Your point is still valid about the small (if any) number of teams that fit in that Venn diagram of wanting him/his contract and him wanting them.
The problem is he has a no-movement and no reason to accept a trade. He can force the Flyers to buy him out, take about $3.35M, and probably sign a new contract for $3M a year.

Indontnsee Dallas buying out Cole. They just traded for him. Niewendyk isn't going to buy him out without even a full season

Isn't Connolly a UFA anyway?

I would say the Leafs buyout Liles and not Komisarek...they likely don't need the cap room for next year and Komisarek is gone after that anyway while Liles is signed for 3 more years.

I think they might also buyout Grabovski. If not, I think they save the second compliance buyout for next offseason with an eye on possibly buying Grabs out then if his play doesn't improve.

Nieuwendyk has been fired. Because of trades like the Cole deal.

Michael Ryder AND a 3rd for Erik Cole...smh...
First of all, I agree with you on the trade. We could've gotten a little more value for Ryder, and the third was just stupid.

However, Cole hasn't been a disaster of a return. He's been driving the net with speed, which is something you need from your 4th/5th best winger (Chiasson, Whitney, Eriksson, Benn ahead of him). I see him getting a solid 30-45 points next year on our third line/ 2nd PP unit. I'm very optimistic though.

Also, Dallas isn't buying anyone out this year. We're not even to the cap floor as is.

I really hope Edmonton buys out Ryan Smyth but I doubt that it happens...
There is way too much PR rapped up in Smyth to do it and he said at the end of the year that he wanted to return next season...

My Hope:
Buy Smyth out this year
Buy Horcoff out next year

What will prob happen:
Belanger this year
Eager this year

He's also injured and only played eight games this season.

If that happens we could possibly buy out Mez and then like RJ said Bryz next summer no matter what.
After signing our RFAs the Blues will be a whole lot closer to the cap so we won't be taking on Briere's contract.

Now I know he probably wouldn't sign a contract with MTL, but at that price I'd be all over him. He's a proven playoff performer year in/year out.

As far as our buyouts are concerned, we already bought Scott "7M$ Goal" Gomez, but I'm not so sure that Kaberle will be the one to get the buyout even if he is the obvious choice. I don't think Desharnais will get considered even if he should because that would be MB admitting to failure very early on in his tenure as GM.

I don't see Colorado buying out Jones. He's still got 3 years left, so I think they will give one more year to prove himself.

No one in Buffalo and yes, I say this with Ville Leino still on the roster. Highly unlikely Leino goes anywhere. We don't have a need for cap space and there's not going to be much else to spend it on this summer and we need all the top-six wingers we can get with Pominville already gone and Vanek likely out the door in the summer anyway. It makes zero sense to buy Leino out unless we are in dire need of cap space, in which case signifies we make a blockbuster trade(s) to take on significant salary (unlikely, as we'll be shipping Vanek out and will more than likely gain space rather than lose it). We won't need cap space for this summer's free agent class, that's for sure. Most of the best players are aging veterans (Iginla, Jagr, and Elias) who will look to go to contenders. The rest, like Ribeiro, Ryder, Scuderi, and Weiss likely won't pick Buffalo in the first place unless they take the money, so cap space shouldn't be a problem anyway.

For Chicago, Olesz could be bought out and Montador amnestied although some Hawks fans believe Montador could be useful still if there was a way of keeping him while remaining under the cap. I'd prefer to just keep Rozsival myself. He'd be cheaper and just as good.

It could be the one thing that makes this otherwise dull looking UFA crop a lot more exciting, however I think a number of teams will be a little reluctant to use the buyouts this year, knowing that they can wait one more year.

The obvious ones will go through like DiPietro, Kaberle, Komisarik, Olesz, Ballard, Briere(?)Jovanovski, Upshall, Umberger.

Next year will be the fun one when a number of teams will be looking at the eject button on certain long term contracts: Lecavialar, Zajac, Richards (both of them) Liles, Desharnais, Bourque, Horcoff, Laich, Franzen, Leino, Volchenkov, Ruutu, D. Jones, Cole, Wisniewski, Gaustad, Doan

Guys I'd think could be gone, some on amnesty, some not:
Leino
D.Jones
Olesz
Montador
Eager
Belanger
Upshall
Heatley (if healthy)
Kaberle
B.Richards (if they really wanted cap space)
Briere
Malone
Brewer
Komisarek
Booth
Ballard
J.Ward (I don't see this one, but if Caps wanted flexibility to re-sign Ribeiro)

There are injured guys that can't be bought out (I'm thinking Jovo)

Some guys that immediately come to mind:

Ville Leino
Mike Komisarek
Tomas Kaberle
Joel Ward
Ryan Malone
Ben Eager
Steve Montador

Hopefully Detroit amnesties at least Samuelsson. Also, Colaiacovo has been a disaster, as most expected.

No, I agree with you. He's been pretty solid as a third or fourth liner. But they traded Ryder for Cole because they had identical stats last season and Cole "had term." It was essentially trading Ryder's stats for Ryder's stats with another few years ensured. In theory, sounds great. But it didn't work out like that. And that's the "failure" part. Cole didn't put up the points everyone expected of him.

Unfortunately, you're right. They won't buy him out. I don't like him though. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's just been bad. He brings speed and a little grit, but that's it. And that's DEFINITELY not worth Ryder AND that 3rd rounder.

Oh well. Maybe we can trade him for a pick or something. Late round, obviously.

Leino can't...in part because he is injured currently. There are two windows...June and September for buyouts. He isnt going to be healthy in June.

There is also a cap floor they need to be above which is why they keep him this year if they trade Vanek and miller. If they dont retain salary from those trades they will be barely above the floor.

The only UFAs they would sign would be a 3rd/4th line Center and a middle of the road vet Dman ...both to 1 or 2 yr contracts.
