I don't think it's a sensible nomination, yet.
Excellence of play and a small amount of penalties. That's essentially why he was nominated. No need to look into it any more than that.

It's because he's tremendously unlikable.

Well, I don't agree with those being the qualifications to it. EDIT: At least the only ones. The PIMs should be considered an indicator, at best, but I don't think many players would mistake them to be perfectly correlated with gentlemanly play.

I think he's very likable. He likes to party. So what?

Pavel Datsyuk shouldn't have fought so many people

Patrick Kane is a great hockey player. He helped his team by staying out of the box. Yeah, other players benefit from not being whacked in the face with a stick too, I guess, but I just don't get "gentleman" from that.

Fair or not, Kane has built an ungentlemanly image with the cabbie incident, the drinking, the bird flipping, etc. It's going to take time to change that image in people's minds. I'm sure he is maturing, on and off the ice, but he doesn't launch to the top of the list just like that.

it used to be very prestigious.

voting is generally ridiculous, though. it is basically just a combination of points and PIM.

lidstrom was an extremely clean player, and had far more difficult assignments than one dimensional scoring F's, but never won. it is obviously easier for players to avoid PIM who don't have to play D against star players.

datsyuk won 4, and i hope his 2 way play was a big factor, but lidstrom was more deserving. lidstrom should have more byngs than norris.

byng was created b/c early hockey was extremely dirty (it was common to intentionally and blatantly injure opponents), so being a great player while playing within the rules was promoted by the NHL.

when byng was first created, it was almost as prestigious as the hart (which was not for best player).

People so mad at Kane, but it's coo.

Side note:

It seems like Deadspin does actual reporting while places like ESPN are becoming worse and worse for sports news. Also, deadspin doesnt have to filter anything so you get the full story.

Carry on.

Kane's situation reminds me of this one joke.

A guy sit's in a country-side bar, drinking his beer. A stranger comes in, sits besides that guy and sees the guy is feeling a bit blue.

The stranger asks the guy: "Why with the long face?"

The sad guy answers: "Did you saw that big, great house beside this bar?"

Stranger answers: "Yes. Of course"

Sad guy: "I built that house, all by myself. But do they call me 'Brian the housebuilder?' No!"

Sad guy asks again: "Did you came over that bridge crossing that big river?"

Stranger: "Of course."

Sad guy: "I build that bridge too. All by myself. Took me two years. Do they call me 'Brian the bridge-builder?' NO! But try and **** a sheep once...."

Kane probably has/still has some personal issues but he had a great year and on-ice I have no complaints about him. I still think St.Louis should and he will take this. I would have not pegged Kane as the top-3 but he is far from the worst candidate.
