Wake Up Call

We got spanked. We played absolutely terrible tonight. Belfour was so weak it was disgusting to watch. I hope he doesn't play for a long time.

In essence, this team needed to be brought back down to earth. I'm sure they were just like all of us fans here, thinking "CUP" already. Well now we know we have a lot of work to do. They know that too. It's an 82 games schedule, and you gotta show up every night.

Here's to pounding Toronto on Monday.

It was a good wake up call, but at least the goalie issue is probably settled for now. Auld is going to be our #1 guy from here on out, which is probably a good thing for the team and for Alex.

For whatever reason, we just cannot win in Atlanta. They've got our number in that damn Phillips arena.

The entire team just didn't click well last night for whatever reason. Especially on offense where we'd skate the puck in along the boards, get hit by the faceoff circles, battle for the puck along the boards, and then our D couldn't hold the puck in so Atlanta was able to break out. Almost every rush we had went like that. Or we dumped the puck and most of the time Atlanta beat us to it. Passes were also weak and rarely reached their target.

Martin said he hasn't made a decision as to who starts Monday. I really hope it's Auld because I saw a clear difference between the two goalies last night, and Auld was easily the better one.

If he starts on Monday, look for an 0-2 road trip.

What problems in the locker room? It isn't like Eddie can throw his weight around anymore. "Im sorry Jacque, i just put my hand on his back, and wam he was on the floor, on the plus side thats the fastest we have seen him move."

Oh damn you Mike Keenan. In a time like this, im just gonna blame you.

Atleast Alex Bald has looked very solid. Ha, it is ironic. Looks like Alex is gonna be playing alot of games ... wait lets rephrase, i HOPE he plays alot of games.

Apparently Martin hasn't decided who will play as of Saturday.

Ed Belfour alone deserves blame for every facet of the 10/7 loss to Atlanta.

It's hard enough for a team to deal with a very good opposing goaltender (Lehtonen), but when your oen goalie gives up 4 goals on 9 shots it is extremely deflating.

No, Jacques Martin deserves the blame alone for playing Belfour against a division rival instead of Alex Auld, who was coming off a win. Jacques Martin deserves the blame for not pulling him after the 2 bad goals. Jacques Martin, as now Coach/GM, deserves the blame for not establishing (especially after preseason where he had enough time to see these players) that Belfour was here to back-up Auld not share #1 duties. If he though Belfour was not going to be okay with that then he could have tried to trade him/cut him/bought him out and gone with someone else (Pelletier/Anderson) in our system, picked someone off waiver, or traded picks to get somebody. Jacques Martin deserves the blame for tweaking the roster after a win and by tweaking, I mean placing Kiwi and Eagle in there instead of Monty and Auld who were on the winning roster the night before...especially when you consider that Atlanta is overall a more physical team than Boston. If anything, Kiwi/Jackman should have played against Boston and Montador against Atlanta. Furthermore, Martin made the choice to not adapt to the game last night as quickly as he should have...if things aren't working in a game and your team is getting blown out...time to stir the pot a little or mess with the lines to find something. As much as you can blame the players for not being ready to play...the blame can also fall on the coach for not having them ready. But if any of you have ever caught any of the locker room clips before the games where Martin talks to the guys and tells them the starters...you'll hear that Martin is the same way as his coaching style...boring and uninspiring. Not a good sign, but I'll give it another 8 games before I really go off on this team.

I know that Martin has a more defensive style and Atlanta's coach has a more offensive style.. Does anyone know about the other coaches in our division? If most of them play a more offensive game than a defensive game, I'm not sure how that will pan out for us. Just a thought, don't know if it has any meaning.
