This usually is a star or a guy that was once a star and had elevated their game before.

I don't remember Brind'amour doing all that much save cashing in on Conklin's gaffe. Hell Horcoff had more points than him that year.

The C is just a letter. And when Horcoff was given it, there wasn't a better canidate at the time. How many players are even left from when he was named Captain?

Look at that roster. That was an awful team.

I didn't mind the decision at the time, but at this point it's time to make the transition to someone else. Hall.

As for Brindamour, he was playing Selke hockey for the Canes that year. Was many times described as their best player. Led them in goals that playoff year.

Yeah but we all know who the best player for Carolina really was.

And I do agree. I think they change the captaincy this year. Hall is probably the most deserving.

That's fine, but when it came to Conn Smythe talk Brindamour was getting attention. Staal/Stillman had the points. Brindamour had the goals. Ward the goaltending.

Unbelievable dissection of CHI's tendencies and system by the DET coaching staff. This is Mac-T circa 2006 level coaching.

Hahahaha wow, awesome.

Franzen gets smoked at one end and Kane pots a breakaway at the other.

Love it.

Edit: And there's the make up call from the Refs. ******** call waiving that goal off. Sure, Shaw was in the blue paint but its hard to waive a goal for goalie interference if the guy isn't actually touching the goalie.

The refs really helped Detroit secure their win after Chicago made it 2-1.

Yep, pretty embarrassing display there.

Now would be a good time for Quenville to take a 100,000$ fine and just blast the refs.
I'd show up to the press conference with the youtube replay of the shaw no goal call on an ipad or something and just loop it for the media scrum and say 'nuff said, ______ (ref waiving his arms) is a joke' and leave

Yeah figured Babcock might have watched tape of the 06 series

Remember when it was rumored Babcock could be gone if the Wings didnt make the playoffs?

There were people on this board who actually were saying Babcock wasn't a great coach, he had Lidstrom, blah blah blah.

Guess that argument's done, eh?

Holy crap. Datsyuk's wrist shot is so lethal and quick that no one even knows that the puck goes in when he scores with it. It not only zips into the net, it comes rocketing out of it as well.

That was from the ANA series.

Today's goal was similar, the announcers actually thought it went off the post.

Tends to happen to good coaches when they have good teams. Bowman was lucky in that virtually the same Detroit roster failed year after year until he took over and won 2 Cups in a row.

Babcock is a genius. Look what he did with the Ducks in the 2003 playoffs. The Ducks have a similar make-up. Near-miraculous goaltending from Howard, and a couple of stars in Z/Dats to carry that team forward, similar to Kariya/Oates/Sykora.

A coach's impact on the game can sometimes be way overestimated. It's not like MacT was a better coach than Babcock when he "outcoached" the Wings in 2006. Most of the time, it's the performances of the players on the ice that make the coach look good or bad.

Yeah, I watched it a few times.
I noticed Howard had no clue where the puck was, and didn't move laterally until it was already pretty much in.
If he was really being impeded he wouldn't have been able to move laterally at all.
Shaw must be a mental giant to have such enormous telepathic powers to prevent Howard from moving without even having to touch him.

That no goal was clearly a make up call for the miss on Franzen which led to Kane's goal.

Sounds as if the bad calls were fairly balanced then and in the end the clubs not that far apart on the ice. For the Wings, the impressive thing is they are winning the series, for the Hawks, it means they still haven't beat a good team in the playoffs since they won the cup and questions could start to be asked about their battle level and tenacity.

On paper, and on basis of season, Hawks should be winning this easy. Hawks are in their zenith with star players at prime of career. Red Wings are in transition and with star players in their latter years.

Doesn't speak well for the Hawks that they are having this much difficulty.

I thought he high sticked Howard (mid shaft brushed his mask) so he couldn't score on the delayed penalty. Didn't the ref signal high sticking right after?

Hahaha Ray Ferraro.

"Thornton with a Datsyukian effort there behind the net"

Joe Thornton to me is better now than he was from 05-08. He's a complete 2-way player that dictates pace of play when on the ice. Unlike the guy who got shut down by Horcoff in 06.

He's basically turned himself from a Crosby/Malkin type of offense-first player to a Kopitar/Datsyuk/Zetterberg type player.

To me I think Thornton could still be a 100-pt player if he is used the same way Rom Wilson used him. So could Datsyuk. It's the Sedin model.

They're more valuable to their team the way they play now.

If that was the case Shaw would have went to the box.
His stick did brush Howard's mask, but the puck was already in the net. Moot.
