He's gonna stay in this area too I'm sure, tho I can see him going to a Canadian team. I don't care what happens but if Lou did give him a year or two, I'd be ok with it.

I'd give Richards 3 years, somewhere between 3-4 mil per. Or 2 years, 4 mil per. It would be a little bit of a gamble but the guy is still productive, just not worth nearly 7 million for the next 7 years.

Absolutely agreed. After a poor stretch of 14 games (I have no idea how many games the Rangers played), everyone forgot he was on a 60+ point pace during the regular season, and ended on a stretch of something like 10 points in the last 3 or 4 games of the regular season.

He had a stretch of 4 or 5 playoff games where he was generating chances but not finishing before Tortorella drastically moved him to the 4th line where he was totally ineffective. He wasn't even playing that poorly, until he was put into a poor situation.

I wonder how many of the decisions Tortorella made with Richards were actually made by him

Well guys, it's that time of year. Had to bump up this thread. Same idea applies today as it did one year ago. Personally I would go with Salvador. He is captain and I think another captain would be a good idea. Gives the team a new identity.

Thanks for the thread written by Classic Devil. I was honestly going to write a new one but rummaged through our old archives.

Sounds simple enough. I think only one will go.

I'm not so sure about that...

First chronological age is meaningless here Volchenkov's body is as old as Salvador's.

Second from 2009 through 2013 Salvador hardly missed a game. (76, 79, 82, *39) Volchenkov has never had a 80 game season his entire career. As a Devil Volchenkov has played 57, 72, *36 and 56...that is pretty indicative of his entire career. Volchenkov's style is just much more injury prone.

Third, and reason he should be gone, is the fact that Volchenkov plays the least 5v5 minutes of ANYONE on the entire team.

I would rather see Sal gone than Volch if I could only pick one. But it'll probably be the other way around, not because he's the captain but because like Jim said they clearly trust Sal more than Volch regardless, particularly even strength.

And yeah I don't think they're buying out both unless they do something wacky like signing Willie Mitchell as a FA (not like Lou hasn't ever brought back guys before) to be a 'physical' D for the next couple years until Santini is ready.

CBO Volchenkov and Regular buyout Salvador. If management decides to regular buyout Salvador the Devils will carry a 1,000,000 buy out cap hit this season and a 1.08 million(assuming my math is correct) cap hit the following year.

Volch actually had an OK year. I think he got over his ankle injury. The Devils always seemed to do much better when Sal was out.

I think we need to keep one. There aren't many solid Dman available (stay at home times) on the UFA market. We need to create space for the young guys, but still need to maintain some veteran leadership. Green and Zidlicky with a bunch of 2 year Dman doesn't instill much faith in me.

I think they should consider buying out Ryder as well, if a trade isn't an option. I thought Ryder only made 2.5 mil. 3.5 mil is high if he is what we saw this past year. I know there is a logjam at D. But the Devils do need at least one of the stay at home, physical, shot blocker type D Men. So I don't think buying out both is necessarily a good thing.

Volchenkov.

The guy has never impacted the game with his supposed physicality. He is an obviously overpaid player. And for a defensive d-man, I don't like how he plays Devils hockey. I think he gets out of position in a manner befitting a rookie. Which would be fine if he had some phenomenal talent elsewhere.

At least Sal knows how to execute what we do, even if his legs don't play ball.
