5) Sign Gagner to a short term 3-4 year contract at 4.5
6) Trade Hemsky by retaining some salary. He's gotta be worth something at that price?
7) Don't go spending a whole lot of $ on FA's as we have to re-sign the following players to long term: RNH,Schutlz,Yak.
flip side

1) It'll be a tossup between Nurse and Nichushkin from most fans\experts\mock drafts
2) J.Schultz was pretty sad and is far from a top pairing Dman right now. 2nd pairing RD for now should be the projection for him
3) He wont be cheap and isnt any better than Dubnyk..
4) Nothing wrong with retaining Petrell.
5) If we are keeping Gagner at 4.5M does that make RNH a trade bait or are we keeping 2 softer Cs who cant win faceoffs ... Nuge's injury might force us to resign Gagner ..
6) He might be worth more at trade deadline if he stays healthy and produces. 2 big ifs..
7)Agree

Ok fair enough but:

1) Hearing Tampa wants Nichushkin. Wouldn't be surprised at Steve Yzerman took a Russain goalie last year. Also, I don't think they'll take a D man as they take longer to develop. MacT wants results now not in a year or two. Therefore = Monahan,
2) Ok agree with Schultz but who would be their top pairing, Smid and Petry?
3) Ok somewhat agree but who's going to be their back-up. I find Dubnyk lefts in a few soft ones way to many times. Needs to work on that
4) Ok, keep Petrell.
5) No way Oilers get ride of NUGE. Are you crazy, 1st overall and shows great potential.
6) I see Hemsky being traded at the draft for a proven player + 2nd or 3rd round pick. Seems fair?
7) Another big 2C I want from this draft is Kujawinski.

After further thoughts:

Trade/Buy-out:
Eberle
Hemsky
Eager
Belanger

Trade for:
Myers
Umberger
Stafford
B. Boyle
(Halak)
(Khudobin)

Sign:
MacArthur
(Rantaa)

Hall-RNH-Yakupov
PRV-Umberger-Gagner
MacArthur-B. Boyle-Stafford
Smyth/???-Horcoff-Brown
Smyth/???

Smid-Myers
Klefbom-Petry
Fistric-J. Schultz
Potter

Dubnyk
Halak/Greiss/Rantaa/Khudobin

I don't think this lineup is impossible to achieve. Obviously Eberle and Myers are in a deal for each other. MacArthur won't be asking for too much and will provide some leadership. I think Umberger, Stafford, Halak & Boyle are at their lowest value based on their dollar value, treatment last season, and direction of their respective teams. I think guys like Marincin, Musil & Zharkov could be useful trade pieces as well.

6-8 new bodies like MacT said, don't know how lol, but I'd like it if they could make a splash for Yandle or a #1 Dman, relatively overpay for a UFA or two up front on shorter deals... maybe land Leopold who's still decent... get rid of Jones, Gagner, Hemsky etc,... perhaps will have traded Eberle if we get a big name in return... don't know who the back up to Dubnyk is but it sure wont be Khabby... maybe their first will have been dealt in a package as well for a bridge player with some size and skill...

If there's one thing I can't stand though its seeing Gagner at 2nd line C for now and the future, he needs to get dealt for something. Ya I know it leaves a hole but it will force management to do something about it sooner rather than later. They will have to draft another C, trade for one or overpay in upcoming years for one. ABG. Anyone But Gagner. And same goes for Horcoff but that's another issue altogether...

Hoo boy. I'm going to TRY and be realistic here.

-At the draft, doesn't matter who gets picked. We just shipped the 7th pick out with Ales Hemsky for Tyler Myers.*

-We also trade Gagner for Adam Henrique and a 3rd

-We re-sign Smithson and Fistric as PB depth and jettison Brown, Petrell, Hordichuk, Jones, Belanger (buy out), Eager (buy out), Peckham, Potter (bury him if necessary), and Khabibulin. Man, we had a lot of crap on the roster last year.

-Then we replace them with capable guys off the FA pile like Clowe, Cleary (an old MacT favorite), Gordon, Armstrong, Hainsey, and Greiss... I realize that this is a lot of FA signings but MacT kind of hinted at that in his session on After Hours, and we would have lots of holes to fill with all the guys we would be letting go.

Clowe-Hopkins-Eberle
Hall-Henrique-Yakupov
Paajarvi-Horcoff-Cleary
Smyth-Gordon-Armstrong
Hartikainen/Smithson

Hainsey-Myers
Smid-Schultz
Schultz-Petry

*Not sure if Buffalo goes for that deal without a D-man coming back, but they avoid the potential cap trouble of Myers' deal by cutting it back to 5.5 for just next year with Hemsky, and replace his 'potential' by adding a second top ten pick. Seems logical, I would probably add to it if necessary though.

That's a forward group i would love to have going forward.
Sign Horton, Gordon, and one of Stalberg or Torres
Do a sign and trade involving Gagner +(?) for Berglund since they are both RFA i believe
I know the hard part would be getting some of these players to want to come here, but one can dream.

If no trade for Berglund, stick with Gagner a bit longer and make sure to draft Monahan/Lindholm as a future 2C (even if it means trading up).

Not really sure what to do with the D unfortunately, but Hemsky could be part of a deal to aquire a nice D.

First of all, there is NO chance of yak, ebs, hall, nug,or schultz leaving.
Second of all, even if the oilers manage to get monahan in the draft, it is unlikely that he will be in the lineup next year.
And lastly, i can almost guarantee that a trade will be made for a high end defenceman, most likely a yandle, or shattenkirk. Worst comes to worse, we sign ference or scuderi (which isn't bad at all).

1. Horcoff is a massive cap hit and although MacT loves him, he will be bought out
2. Patrick Thoreson is a monster in the KHL and is chomping at the bit to prove himself in the NHL. He will be willing to take a pay cut to return to his old team to prove himself.
3. Hemsky will be traded as there is no longer room for him. Hemsky plus a pick or two for a high end defenceman (my guess is Shattenkirk, as the Blues do not have nearly enough cap space to sign both him and Pietrangelo).
4. MacT WILL sign a couple grinders especially if gagner is sticking around which leaves the first two lines weak. My best guesses are Clarkson and Bickell. Other options would be Torres, Stalberg, or MAYBE Horton.
5. It is highly doubtful that a starting goalie like Miller, Luongo, or Smith will be acquired. Dubnyk will remain the starting goaltender and a cheap backup will be signed.
6. Belanger is useless and will be bought out
7. One or two depth defenceman will be signed or re-signed

This is a playoff team

This would be the line up I'd expect if Tambi was still in charge. If the bold move is buying out horcules and belanger and letting pettrell whitney walk MacT wil have some splainin to do.

You really think Tambi would send both Horcoff, Smyth and Belanger packing? AND be able to add Torres, Lapierre and Streit?

Yeah it's conservative but I don't think so.

Clowe, Henrique and Hainsey have no business being anywhere near you have them slotted...double ********** yuck. Clowe at best is a second line winger, he didn't score a goal all year until he got traded to NYR. Henrique could be a good 2nd line centre one day. And Hainsey sucks!! Not to mention Buff fans were giving up on Myers because of poor play, I can't really comment because I only saw him play once this year...there could be a reason why he's potentially available.

My dream off-season would result in the following line up for next season:

FORWARDS
David Clarkson ($4.500m) / Ryan N.-Hopkins ($3.775m) / Jordan Eberle ($6.000m)
Taylor Hall ($6.000m) / Andy McDonald ($3.200m) / Nail Yakupov ($3.775m)
Teemu Hartikainen ($1.000m) / Sean Monahan ($1.600m) / Viktor Stalberg ($2.750m)
Ryan Smyth ($2.250m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m) / Ben Eager ($1.100m)
Mike Brown ($0.737m)

DEFENSEMEN
Karl Alzner ($5.500 m) / Justin Schultz ($3.775m)
Oscar Klefbom ($1.244m) / Johnny Boychuk ($3.367m)
Ladislav Smid ($3.500m) / Jeff Petry ($1.750m)
Corey Potter ($0.775 m)

GOALTENDERS
Devan Dubnyk ($3.500m)
Anton Khubodin ($1.400m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,248,000;
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,052,000

Transactions:
1) Trade Hemsky or 2nd round pick + 7th overall to Carolina for 5th overall, draft Barkov or Monahan - presumably Carolina wants to draft a d-man, if they don't want Hemmer trade him to someone for a second or a third I need to get rid of his salary for below.
2) Sign and trade Gagner at the draft to Dallas for 10th overall, draft Lazar
3) Threaten to offer sheet Alzner if Washington doesn't agree to Nick Schultz + 2014 1st + pick/prospect. They are up against the cap.
4) Sign and trade Paajarvi to the Bruins for Boychuk to help them out of cap trouble.
5) Trade a 3rd round pick/mid level prospect to Philly for Talbot to help them out of cap trouble.
6) Compliance buyout Horcoff
7) Compliance buyout Belanger
8) Sign Clarkson UFA 5 years @ $4.5m
9) Sign McDonald UFA 2 years @ $3.2m (expires when you have to re-up Yak, Lazar should be ready at this point)
10) Sign Stalberg UFA 4 years @ $2.75m
11) Sign Khubodin UFA 3 years @ $1.4 M
12) Sign Hartikainen RFA 2 years @ $1.00m

A 12 step program should be no problem for MacT

I'd also be hoping like hell that the cap goes up in this scenario.

I posted this under the proposal thread and then saw this thread - copy and pasted here as it seems appropriate that I post this here I guess.

So I worked this out on capgeek.com. By giving the players involved a contract with a cap hit the same as their current salary (given that the cap is going down it makes sense to me that is reasonable to assume we could get these players for this money on average) this is am affordable team for the oilers with room to spare.

This team is premised on buying out Horcoff, trading Gagner, Hemsky, N. Schultz and Belanger for draft picks and acquiring only free agents. Obviously this team would only happen if everyone signed here (so it very likely wouldn't) but it is conceptually interesting to illustrate what drastic change could be possible this year.

Line 1: Hall. Rnh. Ebs
Line 2: Paajarvi. Weiss. Yakupov
Line 3: Harti. Boyd Gordon. Horton
Line 4. Bickell. Maxim Lapiere. Colton Orr
Smyth
Petrell

D1: Streit. J. Schultz
D2: Regehr. Petry.
D3: Rozsival. Smid
Fistric

G: Dubnyk. Labarbera (insert inexpensive goalie here)

What does that look like to you all? Better team or just change for change sake?

Colton Orr is not an upgrade on Mike Brown.

Any lineup with Monahan or Lindholm as a 2nd or 3rd line centre is a guarantee non playoff team.
