They go hand in hand though. To excuse a guy for not getting gwg by saying, oh well he just sucks at scoring doesn't make me feel better.
That's my point, they go hand in hand - in that one predicts the other. A player that scores few goals will not have many GWG. The issue is that he's not scoring many goals. Coupling that, a team that doesn't win many games isn't going to get many GWG either. You can argue that Horcoff contributes to the team losing, but GWG isn't a very good standard for "important" goals. It wouldn't make me feel any better if every goal he had scored was the GWG if it meant no changes to our record and no improvement on his stat line.

I also disagree that GWG is a fair metric of "important" goals, and use the GWG that Horcoff got to demonstrate that. He broke his streak of no GWG games with a game where scored first in a 4-0 game. I'd argue that's less important than a goal that, say, ties the game.

Look at Horcoff's 7 goals this year:

He scored the 3rd goal in a 4-1 game. Is an insurance marker like that more or less important than his GWG?
He scored the 5th goal (5-2) in a game we won 6-5. Is that goal more or less important than his GWG?
Second goal (2-1) in a Shootout loss
Second goal (2-3) in a 3-2 loss (brought the game within 1, 7 minutes into the third).
Tying goal (3-3) in a 6-4 win.
Second goal (2-5) in a 5-3 loss.

Taylor Hall (easily our best player, in my opinion) had 4 GWG this year.
One of them was a 6-1 win.
4-1 win
4-0 win (hattrick game)
6-5 game (note, he made the game 6-3 when he scored it)

Yeah.

It wins the specious stat of the year award. Gotta be something though and Gagner knocks are getting harder to find.

I'm not convinced what its about either. Its not like primary assists have been any particular issue with Gagner. If anything some knock could be he didn't score enough. Or wasn't consistent enough. But he produced. Now people finding ways to try to knock that.

He didn't produce the right way..

Not a Gagner fan, but this is a pretty fickle argument IMO.

I mean Patrick freakin' Marleau had less primary assists/60min ES than Gagner this past season, no one's crapping on him for that reason.

Last year (11-12) he was 75th amongst forwards in primary assists/60min ES. Above-average for a 2nd line forward.

It's just an anomaly of a stat that makes the anti-Gagner crowd look ridiculous for trying to use it in an argument.

We don't need a stat like that to prove that he's not up to par. There are many other things we can harp on. Let's admit what he was good for - point production in secondary minutes competition-wise. But he was also clearly a sieve in that position as well. His GA/60minES was terrible

I wasnt sure, but close enough. Is 2 ES primary assists supposed to change anything? I was really pulling the wool over everyone's eyes there.

Barkov on the right team would put Landedkog/Colorado to shame

Top six is a meaningless term.

Honestly, to coach you have to gauge the will in the player to do what you think is necessary based on the team that you have.

Horcoff has shown this sort of aptitude, but its a continuously changing variable.

Apparently Omark wants to come back to the Oil.

Hypothetically if we ran 3 scoring lines..

Hall-RNH-Eberle
?-Gags-Yak
MPS-Lindholm-Omark
Smyth-Lander?-Brown

Lindholm and Paajarvi are both 2-way forwards and Omark is all offense.

Aside from Smyth who will realistically be on the team I can live with this.

From the looks of the UFA market, Stalberg or Bickell could slot into the LW slot. Preferably Stalberg.

I don't know where you heard that, but it would sure be nice if Omark could come over and have a Brunner-type season. Of course, I'd only be interested in bringing him back if the Oilers got a lot bigger and tougher over the offseason. He'd have to slot in with a couple of bigger guys, maybe on the third line.

I'd prefer something more like that.

I like Omark, I just don't see him as a fit on The Oilers. I think a team like Nashville, Phoenix NJ would allow him to,succeed in the NHL.

I think there were just 2 games the Oilers won without Gagner pointing in them , he was a big part of wins this year.

Wonder if Tambo and Renney being shown the door had something to do with it. I'd bring the guy back, but just don't bet the farm on him being a long term solution.

I'm fully on-board with a BOLD firing of Krueger + the sad sack assistants that Edmonton has added in the last few years as well.

Time to get in a more experienced HC and some decent assistants as well.

I'm sure most won't agree... but I think if you are ripping half the roster apart every year looking for better pieces and chemistry and players that better fit the systems the teams is trying to play, it's a good bet the people teaching the systems are to blame as well.

Gutting the coaching staff, gutting the bottom 6 and adding talent to the blueline are 3 keys to this summer imo.

I'm optimistic about MacT and his commitment to "bold moves" if the Oilers are actually looking at alternatives for the coaching staff.

I'd gladly welcome Omark back if other things fall into place. Say something like

Hall - Nuge - Eberle
Paajarvi - Gagner - Yakupov
Bickell - Antropov - Omark
Bordeleau - Gordon - Brown

Edit: yes please to Maurice. I brought him up as a possible assistant last year.

I won't be upset if Kruegar is replaced, but I think it is hard to judge a 1st year coach's system when there is no training camp and practice time was limited by a packed schedule and the new rest rules.

I don't think Krueger would be the one getting replaced
