From looking who is on the market this summer for D toughness. All I see is:
Fistric
Hannan
Eminger
Aucoin
Regehr

There are a few more, but I don't like the others available.

I say the 2 major needs for Montreal are as follows:
-Left D-man to pair with Subban.
-Top 6 right winger with size and scoring ability.

These are not the type of guys you can really sign in free agency.

Forwards:
Max Pacioretty - Lars Eller - XXX
Rene Bourque - Alex Galchenyuk - Brendan Gallagher
XXX - XXX - Brian Gionta
Brandon Prust - XXX - Ryan White
-Travis Moen

*Trade assets: Tomas Plekanec and David Desharnais

Defensemen:
XXX - PK Subban
Josh Gorges - Raphael Diaz
Alexie Emelin - Jarred Tinordi
-Francis Bouillon

*Trade assets: Andrei Markov

I would love Alexander Edler and Chris Stewart to be targets. I dont know how it would be possible, but I hope. A center also has to be coming back to trade both Plek and DD. A 3rd liner with decent offensive and defensive ability.

I wouldnt touch Pac, Eller, Gally, Chucky, Tinordi or Beaulieu. Kristo or Collberg can b an interesting piece as well as Morgan Ellis.

What would you guys be willing to add to Pleks either player or money wise for Stewart?

You're in a camp alone where you're suggesting trading both Plekanec and Desharnais. That gets rid of our center depth.

I'd do a trade straight across. Brings something both team needs. Sets up a situation that would likely make DD a capable #1C again. Is Stewart capable defensively? If he's valued more than that I'd add one of Ellis/Pateryn/Thrower or one of our 2nds.

If it's for a 6-7 d-man, you can look in the ahl too. Some tough D-man are ready to make the jump in a limited role

And the bolted guys aren't tough, Hannan is old, Regehr and Fistric are ok I guess......

I never suggested a trade. I meant the 2 main targets should be Stewart and Edler but why cant we ask for another centre? Or look for one in free agency? Maybe bring up Leblanc, Dumont...? There are options out there.

You have to give to get.

And you wouldnt do Plek, DD and Markov for Stewart and Edler? Just because of the centre depth?

With my previous comment, I'm thinking that it could be one of Eller, Plekanec or... even Subban. Just a gut feeling, but Bergevin might just attempt something big which will not be unanimous.

Stewart isn't great defensively, but he isn't a big liability either. On a more wide open offensive team I think he would thrive. Montreal suits him way more than we do. I could see his hot streaks being more prevalent with you guys.

That is almost 5 million in cap space. Get rid of both.
So how many goals does cap space score and how many games does it win you?

We would have to get some UNREAL pieces coming back to even think about moving Subban.

We tried playing Markov as a top-4 Defenceman this year, it got a little rough towards the end. I don't think this team can compete, with or without a little more size.
Both Gionta and Emelin should be back by the start of next year based on the information that's come out.

Markov I could see him being better next year, at least in terms of defense and pinches. His defensive play was much better after he was put with Markov, though he played much safer.

Ryder if he walks then I'm pretty sure MB will spend hs cap space(or part of it) on another top 9 player, so we may have to replace some of his offense but probably not all.

Would Plekanec + MTL 2nd/B-prospect be enough?

It doesn't solve our problem. Our issue is gritty forwards and tough defensemen. You don't need to trade Pleks and Markov. Based on your lineup:

Pacioretty-Plekanec-Bourque
Galchenyuk-Eller-Gallagher
X-Halpern-Gionta
Moen-White-Prust

Bourque is the top 6 with grit and scoring.
Halpern gives us a shut down center. He was awesome for us in the playoffs. He deserves a shot at third line center.
We need to bring in someone like Clowe or Stewart for that third line role. I want our third line to be our shut down line but also consist of players who can take a top 6 shift in case of injuries or poor play.

Our main problem is on D. In the playoffs you need two puck moving defensemen and four big bodies that consist of guys who can hit, clear the front of the net and make a good first pass once in a while.

You keep Subban and Markov (until Beaulieu is ready).
We already have Tinordi and Emelin.
We need two more.
The other two are generally 5-6 defensemen.

That gives us Diaz, Desharnais and I'd trade Leblanc too.

Regehr and Scuderi are two guys who would change the face of this team on defense.

Eminger and Aucoin don't really fight, but they can hit and bring that tough presence on the ice. And at least they push the guys out of the crease unlike some D we got right now, who just leave them there. Also Hannan does fight and hit, hey these 3 guys are big bodies, and thats what we need on D.

If you don't like them, what do you think of Sarich and Souray?

Fair value? Is Philly actually rebuilding or still trying to win now? Too out of left field?

Couturier and Eller can log the defensive minutes as well as grow with the core, Coburn and Grossman add defence and size to our top-4 D. Plekanec is an upgrade on Schenn and Couturier and the perfect #2C behind Giroux, Diaz fills their PMD needs at a good cap hit and heading into his prime years.

I think Montreal needs to add another young player. Ideas?
That doesn't make sense for either team. Phillie is getting a big upgrade up front but they have cap issues. We gain cap space but a big downgrade offensively, plus we already have a guy that will be a better version of Couturier in Eller(faster and probably more offense).

This is getting ridiculous, Bergevin has a plan. He's not going to ruin it by making a stupid deal.

We'll find out Monday! Hopefully the press conference will give us an idea for his plans next year and the direction he's bringing the team in.

I don't know where to put this but the post-mortem interviews are live on RDS right now.
