i know its bad that Richards blocked a goal from Zuccarello last game but what if it gets worse with his rapid decline something like this was to happen imagine if he deflects the puck into his own net which is the GW for the Capitals?? i can only imagine how the fans would feel about him especially since we all want him gone already. id love if Torts would scratch Richards... but doubtful

Man it's gone long if we're scared of a player not only preventing our goals, but scoring on Lundqvist too.

Not to be a downer when we just won, but I want Richard scratched the remainder of the playoffs. He is ****ing useless. TERRIBLE.

I think Torts has gone a long way in sending a message to Richards by playing him on the 4th line and by playing him 11:12 in game 7, and just 9:34 in game 6.

He had an amazing block with his stick in game 7. Maybe Hank wouldve saved the shot anyways.... And Richard is good on the faceoffs.

So he can be used as a fourth liner. A very expensive fourth liner

It would have been even less if the game wasn't a blow out. He got a lot of third period mop up/ "maybe this will help this guy gain confidence" time towards the end of the game.

Likely -- say, 75% certainty -- we buy him out this summer. If not, he's guaranteed to be gone in 2014.

I don't think Sather fully intended for Richards to be here for 9 years. The plan was clearly to spread out the money over a long contract, keep the cap hit as low as possible, have a 2-3 year window with (hopefully) an elite center, buy him out post-lockout.

If that wasn't the plan, it was always a back-up plan in Sather's mind with Richards entering his mid-30's. I'd almost feel bad for Beaver if he didn't make millions upon millions playing a game for a living.

I don't think he'll be bought out this year, but if he's this bad next season, then in 2014 he's gone for sure.

yeah he had a good block in game 7. But look back in the series and he has played awful defense. Basically every time the caps scored and he was on the ice, he was just scrambling around.

I'd say the likelihood of Richards being bought out this year is slim, if only because there is a dearth of elite free-agent forwards, and the amount we'd have to eat (full amount remaining, or approximately $36 million) becomes far more palatable next offseason (approximately $27 million), and that's also in conjunction when players who have enormously long "retirement" contracts figure to at least be rumored to be on the compliance buyout block, meaning there'd be significantly more talent available next offseason, just by virtue of the compliance buyouts.

That said, I wouldn't be shocked if he's bought out this offseason, I'd just find it incredibly unlikely.

FWIW, Kovalchuk has 11 years remaining on his contract, Ovechkin 8, Hossa 8, and Heatley's a UFA after next year.

Figure at least one complaince buyout in there, plus Heatley. That's where the Richards money should go.

At this point I don't care if he is here next year or not, the Rangers need for him to pick up his game and start to create some offense. Worrying about whether he will be here past this season does not matter right now. He has to play better

In order to get to that $27 million buyout number, we'd have to pay him $9M next season. You're paying him $36M in one way or another, are you not?

I say 2014. I think he get's one more season to prove he can still play up to his contract. Even than I'm not so sure he gets bought out. Sather might be able to deal him to a cap floor team.

Not going to happen. If he retires prematurely, we have to absorb the cap hit. He is 100% being bought out. Dude looks 75 years old on the ice.

Not really. Can't think of any names, but there must be 4th liners playing better than him right now.

I doubt very much Kovalchuk and especially Ovechkin get bought out. Ovechkin is still young and will be only 35 when his contract ends. I'd say his contract is perfect length as far as the Caps are concerned because if he became a UFA at 32-33, they'd have to throw another major contract at him, but by 35, they would be able to re-up him for something reasonable.

Kovalchuk's contract is enormous, but the Debs gave up so much youth for him and then got fined that to allow him to walk now would be just horrible for them. Considering that they missed the playoffs two of the last three seasons, even a single lucky run to the Finals won't make up for the fact that the team gave up a ton of youth to get him and would go back to being The Micky Mouse Club if they let him go.

Maybe if Lou is replaced, the new GM can admit to this mistake, but I doubt very much that Lou would.
