Dipietro plus assets in play by NYI

Friedman on HNIC Hot Stove tonight said that the Islanders would include "assets" in a DiPietro trade.

What assets would NYI need to offer for a team to swallow Dipietro's contract.
And what team has the financial backing to take the contract.

A 1st or a guy like Nino would be my guess. $24 million is a lot of money

These assets are going to need to be 'big';otherwise,I really don't see anyone going anywhere near Dipietro's contract.

If I was a GM I would do the following. Otherwise no dice.

to Flames
- Rick DiPietro
- 1 of Nino/Strome/Reinhart
- 1st in 2013
- 1st in 2014

to the Islanders
- Joey MacDonald
- 1 of Tanguay/Cammalleri

I don't think 1 big asset will be enough.

Can the team acquiring DiPietro buy him out? Or are players who were on a team's 2012/2013 roster the only ones eligible to be ought out?

If it's the 1st case, I could do:

To NYI: 22nd overall
To CAL: Dipietro + Nelson + 15th overall + Johan Sundstrom

It's not like the Flames aren't going to be spending much for the next little while (despite what Featser blabbers). Getting a big, talented center plus an upgraded 1st rounder, along with a secondary prospect would be pretty solid.

But hey, it's not my money.

There's a Luongo to LI thread on the board. According to a Canuck poster, HNIC said the deal being discussed is Luongo for DiPietro+ a solid asset.

I'm gonna guess that the isles would line up any potential deals, look them over and take back Luongo, giving up 1 solid asset.

Depends on whether Snow takes back a crappy contract.

15th overall pick 2013
Nino
DiPietro

for

3rd round pick 2013

If a junk contract (Luongo etc) comes the other way, slightly less from Islanders.

This is going to go on for a while, the Isles stay quiet while the rumors swirl. Snow has shown to be be very patient and to look at all options. The longer he waits, the more leverage he gains anyway. We've seen it before. If anything does happen, it'll be at the Draft.

Seems to be more and more talk about this possibility. If Gillis can work out a trade that sends Roberto to the Isles and is able to get at least one solid, young asset in return, I think it's definitely something that the Canucks would do. $24M is a lot for any owner to swallow, but it's spread out over 16 years and the Aqualini's have spent similar amounts per year($1.5M) on buried contracts in the AHL, not really any different here. Seems to work for the Isles as well as they are essentially exchanging one worthless contract for a similar contract on a player that would offer a HUGE upgrade in an area that is a big weakness. The question of course is what is that worth to the Isles and Canucks? Gillis covets size and youth, so my guess is that Nino and Brock Nelson would be his targets.

Yeah. I do have faith in Snow playing teams off against each other.

If I'm the Flyers I offer Briere for DiPietro + 1st. We buy out Di, Briere stays close to his kids, and we get a 1st for eating the contract. I'd even include a swap of 2nd's too if you wanted (basically NYI move down about 20 spots and give up a 2nd to get rid of that contract, Briere is only owed a total of 5 mil for the next two years combined).

Just the opposite. If Snow is going to trade anything to dump DiPietro. I want him pitting the 4-6 teams in caphell, against each other. Briere for DiPietro and a 1st vs. what from offer from Vancouver?

Canuck fans have been pushing the idea, that the Canucks are the only thing between the isles and financial disaster, so the isles better take Vancouver's offer

What are you getting at, other teams that would take DiPietro and send a bad contract the other way?

It's the smart thing to do anyway. Everyone's eyes will be on the Isles and what they're going to do with DP. Snow really seemed to enjoy himself back in 2009 when he had the #1 pick. Now the spotlight is back on him and the organization... he's gonna stretch this baby as long as he can and stay quiet.

Still, I'd believe this whole thing more if Staple reported it. He's proven to be very credible.

What about Bryz, is he going to get bought out as well or is he likely staying?

And lol at the suggestion by others that somehow Garth Snow will have a bidding war for the opportunity to buyout DiPietro. Now that's rich.
