Jussi Jokinen

Hi!

I was looking for information about Jussi Jokinen and his current situation. I have been noticing that he has not been playing after the first round. Is it because Crosby came back and there really is no room for him or is he injured after that Reasoner hit?

Statwise his game would look ok. 11 pts in 10 games in regular season and 2 pts in 4 games in playoffs. His faceoff percentages look good also. Is there something behind those numbers?

Thanks in advance!

He should be playing, but DB will never change the lineup till they drop a few games in embarrassing fashion again.

Jussi's been great, he's just a little lost in the depth chart right now. Don't need him for the top 6 (he's not Crosby or Malkin), Vitale is more effective in a 4th line role because he's faster, more physical and wins roughly the same number of faceoffs.

If you float around Pens circles enough, you'll find at least some people that want to bump Sutter out for JJ (not endorsing that, just mentioning it), so it's not like anybody's been displeased with his work since coming here.

Like Beau Bennett, he's just a victim of too much depth right this second.

Yeah, It's understandable when looking at that top-9 that there is not much room.

At this rate we won't need to worry about giving up any pick for him regardless of them being conditional as they won't be met

He might be useful playing wing but who do you scratch? Kennedy may get dropped if he has a bad game or two.

Jussi has been great for us, his faceoff prowess is amazing and he can chip in offensively as well.

I've loved what he's brought, but like others have said, he's a victim of the numbers game.

I could see him getting into the line up and scoring an important goal, ala Miroslav Satan in 2009.

I'm sure he'll get a long look next year if nothing else.

I doubt that, if they felt he was the best option in any role, he'd be playing.

Next year I expect:

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Neal-Malkin-Iginla
Cooke-Sutter-Jokinen
Glass-Vitale-Adams

Nothing wrong with Jussi, he is a good player and doing exactly what he was brought in to do, provide depth, one injury and he will be in the line-up.

heck, he might get in sooner if Kennedy or Vitale slow down or play dumb.

HF regulars think this is video game where they set the line up once and play with the exact same team every game, the real world doesn't work like that.

Id put Jussi in for Sutter for a game if we go up 3-0. Sometimes a game off to clear one's head and take a breather can get a guy back on track... its awesome to have a Despres, Eaton, Jussi, and Bennet in the fold and ready to go if need be... even a Glass in case Adams goes down... really got our bases covered for the inevitable injury

He can't score better than the guys in our top 6 & can't grind better than the guys in our bottom 6. Doesn't make him a bad player but we're winning games this way.

I think Jussi should be in the game for versatility purposes. He's like a swiss army knife. He can play winger or center, probably our best faceoff man, is good in the defensive zone, can set up and score, and would bring some x-factor scoring that teams need when the going gets tough.

I think we'd be better off dressing him.

I wouldn't mind seeing a bottom six of

Morrow-Jokinen-Kennedy
Cooke-Sutter-Adams/Vitale

though you do lose some grit by sitting one of Vitale or Adams. I just like that third line. Kennedy is obviously a far cry from Dupuis at this point, but it kind of recreates a line that had a lot of success in the few games it was together. And having Kennedy on the line mitigates some of the speed concerns of Morrow.

I like the thought of having Crosby, Jokinen, and Vitale in the lineup. 3 guys who can click in the upper 50%'s in the dot.

It might have just been a coincidence, but Jokinen's game seemed to drop off as soon as Sid came back and he was moved to the wing. I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved in the offseason, unless he gets some more time at wing in the playoffs and does well with it.

Jokinen looked good with any combo of Kuntiz/Dupuis/Morrow/Bennett. Then he played a couple of games with Glass and Adams and that was the last anyone has seen of him.

Probably not a coincidence.

Jokienen isnt a fourth liner, per se... he thrives when getting second or top line minutes, is ok on a third line, but isnt going to produce playing a handful of non offensive minutes. If he comes back, the lowest he should be is 3rd line center... If he is playing, it means Sutter is at best on the 4th line.

There's a 0% chance of Bennett not being penciled into our top 9 next year. He projects to be a good top 6 player if things continue, so I can't imagine Shero (or hell, even Bylsma) would want to slow that progress in any way.

If we get Iggy back, then Jokinen/Glass/Adams/Vitale rotate in or out of the lineup. But BB will be in every game, if he's healthy.

I think Iginla will be here. I don't think Morrow will be, unless he wants to take a steep pay cut.
