Two things stood out for me in Dater's interview on The Fan this morning concerning Patrick Roy as coach. Two legitimate questions.

1) Can the Avs offer Roy the power he seeks? He has all the power with the Quebec Remparts. Owner, GM, Coach. In 2009 the Avs offered him both the Head Coach/GM job. With Sakic's new responsibilities will Patrick be satisfied without front office power? Or is there some way to give him front office power without making everything way too messy?

2) Can the Avs offer Roy the money he wants. He is probably doing quite well financially as owner/GM/head coach of the Remparts. Word from Dater was in 2009 Roy was asking for 12M over 4 years. Avs offer was 7M over 4 years. Will the Avs give him the 3M/yr he was asking? Will Patrick reduce his demands, especially if he does not also have a GM role?

Please No Ruff.

Everything and everyone is better than the typical Avs hire (aka Chynoweth) but Ruff would not be that much better.
I never understand why this keeps getting brought up. He's only 53. The best coaches in the league are around his age or older.

Mike Babcock - 50
Dave Tippett - 51
Alain Vigneault - 52
Claude Julien - 53
John Tortorella - 54
Darryl Sutter - 54
Joel Quenneville - 54
Paul MacLean - 55
Randy Carlyle - 57
Bruce Boudreau - 58
Ken Hitchcock - 61

Which is why I don't think Roy is the guy. I have absolutely nothing to base this on, but I keep thinking he is holding out for an expansion team in Quebec. If the Nords come back, it's 100% he becomes GM/coach and gets to put his stamp on this brand new organization. At 47 he is in a position to wait a few years and then move to that position. If Quebec doesn't get a team back, then he can come back to the Avs. They have never kept a coach longer than 4 years so history indicates he won't have to wait long.

It's because of how long his coaching tenure was. He didn't do anything significant in that time either.

Dater on 104.3 right now.

He said Sakic met with Roy in Florida. Although Sakic wouldn't confirm nor deny that the meeting ever took place.

As always, a full recap would be nice, or at least a link to listen once it's posted online.

Sakic and Roy are friends though, we could never tie them meeting up to have something to do with the HC job.

Nothing new other than what I posted above about them apparently meeting. The rest was just similar to what Dater has been writing and what he said on radio this morning.

I see, I see...

So Dater is saying that Sakic met with Roy in Florida huh?

The plot thickens....

I never really understood this either. Only 11 coaches in history have more regular season wins than he does. Only 14 have more playoff wins, and his team made it to game 6 in the finals and was beat in OT by an illegal goal.

His teams never had many high end players until the last few years, and by that time he had overstayed his welcome, and that group seemed to have a lot of chemistry issues.

I'm not gonna go out and say I know he'll be a great coach for the Avs, but I don't get all the hate he gets from fans. It's all way overblown IMO.

Just going back and listening to the beginning of Dater's interview again, I believe he said, "I think they met him in Florida". So maybe not just Sakic and Roy.

they have to spend on the next coach for fans to believe it.
i don't think they'll go to 12 mil but maybe 9-10.

Roy's rumour was all over the news over here in Québec , but we didnt learn alot more, just speculation from left and right . It's basically because of the DP and the rumours over here are going crazy . All waiting for Roy to return from vacation untill then, they know nothing new. Some journalist said that Roy and Sakic would work great togetter that they are probably on the same page ( making this franchise back on track and Winning Winning Winning ), that there are a lot of mutual respect between the two , that Roy's ego wouldnt be a problem with Sakic .

As far as Roy waiting for a franchise back in Québec ? Well nothing is certain right now , we could have a franchise back in Québec next fall or within 5 years. Is Roy willing to wait 5 years ? i doubt it .

Plus , that's the second time that the Avs option knock on Roy's door and it may not be a 3rd time . So if the Sakic/ Roy rumour is true , i'm pretty sure that Roy will jump on the opportunity this time and that's pretty much what everyone think too .

Was coming to post this....mostly because I wasn't aware that Patrick Roy had a brother (though I think I remember him now from reading "Blood Feud")

An interesting development...if nothing else it gives us something to talk about tonight.
