That's why I said it was interesting. I think they are all real close. What I've see of Trouba's shot, he's right in there.

It's funny, I didn't get to watch much of the game. I turned it on this morning while eating breakfast at about 6:40 and it was the start of the 3rd. At that point it was 4-1 USA. By the time I left at 7, it was 8-3.

I did see Trouba's goal though.

Holy ****. Did anybody see that knee on knee Edler on Staal? That looks nasty. Staal was in A LOT of pain.

Edler got 5 + game, could face suspension. If Sweden loses this game, they are done. Next international opportunity for Edler is the Sochi Olympics? Wonder if an IIHF suspension would carry over to that?

Yeah it was painful to watch. Staal could be seriously injured.

That was really awful to see.

Watching the replay a few times, I don't believe Edler intentionally tried to go knee on knee with Staal. Still though, it was a reckless play that could have easily been avoided.

Don't know how IIHF suspensions typically work, I would say in the NHL it would probably be 1-2 games.

It looked pretty intentional to me. He even lifted his skate of the ice so he would hyper extend his knee with contact. His path was never going to be body on body.

Used sparingly because they were dressing 8 D....on balance the Swiss dominated the game. Jacob played a pretty clean game although he tends to want to hit often which I like but you have to pick your spots. IMHO he could play next year on our bottom pair slightly sheltered to start.

Watching the bronze medal game against the Finns, Trouba does not look 19. Coach is using him huge during the 4 on 4 OT. He's been awesome.

I don't know what is more surprising, that a 19 year old Trouba looks like a seasoned vet out there, or that Joe Sacco has learned how to use defensemen to the best of their abilities.

Trouba was the best defender on the ice 4 on 4 in OT.....two great rushes and one blast where he beat the goalie high blocker side but it hit the knob of his stick!

really impressive and aggressive 4 or 4

Okay. Let's just pencil Trouba into the opening day lineup then.

Is Redmond waiver-eligible? I think that's the case, which gives us five RD to open the year. I think Postma or Buff gets moved before July 1.

Trouba just became our best prospect ahead of Mark IMO. He could be an elite d man. This is very exciting possibility now.

Wow! How good does Jacob Trouba look for Team USA. Fine looking player there.

Chris Peters Chris Peters ‏@chrismpeters 26m

Team USA's best defenseman overall in this game has probably been Jacob Trouba. Poised with puck. #IIHFWorlds

And just like that it's 2-0. Stastny gets the one-timer goal off feeds by Smith and Trouba. U.S. PP over 30% in tourney #IIHFWorlds

that bronze medal game was all about the 19 yr old

Gibson - best goalie in tournament - nuff said
Trouba - poise, composure and competence in regulation - when OT starts he flips the switch, shows his offensive chops, and only the handle on Raantaa's stick prevents game winner
Galchenyuk - anchors shootout - calmly pots it in must score situation then calmly pots it to win the bronze

awesome awesome stuff

edit: I'm definitely in the camp of those who would like to see Raantaa backing up Pavs next season

Stuart Trouba

I don't see that happening. Bogosian played the 5th hardest minutes for Dmen this past season . He needs to be with an experienced vet that can handle those minutes. I like Trouba, but at 19 he would get destroyed playing those minutes, and it's a waste to play Bogo against lesser comp to shelter his partner.

Super off-topic but how coaches use their players is my biggest interest when it comes to strategy/system and why I got into underlying numbers and advanced statistics.

I'm interested to see how this will look next season, especially with the move out west.

2011-12 Noel split the matchups between top 2 pairs but ***** slapped Bogo and Hainsey into the D-zone as defensive specialists.

2012-13 Noel started doing the same thing with the pairs being Enstrom-Byfuglien + Stuart-Hainsey... but after Buff's injury Noel changed and gave the tough-matchups to one pair first being Enstrom-Hainsey, and then when Hainsey-Bogosian got back he used and abused the **** out of those two.

Interestingly with forwards he went through a similar patter but different pattern: last season splitting between LLW and GST while pushing GST into the D-zone, but then started this season splitting toughs between LLW and USSR but gave d-zone push to Slater's line although mostly against 3rd/4th liners... after the Poni trade Noel started to load up all the tough match-ups to LLW and started pushing them back after Slater's injury.

So, where these guys end up will depend on Noel's usage, and vice versa. My guess is you are right and will likely see Bogo and who ever he is with get used extremely tough minutes.

...sorry long rant... I just find this stuff really interesting... I would love an interview with Noel and get inside his head about these decisions.
