I guess I didn't realizw he was responsible for the defense but you have to wonder if he is taking some of the blame for the apparent stalled development of blum and ellis

Great hire!!!

Phil Housley brings instant credibility to the position and adds a fresh perspective to the bench. Housley will coach the defense and lead the power play. I expect he will also be very beneficial to continue bringing along some of our young defensemen, while also adding to the veteran stable of Weber, Josi, and Klein as well.

Very excited by this announcement. Still need to address some of the on-ice personnel, but can't not be excited by this announcement.

Great call BTW.

Have to believe he was basically hired before Horachek was let go.

I think someone nailed it earlier... needed to find a replacement for Peterson that was loved and respected by the players. It was a model that worked really well with Trotz/Peterson and this should too. It's particularly important with Weber locked up long term and the centerpiece of the franchise to make sure that he and the staff are on the same page.

All PH's are not created equally in this regard.

A very good choice with one hell of a track record both on the ice and behind the bench.

Horachek was fired by a phone call?

pretty weak if true.

good quote though

Quote:
“I have to look at it from my standpoint. It was a good opportunity. I got a chance to work with some good people and I enjoyed a lot working with Barry Trotz and the staff and everyone down to the training staff,” Horachek said. “When you’re working with good people it makes the situation positive and all those people downstairs (at Bridgestone Arena) are really good people. It was a great organization to work for, and I have to move on to the next phase I guess.”

Admittedly he coaches the D, but I wonder how he got on with Craig Smith these last couple of weeks?

Here is what he has to look forward to (Paul Gardner's resume since being fired):

Quote:
Gardner would be assistant coach through the 200203 season.

On December 18, 2008, he became the coach of the Hamburg Freezers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. On September 13, 2011 Gardner was named head coach of the Bloomington Blaze of the Central Hockey League. On January 18, 2013 Gardner was appointed head coach of the Braehead Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League.
I think he did some scouting between 2003 and 2008 IIRC.

Also IIRC, Gardner was so proud of being part of our organization that he buried his dad in a Pred's jersey...the year before he was fired. Ouch.

This can be a tough and mean business so we should not forget the kudos and thanks to PH for all of his service and good luck to him.

am i mistaken that Horacek has been looked at for head coaching jobs in the past couple of years and never got the hire? Makes you wonder if Poile thought Horacek was more concerned about his next job than his current one and went ahead and cut him loose.

My alma mater, Murray State, apparently did the same thing to their current president recently... after he had interviewed for multiple other jobs over the past two years they decided to set him free to pursue those other opportunities

Pretty sure he's interviewed for other posts.

SLake, you must take back your apology from earlier....lol. Well done.

One of the best American born hockey players to ever don a hockey jersey. Great hire.

Sounds like it was option B?

Seems like a great hire after spending 15 minutes catching up on him. Great success working with young players, particularly defensemen; with a full camp next season, I'd like to think he has a positive influence on Blum, Ellis, Ekholm, Bartley, and even Josi.

I think it's reasonable also..

Poile in Europe supposedly according to an article, Horachek coming from Fla from his home there to a team meeting in Nashville.
Poile needs to be the one doing the firing, not Trotz..

Ten years with an organization and fired over the phone??? Complete weaksauce. I agree completely with Jim Diamond on this one; GMDP should've met Horachek in person, looked him in the eye, told him the organization had decided to go in a different direction, shook his hand, and wished him well. Blindsided with a phone call is complete horse****.

lol, how can you argue with phoneguy on that one.....

far worse things happen all the time. I knew a guy that came back from Military leave on Veterans day to get a pink slip.

oh well agree to disagree.

Love housley!
Only thing that scares me is I hope this doesn't mean an even more defensive system implied. Housley was an amazing defenseman and trotz loves the defensive game. I want some scoring! Lol.

Where was housleys last gig??
