Really?

Plekanec is paid 4.225 M more than DD. Now, if you think the gap between them is really 4.225M, or that it should be BIGGER, then there's nothing I can do for you...

Desharnais could easily turn it around and turn into a regular threat again but his problem is that it'll take time from our high-potential future star OR our really, really good young centre. His problem is that he's going to monopolize Pacioretty's ice-time. His problem is that he's tiny and cannot step up his physical game at all.

It's just depressing to think about him actually - he's not a bad player, he just doesn't fit our needs or wants WHATSOEVER.

You can't use DD's current salary as a comparative. Figures post their bridge contracts only have a $1.5M differential per year. For that difference, would rather have Pleks.

Pleks is getting $5M per, until 2015-16.

DD will be making $3.5M per, until 2016-17.

Plekanec could get 5million from any team in the league, he is a very respectable 1b centre who is excellent defensively. DD is looking like a 3rd line centre who can't make his wingers better unless they are power forwards who create space for him.

While I certainly agree with the underlined, he certainly fit our needs for depth.

I mean, should DD be used at LW (which could and should be a possibility at some point, depending on Galchenyuk's form next season), he can STILL be used at Center, should somebody go down. The next player on the "offense" depth chart is ... yeah, Bournival? Dumont? Not exactly viable options... or simply options. Not to mention that our wingers tends to be seriously pass retards, with the exception of Galchenyuk... Who might not have for long at wing.

Why were we successful this season? Offensive depth, as far as the lineup is concerned. With the lack of superstars, we need that offensive depth. Getting more size/grit at the expense of offensive depth isn't exactly the way to go.

How many games DD played under a 3.5 contract?

Which is a good thing, cause I seriously suspect he'll be gone sooner or later.

How many games will DD play as the team's no. 1 centre during his 3.5 contract?

Hopefully as much as Tomas Plekanec will with his 5M contract starting from next season.

Besides, if you think that 3.5 is a fitting salary for a 1st Center who isn't on an ELC.

Neither DD and Plekanec should be 1st centers.

Targeting a player who has size and grit and who has some scoring ability, need not be mutually exclusive. The Habs have not been successful at or have not favored these types of players in past drafts, however, it's a lot easier to draft that type of player than to trade for one or add one through free agency.

The regular season has shown that there is enough offense on the team even if DD were replaced by a more physical player.

Still Plekanec is much more suited to take that 1st line center role until Galchenyuk is ready.

I agree, but that was ... kindof obvious, no?

Besides, that's what their salary (starting from next season) indicates.
