It's been reported in Russian media that Varlamov is locked in for Sochi; Bryz is auditioning for another spot.

Bryz has a spot, right here, and I think he will understand.

Not a good sign for the Olympics for Russian goaltending:

Bryz: 4 goals on 20 shots
Varlamov: 4 goals on 11 shots

Surprisingly, Russian fans (on Sports.ru) do not blame goalies. The blame falls mostly on coach and defense

The 5th goal at least by Varly was horrible.

I didn't see any of the other goals other than the 5th and 6th by the US. So I'm going by what I saw of this morning before I left for work.

Voracek looked almost like the Voranotbeast from the beginning of this season at the WC.. It seems like he puts himself under pressure way too easily and doesn't play good at all when he tries too hard.. Oh well

I don't see how you can look at...

1) His play against Pittsburgh in the playoffs
2) His play to close out this season
3) His play in the World Championships
4) His domination of and consistent development in the AHL

and still claim that people are getting "too excited" over Gus. I think he can step in and be a top 4 defenseman next year; at the very least a replacement for Carle.

I do however think we can find a better PMD with our 11th via trade to bump him down to 5/6 with Grossmann.

Gustafsson is playing well. He may never be Timonen, but I think he can be a top 4 PMD in this league. People counting him out are doing so just out of spite.

I would like to see:

Timonen, Ristolainen
Gustaffson, Schenn
Coburn, Grossmann

Ugh.

Timonen - Schenn
Ristolainen/Nurse - Coburn
Gustafsson - Grossmann

That looks better. Our top minute-eating defenseman (Coburn) is not being relegated to the third pair with Grossmann.

Unlike Ristolainen who has been playing in a men's league, I don't think Nurse will be ready to play in the NHL this upcoming season. I guess Coburn doesn't belong on the third pair, but Ristolainen would be better off pared with his fellow Finn rather than Mr. Inconsistent.

I wouldn't expect a defender from this draft to step in right away and play top 4 minutes. Hell I wouldn't even expect Homer & Co. to draft a defender.

I wouldn't expect them to if they were at draft positions 2 thru 9. But at 11 a defender is much more likely to be BPA.

That's according public scouting lists. I'm sure the Flyers board along with other teams look way different than them. They might take a defender, they might not. It all hinges on who's available at the pick and who's on their board.

That's how I'd sort the defenseman, too, except that I'd rather not start any defenseman drafted this year. Is that self-contradictory?

Timonen - Schenn works well, and the two G's as the bottom pairing would be good for continuing with Gustafsson's development. I'm torn on how to best pair up Coburn: as inconsistent as he is, I can see him doing well with a primary puck-mover / offensive type Dman (like Ristolainen) or another well-rounded (at his best) defender like Nurse. However, slotting either of them as top 4 in the coming season is risky (at best).

As much of an advocate of dealing Meszaros for cap relief, if he is still a Flyer he would be the least risky option to pair with Coburn, at least to start the season and get the team through the 4-6 games before he comes down with an injury.

The Canada/Sweden game is about to air live on NBCSN in the US for those interested.

Edler gets tossed for a dirty knee on knee hit to Eric Staal. Staal's probably done for the tournament going by his reaction.

Giroux takes a bad cross checking penalty in the offensive zone and Sweden takes the 2-1 lead late in the third.

LOL Girouxs next shift he ties it up. Wasn't happy with the penalty.
