There is no more re-entry waivers when your called up. They took the rule out after a couple of month into the season last year. A bit after we lost Hainsey.

Damn you bad timing. Hainsey would be useful right about now.

As for Ferland, does anybody know whether he is on waivers right now?
If sent down he must be, cause he has to clear waivers to play in Hamilton.

huh? Not according to my knowledge.

That rule still applies. They only increased the $ number for minor leaguers.

The only time a team pays half of a salary when someone is claimed on re-entry waivers by some other twam is when the player is on a one way contract. Ferland is on a two way contract. If he is claimed, the other team pays his full NHL salary.

Makes a bit more sense now that RDS put up a more complete list.

A bit surprised Ferland is on there already. Given he has to clear waivers I thought they would keep him until the end, at least just for form. But I guess you guys are hearing conflicting reports so I'll just wait and see whether it's true.

Baines must have been forgotten from the lists. No other logical explanation.

As for the defense, I'm not too surprised there are still 3 guys in the running. Seems like Jancevski is marginally leading the group but I don't think he or any of them have really stood out. O'Byrne probably bought some additional look with the grit he showed yesterday - it's the one thing that sets him apart from the others and what the Habs need to fill some of the void left from Bouillon's absence and what Streit can't bring.

I was about to ask the question about Ferland... and also Danis. I tought both had to clear waivers to go back to Hamilton.

Anyway, I don't think it will take a long time before we see Ferland back with the club. Downey won't play forever with the Habs.

The good news is: this season, Hamilton will have a great team, specially if Kostitsyn is sent down.

RDS now reports that 7 players has been cut.

Ferland, Locke, Chipchura, Groulx, Lapierre and Yann Danis has been sent down to Hamilton.

Carey Price was returned to juniors.

No word on Ajay Baines

Does Danis has to clear waivers first this year? Does Philadelphia might pick him up to backup Esche while Niitty is injured...could be a possibility...

You're right. I forgot that Ferland was on a 2-way contract. That's good news for him in terms of getting called up, but bad news for his bank account.

Anybody know how the waiver draft picking order works prior to the season starting? I understand that it is in reverse order of the standings during the season, but what about pre-season? Is it based on last year's standings?

Yes, up to November 1rst its last years standings, then it becomes the season strandings.

So St-Louis get first crack, Pitts,Chi, Wash, Boston, Columbus, etc...

So, if I count we are left with these

Forwards (16)

Higgins
Ryder
Koivu
Samsonov
Kovalev
Ribeiro
Plekanec
Perezhogin
Johnson
Bonk
Begin
Murray
Downey
Kostitsyn
Latendresse
Grabovsky (injured)

Defenseman (11)
A.Markov
S.Souray
M.Komisarek
M.Streit
C.Rivet
M.Dandenault
D.Jancevski
R.O'Byrne
A.Benoit
F.Bouillon (injured)
JP Cote (injured)

Goalies (2)
Huet
Aebischer

So basically, with Grabovsky who will be sent down when healthy that leaves 15 forwards for 14 spots. One guy to cut. Downey, Murray, Tender or Kostitsyn? My bet is that Kostitsyn will be cut since they like Downey and the grit of Murray. That means Latendresse would make the team.

As for D-man, Cote and Bouillon are injured so O'Byrne, Jancevski and Benoit are up for the 7th spot. My bet is that Jancevski will stay. So there is my final roster and lines

Higgins-Koivu-Ryder
Samsonov-Plekanec-Kovalev
Latendresse-Ribeiro-Johnson
Begin-Bonk-Perezhogin

Xtra: Murray, Downey

Markov-Rivet
Souray-Dandenault
Streit-Komisarek
Xtra: Jancevski

Huet-Aebischer

Pretty good analysis Andy. I'm not going to comment on our final lines, but as far as the regular roster goes I tend to agree with you.

im not suprised ferland was sent down and now exposed to waivers. suck if we lose him but will there be another player on waivers as good as ferland in the next 2 weeks?

the answer is yes. so thats why he was sent down . if we lose him we can replace him . the gamble you have to take . i wana keep him hopeful he makes it thru waivers . but he can be replaced .

I like Ferland and all but if he got claimed by a team it wouldn't really be that big of a loss.

We also have Lapierre. I don't know if the future roster could hold both of them with all the pluggers we have on the team and the up and commers. Pleks, Chips, Murray, Begin, Laps and Ferland would be a nice young bottom 6. The problem is we have Perez, Higgs, Kost, Ryder, Lats, Koivu and Kovalev for the next few years along with other regualrs and prospects. Some may need to take space on the bottom 6 in the future if no trades are made. Not that I want to see him go, I think we may need a trade or two if he's to fit in the future.

TSN says that 8 were cut, including Baines. Guess maybe RDS did forget.

If Latendresse stays that might mean that we could get by with either Murray or Downey (I say Murray). However, I can see Bob pulling a trade in the next 10 days that will clarify the picture. Likely a forward for defenseman swap.

Good analysis, but personally I would have a hard time going with Downey instead of Kostitsyn. Who would you pick in a fantasy league? Kost hands down for me. Sure Downey brings some intangables to the game (like one punch KO's and hustle) but "the new NHL" needs speed and skill. I think our best chance to win comes with Kost instead of Downey.

We could potentially have 3rd line that scores like a second line and a 4th line that scores like a 3rd line.

MY LINEUP:

Higgins-Koivu-Ryder (known to dominate)
Samsonov-Ribeiro-Kovalev (May have to split up Kovalev and Sammy)
Perezhogin/Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Johnson (Kinda soft, but could work)
Latendresse-Bonk-Begin (Talk about grit and some offensive punch)
Extras: Murray, Perezhogin/Kostitsyn

Perhaps during the season you switch Ryder and Kovalev and maybe put Latendresse on the third line.

I am realising as I am writing this that we have a problem with too much skill. I keep wanting to demote guys to the third of fourth line but then realise that they are better than that. With the exception of Bonk and Begin, I think almost any of our guys could see time on the first or second line and none of us would think Carbs is crazy. And who knows, maybe Bonk will be better offensively with Lats and then it wouldn't be nuts to see him crack the top 2 lines.

Oct 6th isn't too far away fellas, I am getting aroused just thinking about it.

RDS updated their article with quotes from the cut players, who supposedly all had individual meetings with Carbonneau before being sent down.

Ferland said: "I'm disappointed. I performed well and thought I had a chance to stay. Unfortunately, there was only one spot available, and many players vying for it. I have nothing to feel bad about my performance and I leave for Hamilton with a positive attitude. I can play in the NHL, and the organization knows it. The season is long and there will be call-ups."

To me that doesn't sound like a player being placed on waivers.
