No to Penner and no to Torris. That shipped sailed a few years ago.

It would be interesting Hall and Clutterbuck. I like Peverly

I'd like to see a pest on the team that can play.

Maybe get Cooke from the pens

Boyd Gordon and Colby Armstrong are my favorites from the free agent role player scrap heap. Ryan Clowe is my pick for a top 6 guy to target, and should come at a much more reasonable number than guys like Iggy/Morrow/Clarkson/Horton. Grab those 3 without having to give up assets and we're looking good up front.

Hall-Gagner-Hemsky
Clowe-RNH-Eberle
Paajarvi-Horc-Yakupov
Smyth-Gordon-Armstrong
(assuming Jones, Petrell, Belanger, and Eager all find their way out of town)

Whichever C we get at #7 comes in to fill in for RNH for up to 9 games to start the season while gets back up to speed post-surgery.

edit: Also, LOVE the suggestion of Thomas Greiss. Perfect candidate for the 1B role behind Dubnyk.

He's got the same issue as Torres. They can't really play on the edge any more because of suspensions.

What about Kostka?

I agree. I'm just not sure Cooke can be that guy. Maybe take a flyer on Anthony Stewart?

No reason we couldn't bring those guys back. I never wanted Penner to go in the first place. If Penner is on the 3rd line, we're golden. Just can't expect the guy to be a 1st line player.

My personal 3rd tier player interest list:

Centers: Chipchura, Klinkhammer, Steckel, Cullen? (not sure that you could get him at $2 million)

RW: McGrattan, Clutterbuck (RFA), Cracknell, Kobasew (if Jones walks)

LW: Bickell (might end up being more than $2 million), Nystrom, Torres, Drew Miller, Hendricks, Bordeleau

D: Lydman (probably cost a little more), O'Byrne, Douglas Murray (if we don't retain Fistric)

G: Khudobin, Greiss, Lawson

Would love to get Clutterbuck. I think Paajarvi/Horcoff/Clutterbuck would be a great shutdown 3rd line.

I don't want any part of Horcoff and his contract, if MacT doesn't buy him out that will be a big mistake on his part.

Would be a good off-season if we managed to do that.

Hell, keep them all on the same line.

I like David Steckel as a 4th line guy. He just turned 31. He's 6'6", 215 lbs so he's a big body and isn't too bad in the face off circle.....and he was only making $1.1M this season. We could get him for $1.5M maybe. I'm not looking for points out of him, just grit and some faceoff wins.

Viktor Stalberg in a 3rd line role wouldn't be too bad either imo. As a RW, you'd likely have to ship out Hemsky to even think of signing this guy but Hemsky's days as an Oiler should be over.

How about if we keep all former Oilers out of this discussion. They all moved on for one reason or another (not good enough, no compete level, disagreements with management). There isn't a single former Oiler that I can think of who is currently active that I want back on this roster.

Not much grit in Steckel`s game. He`s big, but not overly gritty or phyiscal. I`d be worried that he would be a larger version of Belanger.

Armstrong is done as an NHLer. No thanks.

Well he's bigger, younger and better on faceoffs than Belanger. If he's not overly gritty or physical, at least the potential for that is there. Belanger gives us nothing. Honestly I don't know what his hits were this season but if anything he's an inexpensive upgrade with size.

Matt Cullen is a guy I want badly. The guy is getting up there in age, but he knows how to win, and is a great two way player and could be an excellent 4th line center.

Another option is Max Lapierre. We need a pest like him.

Chuck Kobasew is a good option at 4th line, I wouldn't mind having him at all. Another former Flame, Eric Nystrom could be a decent 4th line option.

I also liked Rob Klinkhammer in the few viewings I have had of him. Not sure if I just watched a couple of good games though.

I wouldn't mind keeping Jonesy either. He has always played hard for us, and had an off year because of that eye injury, but I don't think he is part of the problem.

And hopefully we can bring in Mark Streit for the blueline. He's the only UFA d-man worth signing though.

Bottom six

Hall - Gagner - Eberle
Pajaarvi - RNH - Yakupov
Kobasew - Horcoff- Jones
Smyth - Cullen - Lapierre/Nystrom/Klinkhammer

Smid-Petry
J. Schultz - Streit
Klefbom-N. Schultz
Fistric

Dubnyk
Khudobin

That is true, I just think there are better options out there. Matt Cullen. Rob Klinkhammer. Maxim Lapierre.

Keep in mind that this is only using free agent signings. I fully expect Hemsky to be dealt for a depth forward or two.
