Who's the second best player in the world?

If you ask me, it's really tight. I feel like it's 2A, 2B, 2C....

Stamkos, Malkin, St-Louis and Jonathan Toews all make strong cases. Hell, Ovi seems to have bounced back to top 3 or perhaps it was a flash in pan?(see playoffs).

But who, in your opinion, is the second best?

Malkin. Although he's pretty lazy, he's the second best out there.

You mention Toews, but do not mention Zetterberg or Datsyuk?

Hawks fan, or just favoring Canadians?

Also, no mention of Karlsson?

Note: Datsyuk won the Kharlamov trophy again this year, so his peers consider him better than Malkin or Ovechkin (another you didn't mention). And Datsyuk vs. Zetterberg is a very close debate.

Malkin...although I think less of him sometimes. I think he needs to go on another team to maximize his talents, he's in the shadows of Crosby.

While Karlsson is good, I don't think he has done enough yet to warrant being in this discussion. Let us not forget that Mike Green at one point put up fantastic numbers as well.

Malkin. Not the best regular season but the best track record. And when Geno is on, he's ON, arguably the best player those times.. too bad he doesn't/can't do that consistently.

Malkin, hands down. He's actually closer to Crosby than the third player is to him.

Crosby.

Datsyuk is the best player.

Other than Crosby, every player you listed has a flaw that keeps them from being at his level. Malkin is lazy when he doesn't have the puck and gets frustrated easily, Ovechkin is one-dimensional and often inconsistent, Stamkos doesn't make a major impact other than scoring and is prone to streakiness, Toews doesn't have the same kind of game-breaking offensive ability. I'd agree that it's a case where there is a clear superior player and several players vying for the #2 spot (I'd include Datsyuk and Lundqvist in that category)

I'd say Malkin right now.

Datsyuk has won the Kharlamov trophy two of the past three years.

Malkin won it in 2012.

Ovechkin won it from 2006 to 2010.

Malkin only wins track record if you're going based on his Smythe, and at that point Zetterberg beats him because Zetterberg had a Smythe-worthy run that year as well and won the Smythe the year before.

And also, Zetterberg was arguably better than Datsyuk this year (IMO, Z was Detroit's MVP and best player on the year as a whole - especially if you include the playoffs so far); meaning Zetterberg was arguably better than a player who won an award saying he was better than Malkin or Ovechkin.

Who's the best?

I'm assuming Malkin because he is the only player to win the Art Ross twice after the lockout, but I don't think he is even as dominant as Jagr who won it 4 times in a row

1. Malkin
2. Ovie (goals > assists)
3. St Louis, both Sedins, Crosby, Thornton

I always find it interesting how goaltenders are never included in these discussions. Given how often the Rangers are "outplayed" (again, a phrase that discounts/ignores goalies), you have to have Lundqvist in this conversation given the team's relative success in recent years. Thank you for including him.

Z is not the 2nd best player in the world. He was sub-par in the middle half of the seasons and isn't near what he used to be defensively.

Malkin is the 2nd best player in the whole.
