Kings send Tim Gleason and center Eric Belanger to Carolina for Oleg Tverdovsky and the rights to defenceman Jack Johnson.

Geez

the defending cup champions, just got weaker, much weaker. I can't believe thats the best they could pull off.

Nice move by LA.

This is extremely similar to the Pitkanen trade. If they win another cup next year, it should be real easy to tell who won.

Definately shades of Clarke in Lombardi. Good for LA.

CAR GM: Yeah could I get a #1 with a coke and a 10 piece nuggets please.

LA GM: Uh, that's all you wanted for Johnson?

Maybe LA could swing JJ this way as part of that "future considerations" thing for JR

I really don't understand Carolina's impatience with Johnson. I mean, was he going to go back into the draft this year?

Not exactly, for the next couple of years this will benefit the Hurricanes, they dealt Tvedovsky (salary dump) and a prospect for two players who'll be suting up this season.

Long term the Canes probably loses big time though.

No he isn't. The Canes lost Kaberle until February and needed a defenseman that wasn't Tverdovsky and would be able to play for the team to plug the hole.

The trade fills their need, but dayum...

Jack Johnson is in college, he doesn't go back into the draft, the Kings hold his rights until he graduates.

Right, so, am I the only one perplexed at how impatient Carolina has been?

Wow. I think this is going to turn out to be a BIG mistake for the Canes and a great thing for the Kings.

No. If you look at Jim Rutherford's history, he's never been one to let guys come up through the system. After they signed Glen Wesley as an RFA, it wasn't until after they drafted Andrew Ladd was their pipeline respectable. Now that Johnson is gone, and Ward and Ladd will both be in the NHL this year (I don't care what HF says Ward and Ladd are not prospects if they're NHL regulars) they don't have anyone projected to be anymore than a fringe player.

We can only hope. As a Kings fan as well as a Flyers fan, Bob Clarke gave me hope when he gave his blessing and let Dean Lombardi go to LA.

That is a preposterous trade. With comparisons to Scott Stevens, I don't understand the Canes' need to jettison him so quickly. Especially for what they got. Looks like the Flyers could have offered Meyers and Nedved, not that Rutherford would trade within the conference.
