Here we go again...

I think there is zero chance that Gillis moves Kassian for a smaller player, especially a d-man.

Why is MDZ available?

It is well documented that Kassian had a rough year, but the potential is obviously there and he has shown signs of being the PWF we all want.

I assume that MDZ is struggling a bit as well, I have liked him when I saw him play but you only watch so many Rangers games out here. Thing is that we desperately needs size and toughness in our top 6 and we hope Kassian can bring that. We also don't really have any spots in our top 4 opening up any time soon

The same owner who sued Aqulini for ownership of the team, claiming a deal was in place?

I think we should be happy they trade with us at all. That Burrows trade is highway robbery for us though, no chance in hell that happens.

I don't think they'd move him for Edler either. Philly is the best target for an Edler trade imo, possibly Buffalo.

Had to! MDZ is 6'0-6'1 205-210lbs. Not exactly small. He is also a physical player.

The Rangers need a shake-up and they have too many LD's. Staal, McDonagh, Moore, MDZ (not in any order). MDZ has been a top-4 d-man for a couple of years, just a numbers game and I know Jeff Gorton (AGM) and Gordie Clarke (Director of Scouting) love big guys who can skate and intimidate. They loved Kassian in his draft year but he was gone.

Gorton helped draft Lucic and Marchand and sign Chara. Clarke drafted Chara. Both drafted McIlrath @ 10. They like those types of multi-faceted, a little crazy, players.

I like MDZ a lot but unfortunately we have too many LD's as well. Edler, Hamhuis and Garrison (although he can play RD effectively with the right partner) are all LD's. We need to move on (Edler) and pick up a righty to balance the pairings a bit better imo.

Also - just to echo what other posters have said regarding Kassian, he showed some really good spurts and flashes in the playoffs, I don't think the team will trade him. All signs look to him becoming a good 20 g/30 a PWF, which is exactly what the team is hoping for.

I think Kassian is untouchable unless you're offering a similar type of player (like Lucic).
Hodgson, one of our most valuable players at the time, was only going to be moved for a short list of gritty forwards. Gillis got what he wanted, and I don't see him moving him any time soon.

Unless MDZ can beat out Hamhuis or Edler then I don't see it

A few bottom 6 guys I'd be interested in signing

- Boyd Gordon
- David Steckel
- Matt Hendricks
- Jerred Smithson

All are good at faceoffs, good defensively, and gritty.

Hamhuis-Edler
Garrison-Bieksa
Del Zotto-Tanev

Drool. He could also play with Garrison on the 2nd PP unit. I would be open to dealing Kassian for del Zotto.

Any of them would be good fourth line additions. Steckel is probably a bit under hyped compared to Gordon, which may make him come cheaper. His size and face off prowess would be a big plus.

Smithson could be a good money puck signing for the fourth line as well.

With Alberts likely walking in free agency, I'd like for us to look at Mark Fistric or Ryan O'Byrne. Two big, physical defenders with local ties who would make solid 7th D-Men.

Smithson is $*&#ing awful, guys. Better players regularly appear on waivers. Literally the only thing he does is win faceoffs. I don't even think he should be in the NHL.

Yeah, Smithson is junk. The Oilers giving up assets to acquire him had me laughing on deadline day.

I would still bring him in as a 12/13th forward as long as he was signed for cheap.
He can play all three forward positions and would give us faceoff depth.

Yes, he can play all three forward positions terribly, get horrifically outshot every time he's on the ice, offer zero offensive upside, and win an extra 1 or 2 faceoffs a game over an average 4th line center -- and then promptly lose possession because he's so bad.

What's the point of doing that? Mind you, it does sound exactly like the Canucks 4th line in each of the last 10 years, but maybe they should try something else...

That's debatable. He's equally trash at all of them.

Kesler + Burrows for Eriksson + Benn

BLOCKBUSTTTERRR!!!!

Kesler > Benn
Burrows < Eriksson

I can replace Kesler with Fat Benny as my whipping boy.

There's no way I see Dallas doing that.
We'd have to add a decent amount.

One thing to keep in mind when targeting a 4th line center for their face-off abilities in their handedness. Kesler, when healthy, gives this team a high level of face-off ability when needing a RH'ed shot. With Malhotra out the Canucks lost their LH'ed face-off ace, so I would say Gillis would be more likely to target a LH'ed center. Doesn't make a huge difference, but could be a deciding factor on who is targeted.

Or why we don't deal from our weakness in RW for an excess that we already have in LD.

Beautiful.

Now if only someone could photoshop Kesler's face onto that guy, maybe even a hockey stick in his hand, it would be perfect.
