On Smyly, they're going to have to put him out there in high leverage situations pretty soon here. Can't have Coke, Reed, or any of these other clowns ruin every game without at least trying Smyly there. See if he can be your soft-tossing crafty lefthanded version of Zumaya.
With the pen, I think they also need to call Rondon up and just live through the growing pains with him in the sixth and seventh innings. The guy is overpowering the Triple A hitters in Toledo.

Is there a specific reason why one doesn't acquire bullpen help via trade? I mean it would be rather sad and silly at the same time to not win anything while Illitch is dropping millions on stars because the relief pitching (a position where many a cheap jewel has been found by canny teams) is abysmal.

Can't be any worse than Coke et al.

Miggy with 3 HR's tonight. Also, does Texas just have Detroit's number, or is it me being overly pessimistic?

Lately Verlander went 2.2 innings, Sanchez went 2.2 innings, and Fister went 4.2 innings tonight. Our starters need to not get shelled.

With the bullpen, Valverde has blown a save, but he's completed 4. Benoit has 6 holds and 2 saves. Smiley has pitched well. Downs has been effective. Ortega hadn't given up a run until tonight. A few guys have been getting lit up this year, but that happens with every pen. It's just that lately our starters have imploded.

The Tigers really can't seem to catch a break with them. Hopefully they turn it around against Cleveland.

I was very happy to hear that the Bad Boys will have a movie on ESPN when I read the column on SI. Bad Boys were great and did Detroit proud. Deeeeeeeetroit Basketball™

They played a brand of defense that has rarely been seen since. Today's NBA is too ticky-tack. Anything's a foul. Back then you played and played hard. And those Bad Boys didn't let nothing go. Elbows, physical, that was good basketball, I don't care what those outside Detroit say.

They were hated outside Detroit, but loved in the city. They were great and I look forward to watching

What a sicko. Best hitter in the game. Now if the whole team could just put it together. He was so close to hitting that game winning Grand Slam last week too.

Cabby is just unreal. Another 2-run shot. He's batting over .510 with RISP.

What's wrong with Prince?

Fielder's not far off his career norms. Batting average is a bit low, but his OBP is up. And he's on pace for 34 homers and 130 RBI. Good win tonight, need to bring the Indians down to earth a bit.

Wow people are hitting the ball hard off JV. It seems like he can never get that 3rd out in the inning.

Tigers claw back from a 2-6 deficit to steal one 7-6. Great night to be a sports fan.

Ummm.....anybody else see this in the Detroit News?

Dude's eye looks all blowed up. Creepy...might this have something to do with his control problems, or am I just seeing things?

Porcello is dealing tonight, and getting no help from the bats. It'd probably help if they'd be up there for more than two pitches before flying out.

Looks like Avila's time is coming to an end in Detroit. He is terrible at the plate. But his father is a part of management.

EDIT: Garcia with another homer! Opposite field too.

That's what you get when your closer throws 92MPH fastballs right down the middle

How many quality starts are we going to waste?

like where we didn't score a run for 20 innings against Pittsburgh?

edit: this isn't to say I want to see Valverde still walking to the mound for a 9th inning in September, it's just that the Tigers have wasted a bunch of starts lately because they haven't hit the ball.

As I said before, now is the time of year to find out if he's not going to be reliable and if you need to spend on a closer before July. Last night will happen...to every closer. It's how he responds is what determines his future.

He blew another save already and has done alright since...can't let that carry over into other appearances. Just kills you that you can get an effort like Scherzer's and it can go right in the crapper with a few bad pitches. He was almost out of danger...2 outs in that inning.

He's just not the smooth operator you'd want in that role. You'd want a guy with Al Al or Rondon's arm/stuff and have the steady hand/head of a Rivera but as we've seen, they don't make many like that if any at all.

Yeah that's what I was getting at. Porcello and Fister threw two gems against the Pirates and we lost both because we couldn't score one damn run.

You'd wish a guy like Al Al had the mind to be a closer. His stuff is filthy.

You know something is wrong when in the back of your mind you don't totally trust JV with a 7 run lead
