12.00, 12.000000000000000000 and 12 are the same thing.

But it doesn't matter, NHL.com lists it as 12.0. You might say you can calculate 16/133 as 12.03% but I could probably go back and count more shots to credit to Eberle.

16/133 = 12.03, not sure wth you're needing to add additional zero's to get to the same answer? Also what in the blue hell are you talking about in the bolded? Unless you are one of the shot statisticians working for the NHL your opinion on that matter means two things, sweet bleep all and nothing.

I would hope that you could say that you could calculate that as well unless of course you don't know how to use math properly? It seems to me like you are grasping at straws and those straws are on fire.

That's preposterous!! 12 cannot equal 12.000000 it would throw off the entire calculation. Hell the next thing you'll tell me is that 12/1 is the same as 12.

Hmm, you present an interesting dilemma. Each of you seemingly has a legitmate claim to the avatar, and yet the avatar can have only one rightful owner. Quite the conundrum.

I have made a decision. We will cut the avatar down the middle and give half to each of you!

Here's a simple calculation for you, let's say your at a hotel in Banff and want to go down to the hot tub. You have 100 beer and have 12 friends who each want one beer. Due to restrictions at the hot tub your beer must be in cups so everyone fills a cup with the 12 beer. But one of your buddies has an extra big cup and didnt quite fill the cup. He decides to open another beer and fill his cup then puts the rest of the beer back in the fridge for later. What percentage of the beers have been opened? Is it over 12%? Case closed

This is quite possibly the most bizarre debate I've ever seen on HF Oil, and I've been here a long time, and seen some pretty damn strange debates.

I would argue that 0.03 is "anything".

If he said "higher than 12", I could be on jadeddog's side, but the fact that he said "anything higher than 12%" kinda looks like he is accepting miniscule amounts above 12. Just a casual observation.

Sure, if you go to a 4th decimal point, you get a number that's greater than 12%, but nobody, anywhere, uses that many decimal places.

Just to give a little context to what you guys are arguing about, a guy would have to take FIVE THOUSAND shots before .02% would equate to a goal. Jaromir Jagr and Teemu Selanne (the league's two longest serving active players) have both been goal scorers in the NHL since the early 90's and neither of them have taken 5,000 shots in their CAREERS.

I don't have a horse in this race, and I don't really care who wins, but if I were judge and jury on this, I'd be ruling in favour of the guy who said Eberle didn't surpass 12% this year.
The bet was simple. Would Eberle's shooting % be better than 12%. He took 133 shots and scored 16 goals. So the question comes down to:

Is 16/133 > 12/100?

That is the bet, plain and simple with no ambiguity. The answer of course is yes,

16/133 > 12/100

I honestly do not see any way someone can dispute this. The fact that the NHL.com website chooses to display only 1 decimal point is absolutely beside the point. These are exact numbers not estimates where the number os decimal places recorded reflects the accuracy of the measurement. As such using a rounding argument is completely disingenuous.

These kind of wagers should be for fun but if you are not prepared to honour the bet don't participate. JDD is a "numbers guy". He knows he lost, or at least he should.

jaded, that's all I got for you buddy.

I think I can find you a few numbers between 12 and 13 that 16/133 might be greater than.

Yeah I'm not sure why this is in debate. It doesn't matter what the NHL reports or the Oilers report, 16/133 is a 12.03% shooting percentage which is greater than 12. Even my Grade 8 students know that.

Furthermore to try to use this technicality to get out of something as harmless as an Avatar bet is being a poor sport.

16 goals out of 133 shots = 12.03 shooting %. Apparently there's a new form of math out there that started with "Gagner is a 50 point scorer" even though he's never actually hit that number (he should next season and THEN he can be called one). 49 = 50 and 12.00 = 12.03?
wow i'm late to the party to defend my honor on this one! lol.... i've been crazy busy with school and haven't checked the boards in a few days and i'm getting slagged!!

i still say that the official NHL stats show 12% even, so nobody won, because we didn't clarify what would happen at exactly 12% now to read all these posts about this bet.... oh the things oilers fans do to amuse themselves while the playoffs are on, haha

so reading all these posts about something this minute has been pretty awesome... i almost want to just let it roll and see how far we can take it, open a poll thread and *really* get down to some ridiculous arguments! but sadly, for me anyhow, i think that a bunch of people have shown that BBO has indeed won on a technicality ... i still claim the moral win, as my underlying point was that eberle's shooting % last year wasn't sustainable, and that has clearly been proven true

at any point, i concede and am at the mercy of BBO for one month

i've been in 14 hour school days for the past week, so an avatar bet on an internet board was the least of my worries, i had completely forgotten about the PMs we exchanged about this (friendly arguing over who won) until i saw this thread about 10 minutes ago

yeah, and didn't see this thread, nor checked my inbox... like i said, i've been *exceptionally* busy, dumb things like avatar bets tend to get pushed aside when you have crazy work and crazy school... once the thread reminded me about it i conceded that BBO won the bet... what exactly do you expect?
