So we use up a contact on a 25 year old who isn't good enough for ahl? By his age you know what you've got. If we still have to develop him for another 2 - 3 years its not worth it. He'd be around 28 and max out as a physical number 6 dman.

Not really. And he's 23.

Petry is 25 and we still don't know what he is.

Because of his size, do we kind of write him off? It doesn't seem like, with his success, he's getting any credit whatsoever.

(Other than the post directly above this one.)
Very much so, a guy that size with that skill and skating would be a legit top 6 prospect and a very valuable commodity.

That said I'm not ready to write him off as a future NHLer due to his success this season. I doubt that it will be with this team mind you, but if he becomes a valuable trading chip that would be great for our team. If we end up adding a big 2C then perhaps he lines up as our 2LW and Paajarvi gets dealt or drops down to the 3rd line?

Does anyone know if Rajala plays a gritty style of game, or is he pure skill? I'm just wondering if he could maybe become a player like Gallagher for us....

I saw him earlier in the year and at least at that point I'd say that he wasn't very gritty so nowhere near a Gallagher type of player.

Alright my bad on his age. But my opinion hasn't changed. If he's not close to NHL at 23 and will max out as a bottom pairing d man it's not worth using up a contract.

Kinda figures that. Too bad, that would have been ideal. Still high hopes for him though.

I haven't watched the Barons since Rajala's first games, but from what I recall he is a good, elusive skater and not at all gritty. Also looking at some boxscores lately he shoots a whole heck of a lot.

However, I agree. I doubt he'll be able to translate his game to the NHL this seamlessly. I hope he gets a few cups, as he has definitely showed he deserves it. Works hard in every league he's ever been in.
Maybe for once, one of these late round player turns into something that can add to an NHL team. We always get criticized for rushing guys, but for once, Rajala was an example of just leaving a guy in Europe, and when he was ready for North American pro leagues, we brought him over.

Oilers are the team that carried 3 goalies for over half a season. They were scared to risk guys like JFJacques to waivers. They think their tweener prospects are all valuable commodities.

If they aren't even offering Bigos a contract its a pretty safe bet that he will not amount to anything.

In terms of Rajala. They said he was too small to play a Canadian style, he figured out the WHL and played well all the way to the memorial cup tourney. They said he wasnt good enough for the Fin league and the WHL ruined him. He adjusted. Then they said he wasn't good enough or big enough for NA pro leagues. He dominated the ECHL. Still too small for AHL. He proved them wrong again.

The kid is tough, goes where we tell him and always finds success despite everyone saying he can't.

Not that it's the same but this is the same league that Cornet potted 30 in last year. I hope that he can take that next step, but it is a huge one.

Cornet had 37pts in 67gms of which 24 were goalies. He didn't pot 30 last year in that league.

Fair enough, however he had 15 goals and 18 points in his first 20 games which was rather impressive. My point is that it is not uncommon for guys with absolutely no NHL future to rip the AHL apart at times. I hope that Rajala is closer to an NHL player than Cornet is/was, but until I see him skate with NHL players I will reserve comment on his NHL potential.

Fistric already is what Teubert MAY become in 2 years. The writing is on the wall for him, IMHO.

Its news to me.

I think he had another year of AHL eligibility in Belleville. Hell, I don't know the Oilers even look his way if he was playing in the KHL.

That sucks, Zharkov could have been a real steal of a pick.

I guess if we take the Kuznetsov approach, he could play in the K for a couple of years and then come over.

Didn't Zharkov stated that he wanted to play in NHL instead of KHL. I really had high hopes for him. At 6'4 he is skilled enough to make the team eventually. Maybe he thinks that he has nothing to prove in OHL anymore. Does anybody know how long the contract is and how long can the Oilers hold his rights?

Yeah. Pretty sure he was the guy who said he was more Canadian than Russian and took a little heat for it.

The article makes it sound like it's just a one year deal over there.

The Oilers will hold his rights until June(iirc) of next year.

Well, good for him for getting a pro contract, even if it is just for one year.

I think he knows that it would be highly unlikely that he would get a shot with the Oilers this upcoming season.

I don't think that makes him some sort of flight risk or involves the "russian" factor.

Hopefully, he develops his game on the big ice.
