Preferred UFA's (alternate options)

Flippula 4.25 x 6 (Horton, Stalberg, Weiss, Roy, Jagr, Morrow, Iginla, Clarkson, Clowe, Prospal, Brunner)
Gordon 1.325 x 2 (Lapierre, Adams, Steckle, A.Hall)
Lovejoy 1.525 x 2 (Roszival, Drewiskie, O'Byrne, Lydman, I.White, Leopold)
Khudobin 1.5 x 2 (Greiss, Raanta, Theodore, Nabokov )
Miller 1 x 1 (Torres, Cooke, Cleary, Hendricks, Armstrong, Latendress, Mayers)

I'd try to sign Hainsey if i couldn't land a top 6 forward.

Trades

Hemsky, Belanger, 7th, 37th
for
Yandle, Gordon neg. rights
(I think PHX may gamble for scoring up front, Gormley-OEL and a deep defense make Yandle expendable)

Marincin, 2nd-14
for
Berglund
(St.Louis could replace him internally (Oshie) and is rumored to be moving salary. Marincin gives them a quality LHD prospect something STL fans claim they could use.)

Horcoff, Ana 2nd (50th-60th range iirc)
for
Matthias/Goc
(Florida doesn't mind salary to reach the floor, especially when the caphit is higher than the cost. Matthias could be expendable with Bjugstad, Shore, MacKinnon?, and a bunch of other decent but not great NHL centers. )

N.Schultz (1 million retained), 1st-14, Gernat
for
Coburn
(Philly has to cut cap and Coburn is coming off a poor season. Schultz offers a cheap replacement with a deal set to expire. At 2.5 he's both tradeable or usable for Philly with the 1st+Gernat being the real value.)

CAPGEEK.COM USER GENERATED ROSTER
My Custom Lineup

FORWARDS

Taylor Hall ($6.000m) / Ryan N.-Hopkins ($3.775m) / Jordan Eberle ($6.000m)
Valtteri Filppula ($4.250m) / Sam Gagner ($4.250m) / Nail Yakupov ($3.775m)
Shawn Matthias ($1.250m) / Patrik Berglund ($3.250m) / Magnus Paajarvi ($1.500m)
Ryan Smyth ($2.250m) / Boyd Gordon ($1.325m) / Drew Miller ($1.000m)
Teemu Hartikainen ($0.827m) / Mike Brown ($0.737m)

Lander, Rajala main call ups.

DEFENSEMEN

Braydon Coburn ($4.500m) / Jeff Petry ($1.750m)
Keith Yandle ($5.250m) / Justin Schultz ($3.775m)
Ladislav Smid ($3.500m) / Anton Belov ($1.525m)
Ben Lovejoy ($1.525m) /

Klefbom, Peckham?, Fedun, Potter main call ups

GOALTENDERS

Devan Dubnyk ($3.500m)
Anton Khudobin ($1.500m)

Raanta/Danis/Euro prospect main callup

OTHER

Buried: Ben Eager ($0.175m)
RETAINED SALARY TRANSACTIONS (1.633% of upper limit)
Nick Schultz ($1.050m—30.0%)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,238,542; BONUSES: $9,150,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $883,958

It's a 23 man roster, i'm not sure why capgeek says it's 22, but i can't change it and it shows everybody published. So i'm going with it.

The first line is obviously set and should be for a decade if all goes according to plan. The second line has Flippula who is a quality center/faceoff man if needed and really should help the young duo of Gagner-Yakupov. On the 3rd i think Berglund is the answer down the middle and should be a good compliment to Paajarvi, Matthias brings flexability, grit, and enough skill to play in the top 9 while being pushed by Hartikainen and Smyth for ice time. On the 4th i like Gordon's defense and the 4 of Smyth, Hartikainen, Brown, and Miller should all be able to hold there own and fill roles (PK, experience, energy, enforcing, ect..).

The defense is well balanced IMO with 2 or 3 two way guys in Coburn, Petry, and Belov?. 2 quality offensive players in Yandle, Schultz. 2 defensive guys with Smid being excellent and Lovejoy coming off a pretty solid year. Klefbom, Fedun provide good young callup options IMO and Peckham?, Potter give the team a couple of more veteran options.

Goaltending is in great shape with 3 young goalies all possibly capable of carrying the mail. Raanta starts in the AHL due to a two way contract and a lack of NA experience. Khudobin is a real sleeper IMO and could legitimatly dethrone Dubnyk and depending on Raanta's performace could possibly make Dubnyk a movable asset without hurting the team.

It's a fantasy but i do feel the trades are reasonable and the signings possible.

- Acquire a Yandle type Dman using Gags/Hemmer/picks as bait.
- Switch Bickell and Nichushkin when the kid is ready. He'll be a sick addition to Nuge's left side.
- I'd trade Horcules and Nick Schultz for a bag of Doritos and a Kit Kat bar.

Hall (C) - Weiss (A) - Yakupov
Bickell - Nuge (A) - Eberle (A)
Nichushkin - Handzus - Paajarvi
Brown- Gordon - Clutterbuck
Smyth, Hartikainen

Yandle - Petry
Smid (A) - J.Schultz
Klefbom - Belov
Fistric

Dubnyk
Raanta

That would be quite nice but Monahan probably would not be able to step in and would rather have Stalberg then Bickell imo defence is good though.

I don't like the D because it puts too much pressure on Belov and Klefbom. Fistric isn't good enough to play top 4 minutes if one of them fails. Scuderi probably could but 2 of Smid-Scuderi in the top 4 isn't good enough puck movement IMO. Also if Fistric is on the 3rd pair i really don't like it. Edmonton isn't going to be able to move the puck out of the zone on the boards as effectively as a team like LA so i;m not crazy about 3 defensive guys at a time being in there, i'd like a unit that can move the puck better. Don't get me wrong you need those guys for the PK and in shutdown situations but Smid is largely the answer as he's elite or close to it from a purely defensive standpoint.

Draft Nichushkin at 7.

Trade Gagner for a mid first and a prospect and draft Lazar.

Sign Bozak with the extra money. 3 years 15 mil.

Sign Joel Ward (if he's bought out) and Boyd Gordon and Scuderi.

Move Hemsky for whatever.

I dont see what is gained by dumping Gagner for that kind of return, and having his replacement be Tyler Bozak.

Gagner is a much better player, has done more in his career and is part of the core. He is also still 23 and will be cheaper to retain vs paying Bozak 5 mill a year.

But thats Gagner vs Bozak. I'm think if you trade Gagner its for a much bigger piece. I think we would have better options for investing 6 years in Gagner then to dump him for a couple prospects and replace him with Bozak.

Gagner is a much better player than Bozak? Much better? Hell no. Bozak is far better defensively and on the dot, and he's more physical and stronger. We need a 2C like him.

Yak, who will probably be our second best/best player...for a 2 way 2nd line center....and Gagner to replace him on wing....

How about just Gagner+ for a 2 way center?

Why would you think that? Both players (and their agents) likely still believe that they are top players at their position. Not only that, but they would be the top 2 free agents in a league that puts great value on top 6 centermen.

Especially in Brad Richards' case. He's a player who has twice negotiated cap-max contracts. He is not in the business of giving deals on his contracts.

Assuming we draft Nichuskin:

Trades:
Gagner for Gardiner (TOR)
Horcoff for Miller + Emmerton (DET)
Hemsky for Smith (OTT)

Signings:
Tyler Bozak (3yrs/5M)
Chad Larose (1 year/1.2M)
Colby Armstrong (2 year/1.2M)
Ian White (2 years/2.9M)
Jose Theodore/Chris Mason (2 year/1.5M)

Buyouts:
Eric Belanger
Ryan Smyth

Hall - Nuge - Yak
Nichuskin - Bozak - Eberle
Paajarvi - Smith - Armstrong
Miller - Emmerton - Larose
Brown

Smid - Petry
Gardiner - Schultz
White - N. Schultz
Belov

Dubnyk
Theodore/C. Mason

Defense by committee, strong FO presence down the middle, strong PK'ing out of the bottom-six, and a little bit of hope for secondary scoring out of the bottom-six as well. Lots of leeway capspace wise in case I short-changed anyone.

My somewhat realistic dream offseason:
-get rid of dead weight like Smyth/Belanger/Eager/Smithson etc for nothing
-resign Paajarvi 2 years 2 mil per
-trade 7th overall+Musil for 5th overall and select Barkov, if Barkov is gone/Carolina says no then trade for Couturier instead, Carolina and Philly could both use a Darnell Nurse/Rasmus Ristolainen, have Jordan Staal/Brayden Schenn as second liners, and we could use a big 2-way center
-trade Sam Gagner+Nick Schultz for Fedor Tyutin+Nick Foglino, Sam Gagner is 1 dimensional and only worth a 2nd rounder blahblahblah, but if there's one team in the NHL that could use an all offense player, it's Columbus, who have Jack Johnson and Ryan Murray to replace Tyutin as LHD, this gives us a legit top pairing dman and size up front
-trade Linus Omark to Detroit for a 4th, not like he has any value to us anymore
-trade Ales Hemsky for Zack Smith, gives Ottawa some much needed scoring and us a youngish 3rd liner at a much friendlier cap hit
-trade Tyler Pitlick for Cal Clutterbuck, gives us a player to physically abuse other teams' top players instead of the other way around
-resign Clutterbuck 3 years 2.5 mil per
-sign Ray Emery 1 year 1.5 mil per, Chicago slapped him in the face with the Raanta signing basically, so he goes to the team that finished second in the sweepstakes
-sign Eric Nystrom 3 years 1.75 mil per, gives us a solid 4th line penalty killer who isn't a liability 5 on 5 like Petrell
-sign Boyd Gordon 2 years 1.5 mil per, gives us a 4th line faceoff expert as a placeholder for Lander who actually has puck skills unlike Smithson
-sign Andrew Ference 2 years 2.5 mil per, players around 35 should never be given contracts more than 2 years as it could bite teams in the ***, that being said, Ference is a local boy and a decent puck mover to replace Whitney
-sign Paul Ranger 1 year 1.0 mil per, he can't be worse than Potter
-trade Shawn Horcoff for a bucket of dog feces, if any of our players start getting complacent, we can send a message by smearing dog feces all over some hallway and make the laziest player clean it up, even losers like Ales Hemsky would give it 110% in that scenario

Hall(6.00)-RNH(3.775)-Yakupov(3.775)
Foglino(3.08)-Couturier(1.325)/Barkov(2.00)-Eberle(6.00)
Paajarvi(2.00)-Smith(1.89)-Clutterbuck(2.50)
Nystrom(1.75)-Gordon(1.5)-Brown(0.73)
Lander(0.90)

Tyutin(4.50)-Schultz(3.775)
Smid(3.50)-Petry(1.75)
Ference(2.50)-Belov(1.525)
Ranger(1.0)

Dubnyk(3.50)
Emery(1.25)

Losing Gagner and the 7th overall is gonna suck, but that is a playoff team. Our top 6 has a lot more size and balance, and we finally have that elusive big 2-way center. Barkov is kinda my wet dream and I know it's not happening. I firmly believe that Monahan and Lindholm are both going to be better than Couturier simply because better skating translates to better offence, but they're not NHL ready and might not be there at 7, so Couturier is the safer bet. Besides, we're actually one of the better teams in the league at fixing crappy skaters, see: Gagner, Sam and Eberle, Jordan. Last season our bottom 6 was by far and away the worst in the NHL, I would argue that this edition is one of the best in the league. Brown stays because he's actually willing to fight opposing heavyweights unlike Clutterbuck. Our defence is without a doubt playoff calibre, it's no Chicago/St Louis, but more than sufficient to give us a chance game in game out. Smid and Petry proved this season they are a solid shutdown pairing, just not good enough offensively for a top pairing. Fedor Tyutin spent the past 2 seasons covering for the erratic Jack Johnson and defensive abomination Nikita Nikitin, so he'll have no trouble dealing with Justin Schultz's brainfarts. Hopefully Schultz can improve defensively under his mentorship, because he produces like a #1 dman offensively. Belov and Ranger are relative unknowns, but both have had professional success before. I fully believe Klefbom and Marincin will be NHLers, so we should give them top 4 minutes in the AHL to develop instead of sitting them in the pressbox, only calling them up as injury replacements. We need a better goaltender than Dubnyk if we want to be a contender, but I feel he's enough for playoffs. One step at a time guys. This gives us about 6 million in cap space for deadline acquisitions. Going into an offseason with RNH/Schultz/Couturier as RFAs is a scary thought, but the cap should rise enough.

Oh gosh. The Lecavalier buyout has me drooling.

Hall Hopkins Yakupov
Gagner Lecavalier Eberle
MPS Smith Peverly
Eager Gordon Brown
Smithson

Boychuck Schultz
Smid Petry
N Schultz Belov
Klefbom/Fedun/Marincin/Fistric etc

Luongo (after his inevitable buyout)
Dubnyk

Acquired: boychuck and peverly for prospects or both 2nds this year; hemsky for Smith; Lecavalier, Gordon and Lou through FA

Horcoff traded for prospect or draft pick. Draft nurse/lindholm/monahan/nichushkin

Not sure if it would work capwise but I think it's doable. Wow.

From what I have read and watched, Mac T is trying to make some trades. Elliot Friedman of CBC "Mac T has his fingers in everything." If I were to make trades it would be with teams who need to shed salary because of the cap going down. Here would be my closest to realistic best option for the oil on opening night
Forwards: 1. Hall 2. Eberle 3. Yakupov 4. RNH 5. Gagner 6. MPS 7. Brown 8. Lander 9. Smyth 10. Brian Boyle 11. Boyd Gordon 12. Clutterbuck 13. Tootoo 14. Rupp
Defense: 1. Staal 2. Schultz 3. Smid 4. Petry 5. Ference 6. Schultz 7. Belov/Klefbom
Goalies: Dubynk, Emery

Trades: Boyle and Staal for Hemsky (at half price) 7th and a Prospect/Prospects
Clutterbuck and Rupp for Pitlick, Potter and one of our 2nd round picks.
Horcoff (at half price) for Tootoo
Signings: Ference 3 year at 3-4 million
Gordon 2-3 years at 2 million
Emery 2-3 years at 1.5 million

* Didn't put lines in order because of the flexibility. Boyle/Rupp/Gordon can play wing or center.

Hemsky (20% retention) + Nick Schultz to Ottawa for Greening and Smith
Horcoff traded for some pick
Sign Ellis
Buyout Belanger and Smyth
Sign Vinny
Pitlick and 2014 2nd for Clutterbuck
Both 2nd rounders, Gernat and Hartikainen for Coburn

Hall (6m) - Lecavlier (7m) - Ebs (6m)
Greening (820k) - RNH (3.775m) - Yak (3.775m)
MPS (1.1m) - Smith (1.8m) - Clutterbuck (2.25m)
Petrell (800k) - Steckel (1m) - Smithson - (800k)

Coburn (4.5m) - Petry (1.75m)
Smid (3.5m) - JSchultz (3.775m)
Ranger (850k) - Belov (1.5m)
Potter (775k)

Dubnyk (3.5m)
Ellis (1m)

10.5 million cap space left.

Something alone these lines.
