Oh wow, didn't know Spezza was skating again. It'll be huge for Ottawa if they can get him back this series

Bylsma is OK. Nothing that great — I think he has trouble keeping his teams composed, although strategically, he's pretty solid.

I actually think Tortorella would be the perfect coach for Pittsburgh — he's arrogant, condescending, and he'd whip them into shape. No more taking games off and relying strictly on skill.

Because the Rangers never take games off.

Is it just me or are these advanced stats gurus always saying "based on this they are the best team yada yada yada (insert excuse as to why they lost)"?

If the stats are such a great tool at determining things why is the on ice result often different.

Reminds me of Trouble With the Curve. "Anybody who uses computers doesn't know a damn thing about this game."

Every team takes the occasional game off, but I can honestly say when it comes to the 10-11/11-12 teams, I never question the overall effort.

This year, yeah, I definitely question the overall effort Tortorella's effect wears out after awhile. For Pittsburgh, though, him coming in will be a different experience. I think they'd be a juggernaut the first two seasons or so, extending to the playoffs.

Say what you want about our offensive game under Tortorella, but if he was able to get the Penguins GAA dow closer to 2 in the playoffs, they'd be unstoppable with the offensive weapons they have.

I'm not seeing how any of this is shortsighted either. The playoffs are do or die. It's the time period where the draft, cap and all that mumbo jumbo is tossed out the window.

But I'm sure that the Islanders will take solace in knowing they were somehow the better team from their couches at home.

Quiet a lot of Pittsburgh fans want Bylsma fired.

With the team he has available, he should be doing so much more. The guy took over in 2009, around the same time Torts took over in New York. For the rest of the regular season (25 games), they put up a sensational record, and Malkin single handedly won them the cup. Cool. I guess he did do something that year, although that's pretty standard with a new coach coming in.

Since then?
They've won the Atlantic the same number of times as everyone else (except the Islanders)
Made it to the second round, now twice, and never past that (which I suspect will stay so this year)

I don't ****ing care that Crosby was hurt, because they're still got the guy with more Art Ross trophies than him.

The whole franchise is pathetic, and is only competitive because they had the two best players in the world given to them.
They drafted Jordan Staal 2nd overall, right before Toews, Backstrom and Kessel. I'm assuming this was based on the fact that his brother won the cup that year.
They drafted Marc Andre Fleury 1st overall. Not just in the first round. First ****ing overall.

They're no different than the Oilers or any other **** franchises, aside from having the league gift wrap them Crosby and Malkin.

Sorry for the rant, but these ***** are just so easy to despise.

I wish the Rangers could tank a few yrs a win a cup. Clearly throwing the bank at FAs hasn't worked.

And where does tanking take you?

Nowhere, unless you get lucky like the Pens.

Exactly, the Rangers need to pick their spots when a generational talent is available. Then tank that year.

In reference to Nils' post, can you imagine if they took Toews?

He'd be their 3rd line Center. I actually lol'd at that.

I'd be embarrassed if Rangers ever tanked. You play to win. Detroit didn't need to tank. You draft well and you make smart decisions with free agents. As of now we are only doing 1 of those things right.

It's starting again.

Apparently half the teams let are unstoppable.

Blackhaws, Kings, Sharks, Penguins and Senators are call unstoppable.

Too bad at least 2, maybe 3 of them will be stopped within the next 2 weeks

Can someone please tell me why that after one playoff series in so many years, the Islanders earned "respect". It's ridiculous. If they make the playoffs again next year, then alright, they get my respect. But as of now I'm 50/50 on the "respect" part.

Game 7 tonight in Anaheim?

Picked Detroit in 7 for that series. Prove me right, Pavel Datsyuk.

Because they performed more than admirably against a far superior team that was expected to sweep them.

They never really did anything with all of the high draft picks until they got Yzerman which coincided with Mike Illitch taking over the team.

Then in 1987 with a bunch of misfits they made it to the Conference Finals, then they had a few up and down years but began building a program. They also were extremely lucky with Lindstrom as in those days European players weren't as known as they were today. Ditt0 with Fedorov. Case in point was when the Rangers drafted Kovalev in 91, you could hear crickets, no one had any clue who he was.

They're going to be competitive, always will be, but how good is the question, and can these kids like Tatar, Nyquvist, Jankorik, Ferraro, etc. become top six talent?

Wins are just a stat, just like Corsi/Fenwick/PDO are stats. However win totals are ultimately the judgement of talent, which can be quite skewed when taken in with context. I feel that the advanced stats tell a better story than win/loss totals over the long haul. Corsi/Fenwick correlate better with future winning than win-loss totals and GF/GA totals.

Puck possession hockey is very vital to winning hockey games and goaltenders are sorta left out of the equation in the stats. This is why we refer to the norm at .909 sv percentage and evaluate from there. If you want to even further go onto it, ES vs. PK sv. percentage will tell better of goalie's performance.

The Penguins had a very high PDO number, which is largely unsustainable. Here is a good article: http://nhlnumbers.com/2013/4/1/pdo-n...l-team-april-1

Quote:
Basically, if a team is playing with a PDO number way higher than 1.000, they're producing above their expected output. If a team is playing with a PDO number below 1.000, they're producing below their expected output. Over the course of a long season, the number will generally correct itself.
Isles PDO had 8 players over 1000 PDO at ES.

Pens PDO had a staggering 17 players over 1000 PDO at ES.

This tells that the Isles were for the most part, very unlucky throughout the series.
