As a matter of fact, I'd argue a #1 D is more important than a 1C, therefore I would personally take Letang, and Staal over him in a draft. You win cups from the back end and in goal.

1.Malkin
2.Crosby
3.Lundqvist
4.Stamkos
5.Giroux/Kovalchuk
6.Letang
7.Tavares
8.Staal
9.Nash
10.Elias
There is so much wrong with your list...

Why is Stamkos there? Why is Malkin over Crosby? I wont even start arguing with you but here is my list by the 2014 divisions:

1. Sidney Crosby
2. Alex Ovechkin
3. Evgeni Malkin
4. Henrik Lundqvist
5. John Tavares
6. Eric Staal
7. Ilya Kovalchuk
8. Claude Giroux
9. Kris Letang
10. Rick Nash

Wow as much as I hate toews this poll is so off. Tavares has done nothing. Toews lead a team to the cup and is the face of the team. Tavares took the islanders to the playoffs and he isn't even ppg. Give me a break.

I'd take a Hart finalist over a Selke candidate, point production > "intangibles"

Toews has more points

They're even offensively, seriously, this is ridiculous. When did Tavares become more overrated than Toews? Islanders fans voted Nabokov their MVP this season, he was not even point per game, Toews was.

Tavares is overrated due to his draft position and praise he recieved before his draft. He's not as good as Toews. Maybe one day he will be, cause he's a hell of a player, but top 5 player? He was 17th in scoring and he's a center, and he's not a Selke candidate.

And I'm a HUGE Toews hater.

Letang is a defenseman who had a better PPG, how was he not a better player at least this year? Oh my God, now Tavares is officially the most overrated player in the NHL.

Toews has more help too, he normally plays with any combination of Kane, Hossa, Sharp, etc. Tavares has had... Matt Moulson and scraps, not elite wingers/forwards and other high level support like Keith, Seabrook, Oduya, etc.

Nabby's point production has to go up next season or else

A few things:

The help argument is meaningless. Good players produce, simple as that. Malkin won a Conn Smythe with Talbot and Fedotenko even strength.

Toews has won more and has lead a cup winning team, Tavares hasn't made it out of the first round. Team or no team, that matters. One player has been there and won a Conn Smythe. Another hasn't. He may be better than Toews next year.

Tavares wasn't the Isle's best forward against the pens in the first series. Not sure how Toews was in his.

I like both players, and the poll is representative of how the majority feel here.

Good Argument,

2013:
Toews: 48 points 47 games
Tavares 47 points 48 games

Career PPG:
Toews: 373P in 408G: 0.92PPG

Tavares: 249P in 291G: 0.86PPG

Looks like we have a winner here.
