Stransky looks a lot better tonight than last night. It must have been the long layoff.

2nd goal of the night for Matej. Came out of the penalty box and turned on the jets for a breakaway. Skating looked good there!

Wow, Stransky's skating actually looks decent tonight, his top speed has seemed to significantly improve since I watched him in the playoffs. His first few steps still need improvement but all-in-all i'm impressed

Ya that long layoff really affected his game. He looks a lot better tonight, total change.

Power skating can do wonders and it's one of the few things that's really fixable. You can't teach puck skills like he has at this stage of his development. Good to see the rust is being shaken off and he doesn't look as bad a skater as he used to be.

Its definitely fixable. Benn looked like he was skating in mud at times his rookie year and then in his 2nd showed another gear that allowed him to blow past people. I hope a good offseason of conditioning will help him regain that explosive step.

Skating is the one thing that can be fixed easily...

That and tying rockets to your skates.

I mean, Stransky is the kind of guy where you give him the puck in the offensive zone and let the goals happen. If you're expecting like a full length of the rink checker you're going to be disappointed.

Klingberg signs a one-year contract with Frölunda. Says he wants to develop one more year in Sweden before going to the AHL.

Says he saw the depth chart in Austin and decided that playing 20 minutes a night in Sweden was way better for his development than 15 on a bottom pairing role in the AHL. He's right and that's not a bad thing for him or the Stars.

Ah, the other face to the Jagr deal.

After MacDermid's strong debut, I wonder what Payne will bring (in a couple of years)

As a continuation from my post in the Gonchar thread. The same source I spoke with singled out the return for the Jagr deal as outstanding. Very happy with that deal in particular. Organization seems to think that Lane MacDermid can definitely bring something to the NHL roster. At least, that's the impression I was given.

Does MacDermid make Roussel expendable, you think?

Bottom 6

Mason Raymond (UFA) - Eakin - Cole
Roussel-Nystrom-MacDermid

Nystrom shouldn't be more than a 4th liner. If we don't sign Raymond, then move Roussel to 3rd line and replace his 4th line spot with Garbutt/Fiddler

I think Roussel is better at just about everything. He might not win as many fights, but he can go on the third line ahead of MacDermid 10 times out of 10 IMO.

Which makes him an injury callup rather than a guy you're gonna keep on the bench all year until someone gets hurt.

I'm not too sure about Saginaw's situation or how Payne will fit in there. He was definitely going to get a much bigger role had he stayed with Plymouth. This is a classic junior rebuilding trade though. The Whalers are already losing a ton of their top talent to the next levels so they figure they might as well gut the team and load up on picks to start the next cycle. At any rate it's not a "this player isn't working out here" trade.

I can only assume that a change of scenery would be best for Payne. When I saw him play against the knights in the playoffs he had very minimal ice time.
