroix. No one really knows just what it is that he did.

replacing Lacroix is good.

replacing Lacroix with someone inside the organization is bad.

With PL having lasted so long without actually giving up power after stepping down as GM this all kinda reminds me of that SNL gag with Chevy Chase announcing, "This just in...Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead."
