I heard a thoughtful commentary about the arena from Bob Layton on the morning radio today. It was actually quite refreshing. http://www.630ched.com/Blogs/BobLayt...tryID=10545330

He'd have a hard time pulling off that "magic trick" anyway.

This isn't a thread about mayoral elections.

What other cities dont have free parking? I just can't see how the city could justify hiring people(salaries) to patrol for parking violations after 6 as it stands right now. I could definitely see them doing it on game nights and when theres big shows in town, but not every night unless downtown really gets busy.

Just curious since I don't live in Edmonton. What is on the proposed site for the arena now and how long would it take to clear. Just wondering why they would wait so long for ground breaking.

There is not much of anything on it except the casino. The rest is gravel parking lot.

There will likely need to be a good bit of soil remediation done though, since there was a rail yard and warehouses in the land for what, 60 years?

That, and final detailed design of the arena is still going on.

Doubt it they have to dig deep to put in underground parking .

I believe there's only limited underground parking (one level), and everything else is above-ground in the arena (no sunken bowl as is customary), so they likely won't be dig all that deep. My guess, anyway.

Not a lot I believe. A casino and some rocks.

While the crews are at it, could we pay them to demolish those dreadful balls our fearless leader decided was a good idea?

There's a greyhound station, a staples office depot, a few small parking lots, a casino and a huge gravel parking lot where the arena will be. There's a new LRT station being built north of that big gravel parking lot -- adjacent to it. Shouldn't take very long to clear.

This image was shown at a luncheon yesterday, a day after council approved of the arena; it is located on 106th street along 104th avenue, a couple blocks from the arena:

I don't think it would have been shown had Wednesday's events not happened.

I can't wait for more images to be released showing what is intended for the surrounding area!

It would be nice to see some specific plans for the whole district, including of course, the arena itself.

I haven't read this entire thread, but if anyone has links to the details, it would be much appreciated.

Funny you should mention that.

It comes across as a bit of a puff piece, but it does shed some light on what to expect:

That thread should help - they have some of he information you are looking for towards the end of the thread and if you post some questions they are very helpful. Some of the peoe there are a little more into the architecture and design, so there will be more details.

He should have said leaders, as in what ever bone head decided to require 'art' to take up a % of any capital project. A stupider policy would be tough to come by.

What else is there?

Oilers have been lousy, but entertainment industry has been far worse and with hugely declining fugly numbers.

Maybe Katz is onto something. This is the worst time in the entertainment industry to be building huge world class arenas. Because the entertainment out there is anything but.

More to the point without a bunch of senior citizen entertainers still out on tour mopping it up the concert entertainment industry seems pretty much dead and buried. With few up and coming artists that have the profile to sell out such venues.

heres the facts:

http://www.pollstar.com/news_article.aspx?ID=803742

look, I like and admire independents as much as anybody, and I have a long list of current artists I like, but most of these are playing in a pitchfork universe and were never intended to be selling out huge venues.

What we have in present day is much more artists, more diverse musical veins and tastes, and less plurality in musical taste. Which bodes more for smaller entertainment facilities and far less for large arena/stadia.

We're building an entertaiment arena complex when big ticket large audience shows are dying a slow death. The music industry hasn't been in this much trouble since around 1962.

I agree that the big ticket entertainment venue industry for musical acts is dying, with most of the concerts being the biggest of the current big names, or old rockbands that still have huge fanbases.

However, I see it more as a venue for sporting events than musical concerts. For me personally, I probably wouldn't see a single concert in the new building (or even rexall place for that matter) due to personal tastes and their fanbase in this area. Instead, if they wanted to be at the new facility, they will be using the winter garden stage (assuming that is still in the plans) which is more fitting for most small artists.

But again, its not the arena by itself thats being sold here, its the entire district. The only thing this district is lacking (for me anyways) is an on site large convention centre, similar to how LA does their area with staples centre and the convention center. But because Edmonton already has the shaw conference center nearby, and an even larger Expo center, it would make no sense to build another convention hall.

If you had the convention center or arena being in use, then the entire district has alot of people and business on that day, and cover more days of the year of being lively.
