Exactly.

I want to see a shovel before I celebrate.

Just glad the deal is done.

Hopefully they can get the shovels in the ground soon

My lack of understanding of how the capital region board works makes this seem like theres no problem, but perhaps someone can elaborate.

Do the three regional boards that covers edmonton, calgary, and rural alberta get evenly split money every year that they distribute amongst themselves to do whatever they determine fit? Basically another set of MSI type funding?

I very rarely post in this thread because I do work for the City, but here's an e-mail that Simon (Farbrother) just sent to all City employees:

I am pleased to let you know that earlier today Council approved the final piece of funding for the downtown arena. This decision is a huge step forward for the project and our downtown. We anticipate that we will break ground early in 2014 with completion of the facility set for the summer of 2016.
As you know revitalization of the heart of our city is a priority for Edmonton and the arena and entertainment district is a key catalyst in that effort.

Once again I would like to thank all of the staff from across the City who have worked tirelessly to advance this project and help us build a better Edmonton.

We will likely see Staples (across the street) gone before the Baccarat.

Gross.

Edit:

EAD Development Partnership Tower D
Stantec - Dean Benvenuto
10330 – 101 Street NW
Site legally described as: Lot A, Block 1, Plan 8021480

This is a proposal by the Katz group to construct a new tower on the land currently home to Staples; it goes to the Edmonton design committee on June 4th, and it will be a pre-consultation presentation.

Quick! mark the date when staples closes for cheap office supplies and furniture!

I sure could use an actual rolling drawer cabin.

Will Edmonton have a new arena by 2016? Or is that too soon like Vikings new NFL stadium?

It's supposed to be finished by the summer of 2016.

Are they still calling it Rexall Place, or are they going to sell the naming rights to make some money back? Seems kind of pointless to pay yourself to name your building.

I look forward to coming up to Edmonton to check out a game, instead of being heckled in the Saddledome trying to cheer my team. I will be sure to visit the surrounding vicinity for food and drinks before the game.

I would love to see them go the old school route and say screw having some sponsor name tagged on the arena and give it a real name.

Yeah, but money trumps old-school coolness unfortunatly. If they are squabbling about money, there is an avenue.

Everything could be fast-tracked if they wanted to, except for the legal side. I'm not up to speed on the area so I'm not sure whats there now. Its just too bad that a whole construction season is already planned to be missed and its only mid-May.

I would love to see Enbridge, Suncor or ATB step up to the plate re: naming rights.

I bet someone on here could speed things up by about 4 months by paying some crackhead $100 to go burn the Baccarat and Greyhound station to the ground.

What else would $550 million buy?

A very good article that all local taxpayers should read.

Why didn't we just cover the whole amount for the Arena? We get that sweet deal of 1 month of revenue and we help out that friendly billionaire that didn't threaten to move the team or anything

A fantasy piece written by the worst offender of biased blogging on the Oilblogsphere is something every taxpayer should read?

They are off the road and into the ditch with the first suggestion that the city should just buy the team(because that ever made any sense ), and start on fire by the time they are half way through their fantasy take on the renovations of Rexall

As a tax payer, why would I want the city to own a hockey team? That's not the function of a city. Why would I want to spend close to as much to renovate a crummy facility like Rexall when I can own a nice new building and help revitalize the downtown? The article makes no sense.
