Tampa may trade the pick but they're not moving down any further than 5th.

And he is already an established top 4 Dman in this league, some would say top pairing Dman, and is only getting better and nastier by the game. You've acknowledged yourself how good he is, even right after coming back from a major injury that put him out all year. Yet you are saying he is worth less than Mac or Drouin, who are of course blue chip prospects, but are not a sure thing, and have yet to play a shift in the NHL. They could bust as easily as they could become all-stars.
Why would you trade for the 3rd overall then? None of your prospects are at the level as the top 3 in this draft. In tampa's perceptive why would they downgrade their 3rd overall pick for lesser unproven pieces?

We would trade for it because, should Drouin be available there, he fills our one big organizational need. Last year at this time, we couldn't even consider a deal like this, since we didn't have Methot, who is pretty admirably filling the Cowen type role. Could Drouin be better than Cowen? (hard to compare a forward to a Dman though) Sure. But he could also be exactly the same or worse. If we traded someone like Cowen straight up for Cowen, we are trading a young, proven commodity who is still on an ELC for something that may or may not be as good or better than him. All the risk in such a deal falls on Ottawa, and that has to be taken into account.

You seem to be greatly underrating some of our players/prospects, especially Cowen, who too was ranked 3rd in his draft, and only fell due to an injury. But he is sure playing like a 3rd overall pick.

If we get a top 4 or 5 pick - to target Barkov/Monahan, not Mackinnon/Drouin - Spezza will be going the other way. Simple as that. Also Cowen discussions are silly. Probably worth near a 3rd (I value him WAY higher than Zibanejad) but he's not worth Jones/Mackinnon/Drouin and Ottawa would likely only trade him if they were guaranteed their #2 player anyways.

Its not.

There is an extreme overrating of Sens players going on in here.

Sens wouldn't do that deal because they are moving two of there own key pieces to the team, but that's the type of package it would take to get one of Mackinnon/Drouin.

If you want to move up the third overall pick from such a low position, then you have to pay. The risk does not only fall to Ottawa. There is a huge risk to TBL, as they are trading a potential top line winger for pieces that might not equal in value in the future.

Ottawa takes a risk as they might take a bust, but Tampa takes a risk in trading away a franchise player who is exceptional. It is more likely for the top 3 pick to be a franchise player than a bust, so TBL is in fact taking a larger risk. In Drouin, they might get a MSL replacement, and in Mackinnon, they might get a player who could push Stamkos to the wing.

It is absolutely ridiculous to say that only Ottawa is taking a risk. TBL needs to receive enough assets to be confident in letting that possible exceptional talent go to another team. Otherwise, the pick won't be moved. It's that simple.

Sens don't need that pick or a top line winger. They have a queue of potential top 6 forwards who are 1-3 years away and have cap space to spend big on a FA if the need arises and no expected bug paydays for RFAs. BM didn't spend 2 1/2 years making smart hockey trades so that he could blow his wad on the #3 pick.

Yeah - it'd be great to have that pick, but I'd rather be in the playoffs next season when Cowen, Zibanejad and Silfverberg are all 1 year better for the experience.

But seriously, as much as I like Honey Badger, and he has been good for us, I would do #17 + Conacher for 3rd overall.
Of course you would.

Zbad/Silfverberg + #17 +
