Shane Churla hired as "chief amateur scout."

@ArponBasu 1m
#Habs announce hiring of Shane Churla as "chief amateur scout." Was with Dallas Stars previously.

To be honest, I know very little about Churla.

So now, we have Timmins who is the "Director of Amateur Scouting" and Churla is the "Chief Amateur Scout."

I'm not quite sure what the distinction is between the two positions. I assume Churla will be Timmins' go to guy for scouting reports, but again I am not 100% sure.

So we hire 'tough as nails' players to run things behind the scenes, but not on the ice? C'mon MB, let's make this a good off-season.

#Habs Churla va se rapporter à Timmins, dont le titre ne change pas. Il s'agit d'un nouveau poste créé par Bergevin

So Churla will indeed report to Timmins, and it's a new position created by Bergevin

Let's all hope he has better success at assessing hockey talent than he ever had at playing the game.

I dunno, seems a bit odd. Seems like that job would be taking a bit of responsibility away from Timmins.

edit: saw your subsequent post. I wonder if he has a certain area or region he'll focus on.

All those awesome late round big PF pickups from Dallas could be from Shane's viewings?

From what Google told me in about 12 seconds:

-Started as a scout in 2000 with Phoenix, joined the Stars in 2005
-Arrested from a road rage incident in 2011
-Once took to the ice at a Stars development camp (while working as a scout) to give players fighting tips

Hopefully this doesn't threaten Timmins' job.

He also took the "mother of all elbows" from Pavel Bure, IIRC.

It shouldn't, as per what was posted above your own post.

Anyone know if he'd be allowed to work this coming draft with the habs? Was he fired from Dallas or did they just let him go as this post was a promotion?

They could be grooming him to take over eventually but ofcourse that's conjecture so all we can do is hope for the best

One has to wonder if he has a tendency to favour churlish players.

Timmins is so good that I am sure he will leave us eventually, hopefully later than sooner.

Such a ****ing injury happened because the refs let the game let out of hand. Pisses me off to see

What was his position with the stars ?

Is there a limit to the number of scout we can have?

Churla, 47, has worked with the Stars since 2005 in the role of amateur scout. He was responsible for helping identify and evaluate draft-eligible players along with contributing feedback and input to the overall draft preparation process.

As many as they're willing to pay, basically.

That's what happens when people keep talking about having more grit or a need for heavyweights...
