I wouldn't be very comfortable having him as my N.1 if I planned to win the cup. He's definitely a legit top-pairing guy, though. I'd probably put him in the defensemen top 20 overall.

He's not the kind of guy you should build a defense around if you want to have success in the playoffs. He's more of a quality complimentary piece. Hopefully for the Leafs, Rielly will turn out to be *that* guy they can build around in the future.

Guy's hockey IQ is way too low. I would not trust him as a #1 D and I would not trust him to be leading my d-men in minutes.

Celine's play tends to fall off a cliff after 25 minutes of play time, elite D can play over 30 minutes a night as a qualifier.

It depends on how many elite defenseman there are in the league.

If a top-5 defenseman is elite, then no he's not.

If a top-15 defenseman is elite, then yes he is.

lol at the he'd be a good #3-4 on my team comments.

Not many elite defenseman in this league that can carry a pairing. He's a #1B type defenseman that is being played the toughest minutes in the league (and excess minutes at that) and being treated as a franchise d-man.

He's in the same boat as guys like Kronwall, Edler, just not good enough to be a #1A. Only a handful of #1A guys in this league. Suter, Weber, OEL, Petriangelo, to name a few.

Still a great player but the hate on him here is greatly exaggerated. He's still a legit top 20 type defenseman, but he's in a lower tier than the "elite" franchise types. Take him off the leafs and the team doesn't make the playoffs.

Depends on your definition of elite.

If your definition of elite is top 5 defenseman in the league, then no he's not.

If your definition of elite is a top 20 defenseman, then yes he is.

Anyone who says he isn't top 20 is just plain ig'nant

Phaneuf would be a very good #2 if he was paired with someone like Chara. He is not an elite D-man however, he makes a lot of mistakes that seem like they would be avoided very simply but Phaneuf just keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. I really wonder about his hockey IQ at times.

He's why we need another defensive minute eater.

Should be some prospect that can do it-Percy?

A neutral fan's opinion

Phaneuf is a top 20 Dman this season but is not elite in my definition as a top10 dman. He has really improved a lot since his calgary days and I have been very impressed. People bring up that mistake against Krejci in overtime but even the best players make mistakes sometimes.

About the poll being biased, I strongly feel that the poll is biased not only due to the uneven number of negative options but the requirement to list out the number of elite defenceman a person considers elite sounds like an opportunity to ridicule a persons opinion.

This may not be the op's intention but I this is how i have interpreted the opening message and first impression.

I agree that even the best players make mistakes sometimes, they just don't make the same mistakes over and over again without correcting the problem. They adapt, learn from their mistakes, and become even better players because of it. That is not what Phaneuf does. He has the tools to get there in terms of hockey skill but he just doesn't seem to have the hockey IQ to make the changes needed to become an elite player.

Almost everyone sees that he could be an elite type player if he would correct a few flaws in his game, he just has never changed those flaws. They have been apparent since his first season in Calgary but everyone said that they were rookie mistakes, but they are the same mistakes he makes today.

With all that said, he is so good at other parts of the game that he easily is a top 25 D-man.

Elite level raw talent with peewee level hockey IQ means he's not an elite defenseman.

He would be a very good #3 on a deep team and dangerous on the PP with a proper QB running it.
