Because those minutes are the hardest minutes faced by a dman in the league...

Oilers would kill for a defenceman like him. Keep on drafting I guess.

Leafs are better off keeping Phaneuf. He plays some of the toughest minutes in the NHL. I can see the Leafs acquiring another defenceman to take some of the minutes away from Phaneuf. He looked tired (and injured) in the playoffs.

Only way Phaneuf goes is if we're getting a #1 C or at least someone capable of playing the #1 C.

Wait there is more!

Then maybe Stastny + 3rd 2014 if Stastny signs with the leafs for JVR and Morgan Reilly? Stastny fills the 1st line hole the leafs drastically need.
What in the blue Hell is this?!?!?

The same kind of offers we have been getting for Stastny by Leaf fans. And tbh I thought the Phaneuf offer was worse.

No one to replace his minutes, he isnt going anywhere. If anything I think the leafs would look to add to the top pair not take away from it.

I don't see why Oil fans are opposed to getting Phaneuf. He is exactly what we need on the blueline.

He eats minutes, he hits and he has a hard shot...even if it never hits the net at least he shoots.

The problem is trade value. He is a rental.

Do you give up a ton of assets for possibly 1 year of a player?

And If I was Nonis, do I have someone that can take his minutes now and not later?

At most. 2 2nds this year and Hartikainen.

His shot accuracy was actually really improved this year. I definitely heard less of "Phaneuf shoots high and wide"

Also, I'm assuming the 2 2nds and Hartikainen is as high as the Oilers would go? I would think another team would be able to offer more than that even if he was traded at the deadline.

It's all pretty much moot though because we really have no replacement for the minutes Phaneuf eats each night.

Except Smid is a solid 3/4 guy & with edm & toronto's pick they can talk to teams in the top 4 with assets they might like.

Bieksa might be a decent starting point (scratch that, actually Edler might be a much better starting point), but no interest in Roy whatsoever. His stint in Vancouver probably looked every bit as good to outsiders as it did to you.

Well, we could "add" to the top pair by trading Phaneuf if we got a superior #1 coming back. Of course, we would have to add, but that's the only way I see him being traded--if we get somebody better to replace him. He is a workhorse and he does eat up minutes, but he has more responsibility than he can handle on the Leafs.

This. Unless his part of a package for an upgrade, he won't go anywhere because of our lack of d as it is.

No, it's just that Del Zotto's skating isn't that great and he tends to panic and overreact to his partner's mistakes, so pairing him with Phaneuf won't work.

Yes I would package Staal for him. I make it clear often that IMO Staal is over rated. I'd move him ASAP. Keeps getting injured last 2-3 seasons. NyR is fine without him.

Why? Everyone knows Staal will be in Carolina in two years max.

I think it's a tempting offer. Keep in mind I'm in the group of people that wants Phaneuf locked up longterm, so I'm not coming in here as somebody that's a Phaneuf hater and wants him out the door for nothing.

At 7th overall, there's a VERY good chance Monahan is on the board. Or we could target Nuchuskin. I think Carolina takes Nurse, and Calgary takes Lindholm (I'd prefer Lindholm to Monahan, i just highly doubt he's there at 7). We could even hold off on making the trade until after the 6th overall pick is made.

Is Smid as good as Phaneuf? No. But if Rielly can become as good as we hope, a top pairing of Rielly-Smid actually sounds pretty good. With Gardiner/Finn/Percy/etc all developing to fill in the rest of the key blueline positions.

It would hurt us short term (obviously), but it could really be a solid move longterm if Monahan becomes a Toews-lite type of player. We desperately need an upgrade down the middle, we desperately need more size down the middle, and we desperately need something that at least remotely resembles a potential future Selke candidate.

I think those types of elite two-way players are absolutely invaluable. See M. Richards/Kopitar, Bergeron, Toews, J. Staal, Datsyuk, Brind'Amour, etc. All key players in their respective SC runs. This trade gives us a chance to get a potential high end two-way centre with size + a decent #2-3 defenceman who's style of play would work well with Rielly/Gardiner.
