Haven't seen him play, but heard he had a terrible U18s.

So hard to predict who would be available at 84th.

Wouldn't take Hagg in the 1st.

Not overly impressive. We've passed up better Swedish defensman in the past.

Can't see our guys having a huge conviction to take him in the 1st.

Talking to blazers player cole ully today and the Canucks are far and away the most interested team in him he said. Met him at the pool while taking my kids out lol so I figured I would ask him if any scouts have been talking

Yeah, much to difficult to know who might be there at 84. I thought Baptiste might be there, but he overall had a very good U18. Maybe Moutrey, Tambellini, Buckles, Hill? But each of these guys have attributes that could very likely see them taken early.

Yay! Our western scouts aren't completely inept!

I don't like Hagg at all. Would definitely take Domi of he was available at our pick.

Subban would be a good pick in the third but he'll go in the second because of his last name.

Thefeebster: you have any footage of Buckles? Has me incredibly intrigued.

Cole Ully is one of those players you notice when he plays. Always seems to be ranked close to Greg Chase in Calgary, but I like Ully a lot more.

Wouldn't want him until the 4th though.

Wish we had 10+ picks this year.

Very true, it is almost impossible to predict. Unfortunately I have zero confidence in Gillis' drafting outside the 1st round.

I'm still facepalming at Mallet over Severson.

Well that is less on Gillis and more on the scouts IMO.

Gillis doesn't watch all these guys. He pays people to watch them.

Zero confidence? Last I checked we've drafted quite a few great players outside the 1st round, including Corrado.

A grand total of zero players Gillis has drafted after the 1st round have become NHLers. Corrado looks very likely to change that, but it's still a pretty dismal record.

No footage, i did try to find some. Most of the info i can get are from those Ontario scouts like LaFortune & co. But I too am very intrigued. I think I mentioned this before, but his season this year is better than Devin Shore's who went at the end of the 2nd round and Shore has had an excellent year as a rookie in the NCAA. Although not guaranteed to follow to same development path, I still think Buckles would have good value in the 3rd and would be very happy to get him with our 3rd. Buckles plays a pro style game, is a natural goal scorer (4th in the OJHL this season), and has a winning attitude.

Ully sounds like a good gamble in those later rounds.

Here are some random other teams' players drafted outside the 1st round since 2008 that are now NHL regulars:

Ottawa: Patrick Wiercioch, Zach Smith, Jakob Silfverberg, Robin Lehner, Jean-Gabriel Pageau

Nashville: Roman Josi, Anders Lindback, Gabriel Bourque, Craig Smith

Chicago: Marcus Kruger, Brandon Pirri, Andrew Shaw, Brandon Saad

Dallas: Philip Larsen, Tomas Vincour, Reilly Smith, Alex Chiasson

Colorado: Mark Olver, Tyson Barrie, Stefan Elliott, Ryan O'Reilly

Los Angeles: Andrei Loktionov, Slava Voynov, Jordan Nolan, Kyle Clifford, Tyler Toffoli

Vancouver: Corrado(?)

I have zero confidence in Gillis' drafting outside the 1st round. Obviously we might end up with some decent players when all's said and done, but relative to other teams, we suck at drafting outside the 1st round.

yeah it seems that since Gillis took over the drafting in the 1st round is BPA and after that is just a random draw.

How much real impact does Gillis have over the later round picks though? It seems that we should be criticizing his hiring of scouts rather than the selections themselves

Gillis can choose to fire his scouts at any time.

i got a funny feeling Ully is going to be our third rounder this year, hes mature and had a great head on his shoulders, Sounds like a Gillis type pic. didnt mind me and my kids asking him a question when he was out with his friends.

Detroit has zero NHL regulars drafted outside of the 1st round since 2008 (Nyquist might finally be one, 5 years later). Do you have zero faith in their drafting outside of the 1st round?

There's guys drafted outside of the 1st round that are progressing as prospects: Price, Cannata, Andersson, Blomstrand and more. Prospects in later rounds take time.

Not to mention the fact that half the guys you mentioned were drafting in early 2nd round before the Canucks ever got around to picking. Are we the best drafting team in the league? Clearly not. But I'm quite honestly getting tired of the hyperbole.

Not really. They had plenty of veterans on their AHL team this season.

Agree with Tiranis regarding draft position, guys in the 30s are basically just late 1st rounders. You might as well make the cutoff 50th rather than 30th.

Having said that, not impressed with Gillis' 2nd and 3rd round pick, he's trying way too hard to find miracle longshots rather than taking the smart puck.

he didn't clear house entirely, that's his fault
