Probably ends any speculation of Alex Edler ever playing here.

Wow that's very disturbing to watch. Just looking at Staal's reaction is heart breaking.

Is it just me or does it look like Edler was targeting the knee? He certainly makes no attempt to avoid contact and seems to be angling for Staal's leg/knee.

Assuming an ACL tear, does that mean hockey Canada (or their insurance company more accurately) are on the hook for Staal's salary while he is out?

Also, when Edler comes to town, who's going to throw a tire chain at him?

Sick, disgusting play by Edler. No way he didn't know what he was doing. No effort to not hit Eric's knee. Just glided right into. I'm beside myself right now.

So the 2013-14 season ended on May 16, 2013? That's got to be a new record for us.

Watching that it looks like the impact is just below the knee. IDK what that means anatomically (broken leg maybe?)

Ouch. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, being a Hurricanes fan. I hope it turns out to be not as bad as it/Staal's reaction looked.

Pretty sure it's a ligament injury.

A broken leg would probably be better than an ACL tear. We really should stop speculating till we know more. (Like that is ever going to happen)

Most likely. The teams are insured again player injury for the tournament but the specific details aren't public. For example it's possible the insurance doesn't cover 100% of the contract or that there's a delay before it kicks in, e.g. only after the player has missed 30 days of the regular season or something like that.

This. If Staal had his leg heading in one direction with a sudden jarring impact just below the knee heading the opposite direction, which is exactly what happened, there is a good chance that something was blown out, most likely the ACL.

On the main board, the point is made that there is no hyper extension, hence its probably not a tear. It's may be a bruise or a broken bone. But I've never seen any hockey player lying on the ice screaming in pain, much less Eric "12 games missed in the last 9 seasons" Staal.

Eric is a warrior. Despite what some people may think of him, I think we will see him come the start of the regular season.
