I like the Boychuk, Peverly idea, but I'm not sure the Harski and a 2nd gets it done. I think we're doing Boston a favor by taking on Peverly's salary (after a dissapointing year) and clearing much needed cap space for them. We may have to add a prospect or something (another pick) to get it done.... Musil? Lander? Rajala? They may even hold out for PRV, but only if they add Khudobin, which would save signing Griess. But definitely Peverly on the 3rd line, who CAN play 2nd line adds some veteran presence, leadership and a player who can do better than just "not get scored against". Great start, assuming they waive their NTC.

I like that you're focusing on strength down the middle.... not top end talent, but solid veterans, not young guys. But I really don't like all the posts counting on Kelfbom to be in our top 6 for next year. I really believe Detroit has the right idea with guys learning in the minors. If Klefbom is one of our top 6 and he struggles then we really have a problem and it might be tough to find a replacement mid-season. Let's finally set one of the kids up for success. For that I'd bring in another vet D man, maybe Rosival (or similar) on a 1 or 2 year deal? That's probably the only criticism and maybe a little more beef on the wings.... but really a fairly solid squad.

I like Vermette also. I'm a big fan, but I'd love to add Klesla (no need for Rosizal then), but that might be too much. I'd move Gagner in a deal if Klesla was included and look for some size on that LW.

I'm fine with MacArthur and if that UFA pursuit fails - Stallberg, Zubrus, Bickell could be reasonable alternatives.

Yeah, I was thinking the same things regarding Gagner and Klefbom, but I was trying to make sort of a hybrid line-up between what I'd like and what MacT would like.

Sounds like he wants Gagner on the team(and maybe at wing) and he seems to be pretty high on Klefbom. Ideally I would rather move Gagner for a top4 defenseman or a top9 winger with size and have Klefbom start in the AHL unless he has an exceptional camp/preseason.

My Oilers lineup 2013/2014: Revised Version

A lot of Rangers fans would do this deal:

To Edm: Richards, Del Zotto

To NYR: 7th overall, Hemsky

Then we would either keep Gagner at 4.5-4.6 or sign Bozak who is better at faceoffs

Buyout Horcoff, Belanger, Smyth

Sign Bickell, Bozak (if Gagner is traded), Miller, Lapierre, Streit, Theodore

Klefbom can either be used as a 7th defenseman or we can just resign fistric and have Klefbom develop in the AHL

If this is the case....the deal is awful for the oilers. That is a nightmare contract. Definitely wouldn't be cool with this deal. That aside i still wouldn't do the deal as the seventh pick is likely to garner a stud center.

You basically have to use a compliance buy-out on Richards next summer because of the retirement penalty.

I'm pretty sure Katz won't approve paying Richards $30ish million dollars to play one season for the Oilers.

Not sure that I agree but even if you are right the idea is to keep Brown as depth grit and add Orr as well. Orr can add by example and in case of injury.... I would like more than one heavy available in case it is needed.

Cullen is going to be an expensive 4th line C, and I don't want Petrell back.
Bulin isn't coming back.
Belov probably would take that third pair hole and Klefbom would be 7th D

I think the minumum requirements for the offseason are something like:

Get rid of at least two of:
Horcoff
Smyth
Belanger

Add:
At least two forwards that can play well and are tough/play physical
At least one puck moving defenseman
A backup goalie who can challenge Dubnyk for #1

I would grade management on how well they do these things. If they focus on the quality of player they bring in, doing just these tasks would be a sufficient improvement.

I hate the idea of having Streit on our team. Streit is a disaster when it comes to 5on5 hockey... He is at BEST a 5th defence man powerplay specialist.
He gets the majority of his points on the power play. And is a liability in his own end.

Paying him 5 mil a year and giving him top minutes is a recipe for failure..

Agreed, BowDangles. A HUGE no to Mark Streit and a HUGE no to giving 35 year olds multi year deals.

I hate Streit but if he doesn't cost a player and can be had on a 1-2yr deal, I am fine.

Players bought out: Horcoff / Belanger
Players traded: Gagner, Hemsky and NSchultz
Keep draft pick.

Along those lines. Not sure of cap space though.

If I was wearing MacT's glasses with that slicked back silver fox hair here's what I would be trying to do. Maybe can't make it all happen but I dont think these moves are unreasonably or outlandish.

First off I would try to turn Hemsky and our 2nd from Ana into either Johansen out of columbus or Hanzal out of phx. In columbus I think Johansen has maybe fallen out of favour, they keep expecting him to turn into a 2C but I believe that he possesses excellent shutdown skills has the size and some scoring upside to be one of the best 3C's in the league with some good line mates. Hanzal is the same type of player but he is injury proned (even worse then Hemsky) a bit of a risk and who's to say either Gm makes one of those deals but I think they are pretty fair value. If it was a deal breaker we could retain some of Hemsky's contract.

Secondly, Im agressively trying to sign both Bryan Bickell and Boyd Gordon, both are solid bottom 6 guys, Bickell has potential to jump up into the top 6 occasionally but is by no means a full time top 6 player. Boyd Gordon is a heart and soul guy who always gives 110 and he is great in the dot. Both these guys are middle of the pack FA's, while Bickells play in the playoffs has shed some more light on him I think they are two guys that will fly under the radar and while everyone else is chasing the Clowe's and the clarksons and the Horton's I'm on the phone with these two on July 5th saying you are the guys we want, you aren't our runner ups because we lost out on clowe and clarkson you are the guys we want to bring in and prove it by offereing some good contracts (bickell 3x3 and Gordon 2x1.75) I think we would have a good chance of landing them both.

Next I'm looking at the back up situation and I'm definitely looking overseas. Guys like Aanti Raanta, Joacim ericsson are guys I'm looking at and on this side of the pond I think Anton Khudobin. These are all guys who can be had for cheap and could very easily push Dubnyk to be better while being solid when needed.

At the draft I'm praying Monahan is still around at 7 if he isn't I'm looking to put a package together built around the 7th overall that is gonna bring in a veteran D-man who is reliable in his own end and can log big minutes (think Regher for LA and what did he cost them a 2nd?)

If I cant get a deal done I draft either Lindholm or Darnell Nurse.

So if you made it this far my 13-14 lineup would look something along the lines of:

Hall RNH Yakupov
PRV Gagner Eberle
Bickell Johansen/Hanzal Hartikinen
Brown Gordon Petrell

Traded or FA D-man J. Schultz
Smid Petry
N. Schultz Belov
Fistric

Dubnyk
Raanta/khudobin

Also if there was anyway to make a deal for Cal Clutterbuck out of Minnesota I'd try and get that done, don't know what it would cost but Minne is gonna be a team up against the cap. If I could do a deal say something like 2014 2nd and say tony Rajala or another prospect I'd try that. Slot Clutterbuck in Hartikinens spot and send Harti back to the AHL. Leaving guys like Harti, Lander, Marincin, Klefbom in the AHL to start to strengthen our positional depth.

I don't want him on the oilers at the money he wants. He is looking at 4mil+. Paying that to a third liner isn't good cap management. There are more affordable options out there.
