lol what?

They outplayed Sweden for the most part. They can be faulted for not getting depth scoring, but one could say the exact same thing about Sweden.

If Sweden wins it all, I'll be surprised.

Awesome!! Canada "outplayed" a Swedish team that every Swedish fan on this board said was the worst team they'd seen assembled in recent memory ... and still lost on the scoreboard.

I guess if you can take comfort in that ....

No, it's a crappy loss. There is no comfort to be taken.

I just don't like the expression "deserve to win".

You either win or you don't.

edit: so, umm, only Petry is left to cheer for? that's depressing

And our Canadian team? I have to say it was also one of the poorest squads I have seen.

The poorest utilization of players I'd ever seen. You damn well be sure if Sweden had players like Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle they'd be finding ways to use them and on the PP.

This whole tournament was another Lindy Ruff fail.

Guy should just pack it in. Hopeless.

Really about the worst possible result one could expect for a Team Canada is losing in the semi finals. We managed to lose in the quarterfinals under Ruff.

Question, is the Erik Gustafson(sp) player for team Sweden the one the Oilers drafted?

Pretty sure the one on Team Sw is the same as the one who played for the Flyers this year. An undersized d-man along the lines of Stephane Robidas. Possibly a nice player.

The guy the Oilers drafted in 2012 played in the Swe-1 league this past season - doubt he would have played on the WC Team.

No, it's the un-drafted Erik Gustafsson (1988) playing for the Flyers.

Our Erik Gustafsson (1992) is doing good as well, but not at the same level, yet. This season he played very good for Djurgarden in their fight to make it back to SEL (I suppose you know the system of the Swedish leagues were teams can go up and down). Djurgarden wanted to keep him since he is/was one the key players but in the end Gustafsson (advised by his agent) wanted to be back in the SEL (he played 11/12 in SEL). Once it was clear he was on the market several teams tried to get him. In the end he was signed by Frolunda (6th place this season) for next season. My team in Sweden! And I am thrilled to have him as he seems to be on the verge of a SEL break-through.

I'll try to follow his progress as much as possible and send updates from time to time, but in another thread I guess -

Not much better but at least they got to the semifinals.

I don't think this absolves Ruff.

This is a fired NHL coach that has now bombed in a very weak WC tournament with on paper easily the best team in the tournament.

Hopefully Ruff is a patient man, phone might not be ringing.

He did have a decent roster. Thing is it's a throw together that has to learn on the fly playing against real teams that have been together, for the most part, for many more practices and other events.

It's pretty hard to get excited about this tournament unless you have a vested interest in watching certain players. We just did not get to see that.

Oh well. Free agency and the draft are looming. I am going to focus on that now. This is all unfortunate history now.

I can definitely agree that Ruff had his issues. So did the team. How do you not put Stamkos in the shootout? Hall could have been a good choice too.

I don't imagine this helps his resume.

There's a reason Ruff has never accomplished anything in his career despite having Vanek and Miller on his roster and playing in a very weak conference.

I have this strange feeling that Canada of late has become a bit like Russia. Big names, skilled players but not enough effort in terms of team play. For Russia it's basically always a 50/50 situation, crash and burn or play well enough for 1st/2nd place in any tournament. I never thought this was a problem for Canada mainly because Canadian players are very good at knowing and accepting the roles they get as players (even if that's not their normal role, i.e. skilled players can "become" grit/energy players in international tournaments if necessary). Also that they always give (gave?) 110% of effort in every single shift, skating, hitting and crashing the net and really wearing down their opponents.

Maybe it's just my imagination though. I bet you'll be back with a vengeance in time for the Olympics...

Usa took a well deserved medal, Granlund dominated in the 3 period and took Finland back in the game. Galchenyuk with 2 great shootout goals sealed the deal.

Granlund is suited for big rinks and that is the biggest problem for especially Canada, to adjust to bigger surfaces in a short time.Canada take out players bye their CV and not how they are suited for big rinks. A hungry less player is much better for a team then a "star" who hasnt the drive.

Usa gave their young prospects a lot of icetime like trouba,Galchenyuk and the goalie Gibson (who took the job from Bishop).

I think Kreuger had made a goldteam from this Canadian team,he has experience with euro rinks and are updated on players in Nhl . Ruff was a disaster, i think he didnt had a clue about some of the players strenght, Taylor Hall had the drive and didnt get the minutes he should, instead Ruff chickened out and gave misfits a lot of minutes.

Meh, I can't be upset at the loss. Canada owned Sweden. When you dominate a team like that and still lose, it's more about being unlucky than poor coaching. Hall not being on the PP when our PP was relatively crappy the whole tourney was stupid, though.

Not the first time it has happened, not the last. Elimination games are very different from league/playoff games. 1 strike and you're out, teams like Sweden has been able to come through (without much of a team on paper) more than once. It is not coincidental.

By the way, who cares about Sweden, Switzerland beat Sweden, Canada, Czech Rep and the in elimination games Czech Rep and USA. They were the worse team every single day, but the found a way to win. The beauty of these tournaments is that some(/many)times math/stats/names goes out the door and energy, will and strategy wins.
