I don't think Whitney would even accept Captaincy of the team

Time and time in interviews late in the season he's said that the young guys have to step up and lead & motivate the team.

I think he's fine helping out the team and teaching the young guys but he'll sit back and let one of the young guns step up to the plate.

Thinking about it (and sticking with my theme), Whitney strikes me as that hard-nosed career first sergeant. The type that'll kick you down but pick you back up and lead you over the side. He'll lead but no way will he put on the bars, that's for those young kids and not grizzled old guys like him.

I think I need to go watch some old war movies now...

Yep. He said it's not his team to lead. Can't see him accepting it.

The problem is he is right, its not his team to lead, but it is also nobody else's team to lead.

There's 17 other guys in the dressing room. I'm sure Whitney isn't the only guy on the team that provides leadership.

Character guys like Robidas could warrant the C, but many point to his expiring contract and age.

Jamie Benn has the reigns for the most part but many compare him to Modano and say he's just not cut to lead.

Someone will step up from the group. It's definitely not a quiet room by any means. There's a leader in the mix.

That's why I see him with an A but not a C.

Right now the Stars need someone that has the can lead the charge. It doesn't matter if they're physical or not, it's all about that leadership aura and getting the guys behind him.

Basically....they need a Captain Winters dammit (yeah that's right...Band of Brothers reference).
You make it sound like he's Radar, a clipboard holder.

We've had discussions about this topic over the years and I've got to be honest, there are a lot of different kinds of captains in the league, and successful ones at that.

Looking over a list of all captains and a few who don't hold up to the archetype some of you are setting out as the end all be all of machismo:

Brian Gionta
Bryce Salvador
Mark Streit
Mikko Koivu
Henrik Sedin

My gut says they will take a year without a captain until someone takes the dangling carrot. Before this season I would have thought Benn was definitely in line but I'm re-thinking that. It's definitely too soon to give to Dillon. Eakin wouldn't be a bad choice, just not now.

Finally, we really aren't in a position to comment on how guys are in the locker room. We get to see how they are in games and sometimes at practice, but we don't know the "leader" type things they do off the ice. I seem to recall Eriksson being one of those guys who made sure to include younger guys in family meals and stuff (though that may have just been the Swedish players, can't remember).

Oh and one more thing, I seem to recall Winters being more of a reluctant hero/leader type rather than the kind who get spit out of West Point with a raging hard-on for battle and glory.

Hey man. Radar was awesome.

I also don't think a leader needs to spit fire and bash heads together. They need to know how to motivate and push them when needed and when not to push so far that they make mistakes.
